3 GUIDELINES 1. All applications should be typed or written in black ink. Please do not use notebook paper (typing paper only). Application can be used for BCSF Sponsored Scholarships and Scholarships chosen by your High School Scholarship Committee, unless otherwise noted. 2. Print on front only. Please do not print on back. 3. Please do not staple. Paperclip the pages together. 4. Transcripts must be detached and reproducible. School profiles are not needed. 5. Only complete packets will be accepted. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please edit/proofread for simple grammatical errors. In most cases, only two recommendation letters are needed.) An essay of 500 words or less that describes your career goals, future plans, etc. If you are applying for a scholarship that specifies a career (i.e. education or nursing), explain why education or nursing is your career goal and discuss any event that has influenced your choice. Also, you may want to talk about a specific person who has been instrumental in your decision. Please print your essay on the front only. Essay required for ALL scholarships. See scholarship description for essay topic. If essay not noted on scholarship description, use topic stated in this paragraph. Scholarship Award Scholarship checks will be written and mailed to the college/university in late June/early July. The Buncombe County Schools Foundation reserves the right to revoke the scholarship if the guidelines are not met or majority of costs are covered through other means. The recipient will be required to sign a Scholarship Agreement concerning financial assistance and other scholarships. We may request a copy of your Financial Aid Package from the college/university you are attending. IMPORTANT NOTE: It is suggested, but not required, that you complete the BCSF Scholarship Application Financial Aid Information (in Scholarship Application). To be considered for any scholarship a copy of your FAFSA report including the EFC (Expected Family Contribution) must be included. 8 The Wells Fargo Scholarship Maximum $1000 Each year, Wells Fargo gives one scholarship to a senior in each of Buncombe County s high schools. The Buncombe County Schools Foundation Scholarship Committee makes all decisions for the Wells Fargo scholarships. This committee is composed of representatives from the Buncombe County Schools Foundation Board of Directors; it may include members of the community. The Director of the Foundation shall serve as an ex-officio member. The student scholarship program guidelines are as follows: Eligibility: Deserving high school seniors are eligible for scholarships. The program shall be administered without reference to race, creed, gender, ethnic group or national origin of the candidates. A 3.0 average is recommended. However, modifications can be made upon the recommendation of the school based scholarship committee. Applications: Beginning February 15th, potential scholarship candidates shall have the opportunity to make application for the Wells Fargo Scholarship to the Buncombe County Schools Foundation Scholarship Committee. Final Selection Process: Based upon the criteria below, the Foundation scholarship committee may choose to interview each applicant. The scholarship recipient will receive the scholarship award at the school s awards banquet or assembly from a representative of the Buncombe County Schools Foundation. Selection Criteria: Candidates will be selected upon the basis of the following factors: (a) (b) (c) Proof of overall grade point average Participation in school and community activities Two letters of recommendation Award: The scholarship will be a one-time grant that will vary depending on availability of funding. The grant can be used at any educational institution, including technical schools and non-degree programs. The Director of the Buncombe County Schools Foundation shall notify each school prior to February 15, 2017 of the amount of the scholarship award for the school year. For 2017, the maximum award will be $1, Applications must be submitted to the Buncombe County Schools Foundation Scholarship Committee by Thursday, March 20, The Principal or his designee shall assure that each senior has access to the Foundation guidelines and application form well in advance of the March 30, 2017 deadline. This scholarship will not affect the student s ability to receive any other scholarship offered by the Buncombe County Schools Foundation.
9 Paddison Family Scholarship $6,000 - ($1,500 X 4 years for High School Graduate) $3,000 - ($1,500 X 2 years Early College Graduate) Each year, the Buncombe County Schools Foundation gives The Paddison Family Scholarship to deserving seniors within the Buncombe County School System. All scholarship applications will be submitted to the Buncombe County Schools Foundation for review. The scholarship committee shall be composed of members of the Buncombe County Schools Foundation Scholarship Committee, the Paddison Family Scholarship Trustee, and may include members of the school and business community. The Director of the Foundation shall serve as an ex-officio member of the scholarship selection committee. The Paddison Family Scholarship guidelines are as follows: Eligibility: To be eligible, a candidate must be a resident of Buncombe County and a graduating senior enrolled in a school in the Buncombe County School System. The program shall be administered without reference to race, creed, gender, ethnic group, or national origin of the candidates. Applications: All applicants must apply by submitting a completed scholarship packet to the Buncombe County Schools Foundation. Final Selection Process: Scholarships shall be awarded to students of good character in need of financial help to defray the expenses of a college education. The student shall have demonstrated a high degree of scholastic aptitude (as evidenced by his or her grade point average) and qualities of leadership. The scholarship recipient shall receive the scholarship award at the school s awards banquet or assembly from a member of the Buncombe County Schools Foundation Board of Directors. Selection Criteria: Candidates shall be selected upon the basis of the following factors: 1. Academic Achievement 2. History of rendering community service at the city, county, state or national level 3. Participation in school activities 4. Two letters of recommendation from present or former teachers Award: Annual scholarships shall be substantially equal in amount to each student with an initial minimum amount of $1, The amount and number of scholarships may be changed upward or downward in light of funds available and prevailing costs of a college education, as determined from time-to-time by the Trustees. 3.0 GPA recommended to maintain all four years of scholarship Should an applicant receive a full scholarship or acceptance to a military academy you are not eligible to receive this scholarship. Duration: Scholarships shall be awarded on an annual basis for a total of four academic years to recipients satisfying the Foundation committee that he or she is continuing to meet the requirements for selection set forth above. All scholarship applications must be submitted to the Buncombe County Schools Foundation Scholarship Committee no later than Thursday, March 30, Finalists may be given a personal interview. The principal or his designee shall assure that each senior has access to the Paddison Family Scholarship Guidelines and application form well in advance of the March 30, 2017 deadline.
10 Buncombe County Schools Foundation TEACHER Scholarship $1,000 The Buncombe County Schools Foundation TEACHER Scholarship is available to a graduating senior in Buncombe County. The scholarship is for $1, and will be issued to a student who wishes to become an educator. The Buncombe County Schools Foundation TEACHER Scholarship guidelines are as follows: Eligibility: Deserving high school seniors are eligible for scholarships. The program will be administered without reference to race, creed, gender, ethnic group, or national origin of the candidates. A 3.0 average is recommended. However, modifications can be made upon the recommendation of the school based scholarship committee. Applications: All applicants must apply by submitting a completed scholarship packet to the Buncombe County Schools Foundation. Final Selection Process: A personal interview with the committee may be required. The scholarship recipient will receive the award at the academic awards banquet or assembly. A member of the Buncombe County Schools Foundation Board of Directors will make the presentation. Selection Criteria: Candidates will be selected upon the basis of the following factors: 1. A typed brief essay (500 words or less) describing why you wish to become a teacher. The Selection Committee will use your statement as one of the criteria in selecting the recipient of this Scholarship. Award: The scholarship will be a one-time grant that will vary depending on availability of funding. The grant can be used at any educational institution. 11 John W. Abbott Scholarship $2,500 (4-year College/University) John W. Abbott Construction Company is awarding one scholarship to a senior from a Buncombe County High School. The scholarship offered is for $2,500. Applicant must be accepted and attend an accredited four (4) year college or university pursuing a Construction Management or equivalent degree. The student scholarship program guidelines are as follows: Eligibility: Deserving high school seniors are eligible for this scholarship. The program shall be administered without reference to race, creed, gender, ethnic group or national origin of the candidates. Applications: Beginning February, 2017, potential scholarship candidates shall have the opportunity to make application for the John W. Abbott Scholarship to the BCS Foundation Scholarship Committee. Final Selection Process: Based upon the criteria below, the scholarship committee may choose to interview each applicant. 12 John W. Abbott Scholarship $750 AB-Tech John W. Abbott Construction Company is awarding a scholarship to two graduating seniors from a Buncombe County High School. The scholarship offered is for $750 each. The scholarships will be issued to a student who will attend AB Technical College pursuing a two-year degree in Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technologies, Mechanical Engineering Technologies, Carpentry, Construction Management Technologies, or Electrical Technologies. Should only one student apply, this can be a single two-year scholarship of $750/year. The student scholarship program guidelines are as follows: Eligibility: Deserving high school seniors are eligible for this scholarship. The program shall be administered without reference to race, creed, gender, ethnic group or national origin of the candidates. Applications: Beginning February, 2017, potential scholarship candidates shall have the opportunity to make application for the John W. Abbott Scholarship to the BCS Foundation Scholarship Committee. 13 The Buncombe County Chapter School Nutrition Association Healthy Lifestyles Scholarship $500 The Buncombe County Chapter School Nutrition Association is awarding a Healthy Lifestyles Scholarship to a School Nutrition Employee or a child (who is a graduating senior in Buncombe County Schools) of a School Nutrition employee. The scholarship offered is $500. The scholarship will be issued to the educational institution of the student s choice. The student must attend an accredited vocational, technical or university in the United States, pursing a degree that would enhance the health and wellness of children. The student scholarship program guidelines are as follows: Eligibility: Applicant must be a School Nutrition employee, or a child (a graduating senior in Buncombe County Schools) of a School Nutrition employee with a major interest in the area of nutrition, or a related field that would enhance the health and wellness of children are eligible for this scholarship. The program shall be administered without reference to race, creed, gender, ethnic group or national origin of the candidates. A 3.0 average is recommended. However, modifications can be made upon the recommendation of the scholarship committee. Applications: Once posted on Buncombe County Schools Foundation web site, potential scholarship candidates shall have the opportunity to make application for the Healthy Lifestyles Scholarship to the Buncombe County Schools Foundation. 17 Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company Scholarship Minimum of $500 per High School The Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company Scholarship is available to one graduating senior in each of Buncombe County s high schools. Each scholarship offered is for a minimum of $ (five hundred dollars) and will be issued to the educational institution of the student s choice. 18 Cole Scholarship $1,000 The Cole Scholarship will be awarded to one graduating senior from Clyde A. Erwin. The scholarship offered is for $1,000 and will be issued to the educational institution of the student s choice. The student scholarship program guidelines are as follows: Eligibility: Deserving seniors from Clyde A. Erwin High School are eligible for this scholarship. The program shall be administered without reference to race, creed, gender, ethnic group or national origin of the candidates. Applications: Potential scholarship candidates shall have the opportunity to make application for the Cole Scholarship to the Cole Scholarship Committee. Final Selection Process: Based upon the criteria below, the Cole Scholarship Committee may choose to interview each applicant. The scholarship recipient will receive the scholarship award at the school s awards banquet or assembly from a representative of Cole Scholarship Committee. Selection Criteria: Candidates will be selected upon the basis of the following factors: 1. Needs Based: a) You must submit a copy of your FAFSA report and the EFC (Expected Family Contribution) must be included. Please mark through all Social Security numbers. Participation in school and community activities. 4. Two letters of recommendation- One must be from the applicant s church or youth pastor. 19 CW3 Mitch Carver Memorial Scholarship $1,000 The CW3 Mitch Carver Memorial Scholarship is available to one graduating senior at Erwin High School. The scholarship is for $1, (one thousand dollars) and will be issued to a student who has displayed a sense of patriotism. Priority will be given to an ROTC cadet, but any student who has proved to be a patriotic individual is eligible. The CW3 Mitch Carver Memorial Scholarship guidelines are as follows: Eligibility: Deserving high school seniors at Erwin High School are eligible for the scholarship. The program shall be administered without reference to race, creed, gender, ethnic group, or national origin of the candidates. Applications: Students will submit applications to the Clyde A. The program shall be administered without reference to race, creed, gender, ethnic group. A 3.0 average is recommended. However, modifications can be made upon the recommendation of the school based scholarship committee. Final Selection Process: Based upon the criteria below, the Erwin High School scholarship committee will determine the recipient of this scholarship. The scholarship recipient will receive the scholarship award at the school s awards banquet or assembly. 23 Dr. Patti Brown Scholarship For an Aspiring Teacher $500 The Buncombe County Schools Foundation is awarding one scholarship to a senior from Erwin High School in memory of Dr. Patti Brown, a native and resident most of her life of Buncombe County. Dr. Brown was a 5th Grade Math & Science Teacher at Eblen Intermediate and formerly a 4th Grade Teacher at Leicester Elementary for 19 years. The scholarship offered is for $500 and will be issued to the educational institution of the student s choice for a student obtaining a degree in education. The student scholarship program guidelines are as follows: Eligibility: Deserving high school seniors are eligible for this scholarship. The program shall be administered without reference to race, creed, gender, ethnic group or national origin of the candidates. A 3.0 average is recommended. 25 The Joshua Webb Cook Memorial Scholarship $500 The Joshua Webb Cook Memorial Scholarship is available to a graduating senior from Clyde A. Erwin High School. Joshua graduated from Clyde A. Erwin High School in Joshua s artistic talent, though substantial, was surpassed by his kind-heartedness and humility. To truly honor the memory of Joshua, the recipient should demonstrate aptitude and/or skills in the area of visual arts; preference will be given to students who plan to pursue the visual arts as at least a secondary course of study. The student s overall character, as referenced in letters of recommendation, will also be considered. The scholarship is for $ (Five Hundred Dollars).
