Day Surgery A patient has an peratin r prcedure and ges hme anywhere frm 30 minutes t several hurs after surgery, nce discharge criteria are met. Pre perative Preparatin All day surgery patients must have a visit with their family dctr up t 90 days prir t their surgery t have a pre-perative histry and physical cmpleted. At this visit ask yur dctr which medicatins t take the mrning f surgery. Bring the cmpleted pre-perative histry and physical frm t the hspital with yu n the mrning f surgery. If yur dctr has requested tests pertaining t yur surgery, btain thse test results (e.g. bld wrk, x-rays, ECG, etc.) and bring them with yu the mrning f surgery. Discuss with yur family dctr if it is safe t be ff bld thinners five days befre surgery and when t restart after surgery. Arrange fr an interpreter t accmpany yu n the day f surgery if there is a language barrier r hard f hearing. Cnfirm with yur surgen s ffice if yu are required t stay in the city vernight. **Make arrangements fr a respnsible adult t drive yu t the hspital and hme after surgery and stay with yu until the next mrning after surgery. Pre Assessment Clinic Occasinally a Day Surgery patient may be bked fr a Pre Assessment Clinic Visit. Yu will receive the appintment date and time frm yur surgen s ffice. See the Preparing fr Surgery: Pre Assessment Clinic dcument fr mre infrmatin. The Night Befre Surgery (Fasting fr Surgery) D nt drink alchl fr 48 hurs befre yur peratin. Alchl may change hw yur bdy reacts t medicatins during the peratin. D nt eat slid fd after midnight the day befre yur surgery r yur surgery may have t be pstpned r rescheduled fr yur wn safety. D nt chew gum, eat mints, candy r thrat lzenges after midnight. Sugar may be added t tea r cffee. The Day f Surgery Take yur medicatins as instructed by yur family dctr the mrning f surgery with sips f water. Remve all jewellery and piercings and leave at hme. Remve all facial makeup and nail plish. Arrive in the Admitting Department at yur scheduled time. What T Bring With Yu Cmpleted histry and physical frm and tests results (if applicable). The surgen s ffice letter yu have received. Yur valid Saskatchewan Health Services Card and any ther relevant health services cards r infrmatin. Medicatins which yu take regularly in their riginal labelled cntainers. Bring yur CPAP (Cntinuus Psitive Airway Pressure) machine and equipment, if applicable. Reading r activities (cards, crsswrd puzzles, small games, etc.). Case fr glasses (if applicable). A family member may accmpany yu while yu wait and be with yu after surgery OR the staff can call yur ride nce yu are ready t g hme. Mre detailed instructins will be available n the day f yur surgery in the unit. If yur family member is ging t stay with yu they will need apprximately $20.00 fr all day parking r change fr meters. The adult accmpanying a child r mentally challenged adult is asked t remain with the patient during the patient s stay in the DSU. Saskatn Health Regin is nt respnsible fr the lss f mney r ther persnal pssessins. In The Day Surgery Unit Staff frm Admitting will take yu up t the Day Surgery Unit. Befre yu g t surgery, a nurse will ask yu sme questins abut yur health and check yur pulse and bld pressure. Yu will als be taught specific discharge instructins pertaining t yur type f surgery. Yu will be asked t change int a hspital gwn and husecat. All bras, panties and underwear must be remved. Yu will be able t secure all yur belngings in a lcked cupbard near yur bed/stretcher. Fr yur safety in the perating rm, staff will ensure all jewellery, including any bdy piercings, makeup and nail plish have been remved. Dentures, partial plates, cntact lenses and any ther prsthesis will als need t be remved. These will be secured in yur lcker. When the Operating Rm (OR) is ready fr yu, a prter will accmpany yu t the OR. Yu may be taken t a waiting area called a hlding area befre ging int the Operating Rm. One r tw f yur family members may be allwed t g with yu int the hlding area. Yur anaesthetist and surgen will talk t yu prir t surgery. Parents r guardians f pediatric patients will be asked t stay at the patient s bedside while the child is in surgery s they are available fr the child, if needed. During Surgery All the staff in the Operating Rm wear special clthing, caps and masks. The rm is very bright and cl. A nurse will greet yu and check yur identificatin bracelet. A heart mnitr and bld pressure cuff will be attached t help check yur vital signs during surgery. A device that lks like a clthespin (ximeter) will be attached t yur finger t measure the amunt f xygen in yur bld. Saskatn Health Regin hspitals use a patient safety tl in ur perating rms fr all surgical prcedures called the Surgical Safety Checklist. It is a duble-check t ensure a safe surgical experience. The checklist includes cmmn tasks and items that surgens and staff carry ut t ensure patient safety in the perating rms such as: Checking equipment. Cnfirming patient infrmatin. Reviewing ur plan f care fr yu. The checklist is divided int three sectins: tasks that must be cmpleted befre yur anesthesia, befre yur incisin is made, and befre yu leave the perating rm. We are sharing this infrmatin t reassure yu that this duble-checking prcess is part f yur surgical team s rutine, in an effrt t ensure yur safety. Yu t are a part f the team and we encurage yu t ask us questins at any time. The time yu spend in the perating rm is estimated. If yur surgery takes lnger, it des nt mean anything is wrng. After Surgery After surgery they will wake yu in the Operating Rm, but yu will prbably nt remember. Then yu will be mved int the Recvery Rm/Pst Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) where the nurse will cntinue t mnitr yu as yu awaken and manage yur pain. This rm may seem nisy and bright. There will be ther patients in the Recvery Rm/PACU. Recvery Rm/Pst Anesthetic Care Unit (PACU) The Recvery Rm/PACU is the area that yu will g t immediately after yur peratin as yu recver frm the anesthetic. Specialized nurses keep clse watch ver yu as yu becme mre awake fllwing yur peratin. Yu may have yur bld pressure, pulse, xygen level and bandages checked peridically. When yu are ready yu will be taken t yur rm n the nursing unit. Yur family will nt be allwed t visit yu in the Recvery Rm/PACU but may be clse by in the visiting rm if the dctr needs t see them. Once yu have been taken back t the Day Surgery Unit yur family and friends can be with yu. Back in the Day Surgery Unit When yu return t the Day Surgery Unit, a nurse will check the area where yu had surgery, as well as yur bld pressure and pulse. Yur nurse will then let yu rest until yu are ready t eat a light snack. Yur nurse will give yu medicatin rdered by yur dctr t relieve any discmfrt yu may feel. D nt wait until the pain is t uncmfrtable befre yu ask fr the medicatin. The nurse will get yu up nce yu are ready and check yur vital signs again. Yu will then be prepared fr discharge.
