3 For The Good Of the Old North State A Statistical Study of North Carolina and Army of Northern Virginia Casualties at The Battle of Gettysburg July By Locke W. Skip Smith. Jr. What originally began as a mortality study of the soldiers from North Carolina during the battle of Gettysburg, developed into a comprehensive study of the entire Army of Northern Virginia. The reasoning for this is three-fold: a) to provide a solid more up-to-date study of North Carolina troops during this battle, b) provide a good source for the regimental numbers and losses for the entire Confederate Army and c) to allow for some comparisons for the regiments, brigades, divisions and corps that formed General Robert E. Lee's famed army. Methods and Notes: Please keep the following in mind when studying the tables. 1) For all of the North Carolina causalities shown in the tables, each of the 1 volumes of North Carolina Troops - A Roster, edited by Henry Jordan (this includes the addendums for Vol.'s I - VII) were the primary source for the statistics. Each regiment, man by man, was examined for any casualties received while at Gettysburg. Also, keep in mind that only the dates July 1-4, 13 were used in the North Carolina study, as this would have been when the armies were actually on the field. Any casualties received after July 4 during the retreat are not in the statistics, as well as any deaths from wounds received during the battle that occurred later. Thus, this is not a "campaign study" but a "battle study." 2) The four categories used in the North Carolina study are as follows: 1) killed, 2) wounded & captured, 3) wounded and 4) captured (or missing.) Please remember that these selfexplanatory situations could have only happened during the dates of July 1-4, for it to be considered a statistic. On a sad note, please be aware that many of the men that were wounded, wounded & captured or captured (missing) would eventually die either from the wounds received or of disease while in Federal prisons but, that in itself is the source for another study that I plan to start soon. 3) To be able to really complete the North Carolina study, it was realized that the numbers engaged would be needed. Ideally the June 3, 13 Muster Rolls would be the best source of information for what each regiment actually had just one day prior to the battle. In reading through Regimental Strengths and Losses at Gettysburg, Fourth Edition by John Busey and David Martin, I noticed that they had been able to examine these Muster Rolls for many of the 1 regiments and when not available for a particular regiment, they were able to compare Muster Rolls before and after the June 3, 13 Muster Roll. Thus, all figures (for all CS regiments, including those from North Carolina) for the "engaged" numbers are from Busey and Martin's work. 4) When this study was begun many of the old standards (but somewhat outdated) sources, such as Fox's Regimental Losses in the American Civil War and Livermore's Numbers and Losses in the Civil War in America: 11-1 were examined but, after reading through the procedures and methods that Busey and Martin went to ensure that the most up-to-date information available was used, it was decided to use this particular work solely. This should allow for more consistency across the board in all of the regiments listed in the tables. In the work for their book, Busey and Martin were able to consult and collaborate with known Civil War Historian, Robert K. Krick and were able to pull from his valuable work, The Gettysburg Death Roster: The Confederate Dead at Gettysburg, Third Edition, the most recent findings in Confederate casualties at Gettysburg. In summary, all information for all of casualty information for all states (other than North Carolina) comes

4 from Busey and Martin's work. Only the casualty figures for North Carolina come from my study in the 1 volume North Carolina Troop - A Roster series. One should note that the casualty figures for Busey and Martin's work have a slightly different meaning. For their work, "killed" includes either those that died in battle or died of their wounds before the end of 13. "Wounded" includes both those that were wounded and those that were wounded and captured. Busey, Martin and Krick have truly done some outstanding work and as they would be the first to admit that this is an on-going project as many of the figures are not as precise as one would wish. Given the lack of information for some of the units, this is to be expected but, all in all this study should allow for some serious study and discussion. In closing, let us remember a few things. All of the men who fought during this battle were heroes. This view though has not been the case since the close of the battle due to the fact that immediately after the battle the finger pointing began, especially between Virginia and North Carolina The cause of this rests squarely on the press from Richmond, who began insinuating that the troops from the other states did not "support" the Virginia troops, under Gen. Pickett during the climatic charge on July 3. That the newspapers began calling this part of the battle "Pickett's Charge" simply added fuel to the fire. There were regiments in the charge and Pickett commanded fifteen of them. Out of the twenty-six other regiments in the charge, four more were from Virginia (Brockenbrough's Brigade) leaving twenty-two that came from other states. To keep referring to this action as "Pickett's Charge" is not only a misnomer, but also an injustice to these other regiments. All regiments did their full duty on that field of battle and neither this article, nor the statistical study, are trying to cloud the situation but, instead try to shed some light on the actual losses suffered by Lee's Army. With that being said we all should be able to walk away with more admiration for the Table of Contents Chart 1 - NC Infantry Losses at Gettysburg Confederate Soldier. Those that have ancestors that fought for the Old North State will be extremely proud and know that the troops from North Carolina, as Governor Zebulon B. Vance coined, "stood in the front rank" of the Confederacy. For it is not "one out of every four Confederate casualties were from North Carolina" but, as this study proves it was actually 3 %!!
