THE PUBLIC HONORS COLLEGE St. Mary s College of Maryland WHAT DO YOU DO besides STUDYING?
REA only at St. Mary s One of the newest campus additions, Goodpaster Hall, is the first major state-funded green building in Maryland; check out the floors they re recycled. Our new fountain? Uses rainwater. Hosting a Farmer s Market, growing vegetables, saving energy our students wouldn t have it any other way. Photo by Jay Fleming
THE St. Mary s is all about space. Space to think, space to listen, space to chill, space to be. Among people who let you be who you are. And the water? It s a vacation just take out a sailboat or kayak and chill out. It s your biology laboratory. It s 5 a.m. crew team practice (you ll be amazed how much you can get done before sunrise). But what makes St. Mary s special is more than the river and our 361-acre campus. It s the contrast of people who are drawn to it creative individuals who write music, design experiments, build computers and put their beliefs into action. So laugh, sing, sculpt, write, play. Be. When you live, eat and study together, you make friends for life. Yes, an honors college means group study sessions in the library are a favorite hangout (really). But more than 250 students at a time dance at The Nest, our alcohol-free nightclub. And we don t get much snow, but our dining hall feels like a ski lodge. Cherry paneling, solid wood furniture that invites everyone to linger over meals together, and food as good as you d find at a resort. First-year students can have cars for the short drive to shopping and restaurants but with campus concerts, movies, athletic events, festivals, visiting artists and writers, and speakers in the thick of world events, you won t want to leave. If you do want to take a road trip, we sponsor trips like a Broadway weekend. And D.C., Baltimore and Annapolis are less than two hours away! only at St. Mary s You re part of the St. Mary s community before you even set foot on campus. Karina Mandell gathered her classmates together at a Baltimore Orioles baseball game via Facebook before she arrived on campus as a first-year student. She became class president. A room with a view. Honors students at St. Mary s are more than smart. They re aware, dynamic, involved. Don t let our small size fool you. Joining an entire community of honors students at a public college makes you part of a surprising microcosm of diverse individuals and interests. (It also means you can talk about Nietzsche or nuclear physics over lunch.) Everyone s involved in something and some are involved in everything! You ll be invited to join a group immediately. Which will lead to joining another club, and another And forget the intense competition you might expect at an honors college (although students are certainly motivated). Collaboration is the word, with students working together on research journals, teaching each other how to windsurf or walk the slack rope, and coordinating World Carnival and the Great Bamboo Boat Race. E It s simply our vibe. Saying hello to everyone you meet and soon feeling as if you ve found long-lost friends. Photo by Matt Molek, 2010
Photo by Matt Molek, 2010 Make a difference. Lots of St. Mary s students do. They tutor all ages, preserve the environment, help train Special Olympics athletes, build houses and serve abroad. Ask about options for academic credit. St. Mary s students also enjoy the freedom to explore and express themselves. The Dance Club has hundreds of members, the Improv Club is popular, and the College Democrats, nonpartisans and Republicans are a strong presence on campus. What we don t have are cliques. (Or sororities and fraternities, xpr for that matter.) Students have created documentaries on affordable housing and on a state senate campaign (the campaign project was featured on Maryland public television). Nothing unusual at a school that offers courses such as Mathematics for Social Justice. only at St. Mary s
