Upon completion of the subject, students will be able to: (a) identify factors that contribute to health, wellness, illness, disease, and disability. (b) describe the conceptual basis of professional nursing practice. (c) explain the major forces that influence change in the health care system. (d) discuss the strengths and weaknesses of different nursing care delivery systems in use today. (e) differentiate between health education, health promotion, and health protection. Subject Synopsis/ Indicative Syllabus Health, Wellness, Illness, Disease, and Disability Definitions, dimensions, and models of health, wellness, illness, and disease; Factors affecting health; The human life course; The lived experience of health and illness. Conceptual Basis of Professional Nursing Practice Nursing s metaparadigm; Multiple roles of the professional nurse; Therapeutic communication and relationship; Nursing s pathway to professionalism; Nursing models and theories. Change in the Health Care System Challenges of health care delivery in the 21st century; Patient safety culture and clinical risks management; Evidence-based principles; 1
Complementary and alternative therapy; Nursing challenges related to health care delivery systems. Nursing Care Delivery Systems in Use Today Nursing care delivery system models; Nursing approaches to client systems; Quality improvement. Health Education, Health Promotion, and Health Protection Definitions of health education, health promotion, and health protection; Health promotion models; Teaching and learning process; Resources available for health promotion information in Hong Kong; Application of theories to health education, promotion and protection in various settings. Teaching/Learning Methodology Assessment Methods in Alignment with Intended Learning Outcomes Lectures will introduce and explain the concepts and applications of health and nursing models. Group project presentations and tutorials will reinforce students learning and evaluate their performance of promoting health on selected contemporary health issues. A variety of assessment tools will be used to develop and assess students achievement of the subject intended learning outcomes.
