3 Page 3 Bugle Newsletter August 2017 Commander s Message Greetings Comrades and Auxiliary Family, Auxiliary President s Message Dear Sisters, Brothers, Comrades and Friends, Hello everyone, I hope you re all enjoying a relaxing summer and getting that opportunity to spend time with friends and family! It was such a pleasure to see so many of you out for our annual 4 th of July Picnic where we enjoyed great music, food and comradeship! The picnic was a complete success and could not have happened without all of our valuable volunteers. If you think about it, we all can consider ourselves volunteers. We all have outside lives away from the VFW and our Post that from time to time, should and do, become our priority. Sometimes life takes over and throws us a curve ball and for good reasons, we must cut back on the amount of time dedicated to volunteering our time. In every newsletter I try and mention that we are all family and highlight the need for us all to support each other and our overall mission. I d ask to extend that support and consideration to all elected and appointed officials that represent you, our Post, in carrying out the business of the VFW. If you ve held office or a position before, you know it s not an easy task. I believe folks volunteer for positions based on NOT how it may impact them personally, but how it may impact the lives of other Veterans. I know I speak for all our officers and officials when I say thank you to the membership (Comrades and Auxiliary) for your continued support. Our Post is doing well and we re regaining momentum, and recovering from our roof and construction woes of the past few months. Our Club Manager reports that Hall Rentals are up and from looking at the scheduling book, I have to agree. Donations are still coming in and Dan Bauer has done a great job of offering the option of easy, online donations. Just a couple of other items to mention: We will have open positions on both our elected and appointed responsibilities soon. Please check with me or any current officer if you are interested in filling a position. Secondly, there s nothing better than coming down on a Saturday and having a great burger and a cold drink! Unfortunately we are down to about 3 teams who are able to cook on Saturday s. If you can volunteer to cook and serve burgers and beans on Saturdays, please get your name to myself or Dan Bauer. Did I mention it s only once a month or even less if we can get several more teams / individuals? I hope everyone is surviving the hot and humid weather. What a month it has been. So far it looks like smooth sailing for the month of August. Everyone seems to be working hard at their chairmanships and as officers. Donations for the roof keeping coming in and fundraisers are at hand for the roof. The 4 th of July picnic was a big success. Thank you goes to all who attended and volunteered to put the picnic together. It s not an easy job. Stand Down was another success in July. Everything went well and again a big THANK YOU for all who donated and participated in this annual event helping our veterans get their lives together. To some of our veterans even a weekend of comfort, food and safety meant a lot to them. Also this month our Ellie Mello, (Dept. of Ca. Sr. Vice Aux. President) went to The VFW National Convention in New Orleans. She will have lots to tell us about new things coming up and changes that may have been voted on. Our next auxiliary meeting should be interesting and entertaining. I have to apologize to Beth and Rich Neitzelt for not thanking them for putting on the Auxiliary steak dinner for me in June. I had to get to my daughter s wedding and the Neitzelt stood up to the plate for me. You said I could count on you and I did. Thanks again. Auxiliary sisters and brothers we have district meeting on August 6 th at O. K. Ingram Ship in La Mesa at 9:00am, our auxiliary meeting August 10 th at 6:30 in Price Hall, and district membership meeting at Encanto Post at 6:00pm. Need A ride, please call me. No Veteran Should Go Unloved. Give a Hoot, Love, Honor, Cherish our Veterans. Be Kind to one another. Loyally yours, Lupe Duggins Aux. President lupe4vfw@aol.com

We honor millions of veterans who have served during the three decades-long conflict in the Mideast. All are rightful comrades of WW II, Korea and Vietnam veterans, as established by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, on September 29, I was elected House Committee Chairman again. It will be a pleasure to serve the club, but I think we should immediately address the continuous problem of having items missing from the property. For example, my rechargeable flashlight, the surround sound system, and the portable Wi-Fi extender. It would be nice if these items were returned without any questions asked. (By the way, I still have possession of the "charger.") Keep VFW applications handy to give out to deserving veterans. The Membership Envelopes are next to the bar. Read the Steps to Membership poster/handouts for: How do I Join? Take credit for our Post, by printing Your Name + VFW #, on the Recruiter Line, of App. Earn that special VFW Pin, by signing up 5 new members. We thank you for your honorable past service and for all those now proudly serving! Hank Schanstra - Membership Chairman Call for any questions. (916) Request Your Military Service Records Online, by Mail, or by Fax, (Includes DD 214/Separation Documents, Personnel Records, Replacement Medals, and/or Medical Records) has never been easier. This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy of the DD-214 for employment purposes. NPRC is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files. Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased former military members may now use a new online military personnel records system to request documents. Commander s Message Continued Lastly, we will hold our annual POW / MIA ceremony on Sunday, September 24 th at 11:00am. I need volunteers to play a small part in representing each branch of the military and Coast Guard. Please forward your name to me or Pat Birmingham if you re interested so we can get you in the program. Thanks! I ask all of you to keep safe, enjoy the rest of your summer and take care of each other! In continued comradeship, Brett Taylor Commander, VFW Post 2111 The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following website for veterans to sign access to their dd-214 online:

10 Page 10 Bugle Newsletter August 2017 Vietnam Veteran Elected VFW National Commander Ending sequestration will remain a top priority under new leadership Jul 26, 2017 The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States concluded its 118th National Convention today with the election of Keith Harman of Delphos, Ohio, as its new national commander. Harman served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969, including service in Vietnam as a crew chief and door gunner on Huey helicopters. During his acceptance speech, he spoke highly of the nearly 1.7 million members of VFW and it s Auxiliary, citing the members camaraderie as the driving force to the success of the organization. Every member of our organization has walked the talk, and every member of our great Auxiliary has lived the fear of having a loved one downrange. I believe in what the VFW stands for to take care of veterans, service members and their families and I am proud to be a part of it, and honored to lead it, the new national commander told the crowd. Harman has been a member of the VFW for 34 years, belonging to VFW Post 3035 in Delphos, Ohio. He has served in elected and appointed positions at Post, District and Department (state) levels, and achieved All- American status during his year as commander of the VFW Department of Ohio in Throughout his remarks, he stressed the importance of the VFW s work to those it serves, and praised today s service members resolve and dedication. Sixteen years ago, no one would have thought it possible for America to fight a nonstop, two-front war for so long without restarting the draft, but we have they have and they continue to do so magnificently, which is a testament not only to their patriotism but also to their character, he said. The national commander also discussed his recent fact-finding trip to Southeast Asia. It was his first return to Vietnam after ending his military service there 49 years prior. He noted the dedication and commitment to America s Full Accounting Mission of those associated with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, and reiterated the VFW s commitment to the program. With the demand, Sequestration must end! Keith made clear during his remarks ending sequestration will again top the VFW legislative agenda for his term as national commander. He will lead the organization under the theme Service not Self. Those three words represent the life I ve led for more than four decades, he explained. During his tenure as national commander, Harman will log thousands of miles across the U.S. and abroad to promote veterans issues and advocate for better quality of life programs for all veterans, service members and their families. Also elected were Senior Vice Commander Vincent B.J. Lawrence, of Alamogordo, N.M., and Junior Vice Commander William J. Doc Schmitz of Corning, N.Y.
