13 OLUCC: YesOceana Council-appointed body responsible for making recommendations to reduce non-conforming development around NAS Oceana To date APZ / EDIP grants: 53 non-conforming commercial properties have been eliminated $2.7 million have been committed to 36 businesses to promote compatible uses VBDA has awarded $2.3 million in EDIP grants, leveraging more than $40 million in new private investment

21 TARGET BUSINESS SECTORS MEDAC helps exiting military members & families with transition to next careers by promoting local economic development, training and entrepreneurship: Virginia Beach MSA has one of largest concentrations of scientists and engineers in the nation, and is home to a large creative class. Around 103,000 people are employed in the professional, scientific & technical services. Manufacturing employs nearly 60,000 people in the VB MSA, with companies producing everything from swimming pool supplies & power tools to industrial pumps & aircraft carriers. The VB MSA has been named one of America s top 7 manufacturing boom towns. Information Services and other technology-related sectors are among the fastest growing in the MSA, especially in the areas of Modeling & Simulation, Cyber Security, and Software Development.

22 TARGET BUSINESS SECTORS The Port of Virginia is the 3 rd busiest container port on the East Coast, and the primary economic driver for the State s economy. Career options include logistics management, technology, security, warehousing & transportation, and many more. VaBeachBio identifies four specific areas of focus: Metabolic Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes, Neuroscience/Traumatic Brain Injury and Wounded Veteran related injuries. A Bio/Life Sciences business park is being developed. While this sector is going through major repositioning, significant opportunities remain, with 7 of the world s 10 largest defense contractors having a major local presence. State, federal and local agencies are aggressively assisting defense firms reposition their business plans for more sustainable long term growth. Retail is coming back, with strong growth among national retailers and local entrepreneurs. Tons of resources are being directed to assist this market.
