1 BROADBAND January 16 Broadband INDUSTRY PROFILE for Arapahoe & Douglas Counties Colorado WIOA Central Planning Region
2 BROADBAND The broadcasting and telecommunications cluster includes companies that help deliver voice, data, and video to end users. This cluster includes landline and wireless telephone communications companies, radio and television communications services, and cable and Internet service providers. Broadband and mobile technologies have become more widely accessible business modes of communication for many nine-county Metro Denver and Northern Colorado companies. The advancement of high-speed Internet connections has helped to increase the number of employees that telework or work at home while connected by information technology. The nine-county region is one of the nation s top areas for teleworking due to the region s expansive telecommunications infrastructure, the percentage of high-tech companies, innovative ecosystem, and vibrant workforce. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Colorado ranked ninth among the 50 states for the largest percentage of individuals living in a home with a high-speed Internet subscription, five percent higher than the national average of 78 percent. The downtown Denver WiFi Zone was among the first in the nation to provide large-scale, public Internet access and several locations throughout Denver offer free WiFi, including the 16th Street Mall, Skyline Park, and Denver International Airport. The Denver Regional Council of Government s Telework Colorado program offers free telework consulting services for employers in the region including information, materials, expert advice, and customized programs. 6 BROADBAND Hidden Job Market This chart shows the relationship between the number of job listings versus the number of hires for each of the top occupations in the sector. If there are more listings than hires, it means that the job requires specific skills and credentials, and so most openings for that occupation are listed. An example of an occupation requiring skills, credentials and experience would be the intensive care registered nurse. If there are more hires than listings, it means that most people in those occupations are finding jobs through networking rather than looking at job listings. These are occupations where people with effective personal networking skills have the edge. Occupations with medium strength of hidden job market require both the necessary skills and credentials, and effective personal networking on the part of the job seeker. Based on Age Distribution, Arapahoe/Douglas Works! has developed a way to measure the age gap in an industry by comparing the number of workers over age 45 to the number under age 34. Age gap is shown both as a percentage and a count % % % % % % % Listing This graph shows the week over week volume of listings in Metro Denver
