In addition to the maritime training programmes offered by the IMO International Maritime Academy, the IMO International Maritime Law Institute and the World Maritime University, several other training opportunities are made available to developing countries under the auspices of IMO. Training in various maritime disciplines is offered in the form of individual fellowships, granted under existing IMO projects or annual fellowships in specific pre-advised topics offered by donor countries or organizations. Fellowships granted under existing IMO Projects 2 These fellowships are funded from the budgetary training component of IMO projects at national, regional or global level. Training can take place in any Member State with appropriate training facilities and participants range from deck and engineering officers to middle and senior management engaged in maritime administration, maritime education and maritime legislation. In 2003 a total of 50 short and medium-term fellowships were provided. 3 Since 1992, a special fellowships programme has been implemented under the Programme for the Integration of Women in the Maritime Sector (IWMS), offering short-term fellowships to women already employed at senior levels in the maritime industry. This programme is ongoing and to date 65 fellowships were awarded. For reasons of economy, this document is printed in a limited number. Delegates are kindly asked to bring their copies to meetings and not to request additional copies.

2 TC 54/10/3-2 - Donor country fellowships 4 A number of fellowships for training in specific topics are also offered annually by both developed and developing countries. For 2003, fellowships have been offered by Governments and organizations in France and Israel. Advanced Course on Port Operations and Management, Le Havre, France 5 This month-long specialized course is financed by the Government of France and aims to assist developing countries in improving port management and operational efficiency through a series of lectures, discussions and on-scene activities. It is designed for senior port managers and usually takes place in September/October with approximately 20 participants from English, French and Spanish-speaking countries. The first course was held in 1987 and to date a total of 343 from 94 countries/ territories have been awarded fellowships. Invitations to the 18 th course have already been issued and it is scheduled to take place from 6 September to 8 October In 2003 two women participants from Lithuania and Togo and one participant each from China, Cyprus, Eritrea & Grenada were awarded Le Havre fellowships under the IWMS and the Integrated Technical Co-operation Programme respectively. International Course on Senior Port Management, Israel 7 The Galillee College in Israel are offering full tuition scholarships to a three-week intensive training programme to be held at the College in The course is aimed at imparting advanced knowledge and managerial techniques for use within ports, port authorities and shipping industries. It is devoted to systematic study of some of the critical management problems faced by managers in general and by port executives in particular, and will be open to senior-level decision-makers from developing countries who hold a BA or BSc degree and are fluent in English. IMO STCW Model Course Programme 8 The status of production of the IMO STCW model courses and the progress of their translation into French and Spanish as at 1 November 2003 were given in document STW 35/3 and reported to the STW Sub-Committee. 5 - 5 - TC 54/10/3 9 Other model courses are revised following major changes to IMO instruments, subject to available expertise and funding. IMO OPRC Model Training Courses 10 A total of twenty-eight national and regional workshops/seminars on contingency planning and OPRC model training courses were held in 2003 in Azerbaijan, Benin, Egypt, Gabon, Georgia, Japan, Madagascar, Mauritius, Pakistan, Republic of Guinea, Romania, Russian Federation, Senegal, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Tanzania, training almost 400 key personnel in marine pollution prevention and control from maritime administrations and the industry worldwide. Action requested of the Committee 11 The Committee is invited to take note of the information contained in the document and to make such comments as it deems appropriate.
