5 Complete the Free Application For Federal Student Aid online Unless student qualifies as an independent (i.e. 24 yoa, married, emancipated), they must provide parental information Parent information must be from biological/adoptive parents Submit application (available Oct 1) no later than the school s Financial Aid priority deadline Financial Aid Process
6 Once the FAFSA is submitted, you will received a Student Aid Report (SAR) The SAR includes all information submitted in FAFSA as well as the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) The SAR is sent to schools indicated on the FAFSA and they make a determination of the financial aid award based on this information Check your SAR for accuracy and make corrections as necessary online Submit any additional documentation requested by schools Monitor and/or student account online for any financial aid communication sent from your school Once you receive your Financial Aid Award Letter (either electronically or by mail), review it and accept/decline awards you wish to receive Financial Aid Process

8 Scholarships provided by the schools usually merit, talent or athletic Some schools use college application for scholarship consideration if submitted by priority deadline Some colleges require separate application(i.e. WSU) Check college website to verify admissions or financial aid page Scholarships - Institutional
9 Scholarships provided by private donors throughout the state and across the country many available for all grade levels Many state scholarships offered for students from WA state or attending school in WA state (washboard.org) Thousands of scholarships available nationally with a variety of eligibility factors - more competitive with bigger awards Use free database search programs to locate state/national scholarships (i.e. Cappex, CollegeXpress, Scholarships.com) Small sampling will be featured on OHHS website Most state/national scholarship applications will be online Scholarships - State/National
10 Scholarships provided by local donors Some are local region, some are for OHHS students only less competitive than state/national Almost all are Seniors only - couple of exceptions Couple available in fall, majority are not available until after December with deadlines in February or March, few available with later deadlines Listed on OHHS website as they arrive with criteria, deadline and application Applications are returned either to the Counseling Center or directly to the donor as specified in the listing Scholarships Local
