HOW TO APPLY Rotary Peace Fellows are selected through a competitive worldwide process. Review the entire application on-line to en- sure all steps are understood: Contact a local Rotary club to request a club endorsement. Club endorsement is not required for candidates who already have support at the district level. Through the endorsing Rotary club, or a Ro- tary district contact, find out the deadline to be interviewed and endorsed by the Rotary district. District interviews are required for all candidates. Deadlines for submitting applications to local districts vary, usually between March and June. The deadline for submitting endorsed applications to Rotary International is 1 July, each year. 3 NewGen Peacebuilders Begins on the Middle Peninsula NewGen Peacebuilders, a youth peace education program, began with high school students from Gloucester, Mathews, Middlesex and West Point on Friday, January 19, The program is sponsored by the Rotary Clubs in each of their areas. The Immersion Workshops are being held at Rappahannock Community College in Glenns, VA. The program helps youth understand frameworks related to peace, develop project planning and management skills, and embrace peacebuilding as a personal responsibility. NewGen Peacebuilders presents a wide range of research-based content on conflict and peace and engages participants to take compassionate action. 4 Reflections of a Scholar Each of our District Rotary Scholars were kind enough to share their thoughts with us on the beginning of their academic year. We will explore their reflections in a series of articles in the next few months. In a virtual interview, the scholars were asked to supply us with their thoughts on three areas: Their arrival and any challenges they may have faced. Any noteworthy events to date...(i.e., registration, interactions with locals, host club Rotarian contact, etc.). Any lessons learned to date and anything Rotary District 7610 could do to make their transition easier. Ashley Ferguson is a Rotary Global Grant Scholar studying this year at the University of Cambridge. She is studying Cancer Biology within the Disease Prevention and Treatment Area of Focus. Ashley s arrival was uneventful and thankfully her room was ready for her when she arrived there at midnight! She has enjoyed many Scholarships Assistant Chair, Engie Mokhtar wonderful events both with her school and with the host Ely Rotary Club. She even participated in a race with the Ely Club. The other Global Scholars studying at the University of Cambridge, the University of East Anglica, and Anglia Ruskin University and I were welcomed by Rotary District 1080 at the October 12 Rotary Global Grant Scholars Welcome Evening. Each of us gave a brief talk about what led us to pursue our projects at Cambridge. Lab work has truly been challenging and stimulating. Right now I am working on imaging mitochondrial morphology in cancer cell lines as a first step in trying to understand how mitochondrial behavior changes in cancer. ~Ashley In addition to her scholastic endeavors, Ashley has joined a running club and already participated in a local race. Her desire to engage and connect with the community is inspiring. Ashley even invited the other Rotary Scholars over to her home for tea! Ashley Ferguson Global Grant Scholar Page 4 January 2018 Lessons Learned: All of the scholars cited challenges transferring the scholarship money internationally. They found the exorbitant exchange rates and additional fees excessive. It would be helpful to support future scholars with some banking expertise from our District. Checking in with our Scholars is a joyful way to stay connected and learn from their experiences to best enhance our Scholarship Program. Hopefully this series of articles will provide some useful and inspiring information.
Happy New Year Greetings for 2018 Wow, it's hard to believe that we are starting a new calendar year and are now at the half way point of this Rotary year. Time flies so fast. This is a good time to go to "Rotary Club Central" on-line and take a look at where you and your club are in terms of achieving your The Rotary Foundation (TRF) goals. I thought that you might be interested in a quick overview of how the District is doing. Overall, for the Annual Fund-Share, the District is doing pretty Peter Anderson well. Out of 56 clubs, we have only six clubs that have not made any donations to the Annual Fund Share. If your club is one of those, encourage your Annual Fund Chair treasurer to submit those funds to The Rotary Foundation (TRF). Currently, 28 clubs have not reached the 50% mark in their designated club giving goals. You can see where your club stands in the chart at the end of this Newsletter. Herewith is, also, an update on PolioPlus giving. The District has 32 clubs that have not made any contributions to PolioPlus so far this Rotary Year (RY), and only 19 clubs have reached at least 50% of their club's PolioPlus giving goal. Again, please encourage your club treasurer to submit any funds collected to TRF. This is important for PolioPlus. Those funds are not invested for three years, but will be used immediately as needed. If your club is holding onto them TRF cannot use them when needed. How is your club's fundraising strategy going? Now is a good time to review it, and if needed make adjustments. While we still have six months remaining in this RY, they will go by fast. If you need help, ask your Club Foundation chairs to contact your Area Foundation Advisors for help with ideas on how to achieve your club's goals. As always, if you have not already done so, I encourage you to make a recurring contribution to TRF through Rotary Direct. This can be done for as little as $10 per month. This will have the added effect of making you a Sustaining Member (SM) in future Rotary years. (Truth in lending here. Starting now will not meet the SM requirement of $100 for RY unless you make an additional donation of $40 to get to the required $100 mark. However, you will be covered for all subsequent Rotary years). For those of you who can afford it, have you considered becoming a Paul Harris Society (PHS) member? That is a pledge to donate $1,000 annually, for as long as you are able. The neat thing about this is that if you sign up to make a recurring $84 a-month-donation, through Rotary Direct, and complete the PHS form you can become a PHS member and receive the PHS wings immediately even if you are not currently a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF). (To become a PHF requires either a donation of $1,000 cash, having someone donate 1,000 PHF points to TRF in your name, or a combination of the two). January 2018 Page 5
Major Donor Challenge! Rotarians believe in our motto of doing good in the world and many also help to fund those good works by contributing to our Rotary Foundation. More contributions to our Foundation can support many more humanitarian projects. Our District is a very generous group of Rotarians perhaps amongst the most generous in the world. But, I believe that we have the capacity to increase our giving for such a great Foundation! Five years ago, through a friendly competition, two Loudoun clubs raised a total of 29 new Paul Harris Society members! As a result, both clubs annual giving significantly increased and continues adding more funds to our Foundation to this day. Why not increase our District s overall Foundation contributions, this year, through a similar but larger competition? Tom Bowman The Leesburg-Daybreak Club is challenging all District 7610 clubs to Area Foundation Advisor increase giving through a new challenge for this Rotary year. The Major Donor Challenge encourages our generous District Rotarians to take the next step for advancing to the next Major Donor level. Furthermore, Area Twelve (12) is issuing the same challenge to each of the Areas to increase their number of Major Donors. By December of this Rotary year, the District has been successful in adding nineteen (19) new Major Donors and one new Arch Klumph Society member. A great start! Let s grow that number and really move the needle to increase our Foundation contributions! CLUB NAMES AND NUMBER OF NEW Major Donors (or increased levels) Alexandria 2 Bailey s Crossroads 1 Blue Ridge Mountains 1 Centreville & Chantilly 1 Crystal City-Pentagon 2 Dunn Loring- Merrifield 1. In appreciation for this investment in the future of humanity, the Trustees express their gratitude by presenting a crystal and diamond pins to Major Donors. The crystal is engraved with donor names and depicts doves bearing olive branches universal symbols of peace. Page 6 January 2018
Recognition and Celebration of PHS Members The Gainesville-Haymarket Club held a talk on the benefits of becoming a PHS member and a ceremony for PHS member and PE Chris Albright. 8 District 7610 Continues to Show Fantastic Support for the Paul Harris Society District 7610 continues to show fantastic support for the Paul Harris Society. Since July 2017, we have welcomed 11 new members into the Society. In terms of members, we are number 2 in our Zone and number 9 in the world! We currently have 256 members, with four additional members soon to be inducted. In late December, we recognized Donald Duckworth and Linda Knecht, both of the Stafford Club, as new Society members. Stafford has the honor of being #1 in the District in terms of the percentage (39%) of its members who are in the Michael Arietti Paul Harris Society. District PHS Chair Why have so many District Rotarians decided to join the Paul Harris Society? It is because they recognize the impact their $1,000-a-year contribution to The Rotary Foundation (TRF) has in improving the lives of people around the world. All of us want to make a difference through our charitable giving. And, when we contribute via the Paul Harris Society, we are assured that our donation will be used wisely and efficiently. In fact, TRF has received the highest possible ranking by Charity Navigator for its financial stewardship, accountability and transparency. I know that the idea of making an annual $1,000 contribution can seem daunting. But, the easiest and least painful way to do so is via an automatic credit card payment via Rotary Direct. Once you sign up to Rotary Direct you can ask that $250 per quarter or $85 per month be automatically contributed no need to write a check. The form to sign up for the Paul Harris Society and to enroll in Rotary Direct is at the back of this Newsletter. Your Club Foundation Chair can assist you. Why wait any longer? You are the Tops!!! You are a Paul Harris Society Member! The Number of Members Continues to Rise Currently 256!!! The Paul Harris Society The Paul Harris Society recognizes Rotary members and friends of The Rotary Foundation who elect to contribute $1,000 or more each year to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus Fund, or approved Global Grants. The purpose of the Paul Harris Society is to honor and thank individuals for their generous, ongoing support of The Rotary Foundation. Page 8 January 2018
Meet Jim Church, The District Rotary Foundation s Global Grants Assistant Chair Jim Church retired from the US Army in 2002 with the rank of Colonel-after serving for 26 years as a field artillery officer in: the United States, Europe, and Asia. He served two tours of duty on the Army Staff, in Washington, D.C., where his responsibilities included organizational change, strategic planning, and program management. Jim commanded the 2nd Infantry Division Artillery from , in the Republic of Korea, and served for more than three years in Washington, D.C. as the Joint Staff, J-5, Division Chief for Central and Eastern Europe. After service in the Army, Jim was a vice president of marketing, business development, and sales for a major defense contractor (specializing in bringing advanced technologies to market); a director of business development in multiple large companies; and a special adviser to a U.S. Government agency. Jim Church District Global Grants Assistant Chair After retiring from the Army, Jim sought out a way to connect with his Northern Virginia community and engage in activities of a charitable and service nature. He was invited to attend a meeting of the Rotary Club of Dulles International Airport and found what he was looking for. Jim has had the privilege of serving his Club as: the Sergeant-at-Arms, Club Secretary and President. Jim is, now, the President of the Dulles Foundation Club which is the 503c arm of our Rotary Club responsible for managing our charitable funds. For the past several years, Jim has also served as the Global Grants Assistant Chair for the District. Foundation receives highest rating from Charity Navigator For the 10th consecutive year, The Rotary Foundation has received the highest rating four stars from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the U.S. In the most recent ratings, the Foundation earned the maximum of 100 points for demonstrating both strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency. in a letter to the Foundation, Charity Navigator notes that "only 1 percent of the charities we evaluate have received at least 10 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that The Rotary Foundation outperforms other charities in America. This exceptional designation from Charity Navigator sets The Rotary Foundation apart from its peers and demonstrates to the public its trustworthiness." The rating reflects Charity Navigator's assessment of how the Foundation uses donations, sustains its programs and services, and practices good governance and openness. January 2018 Page 9

Behind the Scenes of Polio Eradication: Rotary s national advocacy advisers are putting polio on the world stage. Here s how, by Diana Schoberg At the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta in June, world leaders were on hand to celebrate a historic $1.2 billion in commitments to finance polio eradication. It was a huge moment for the polio eradication effort. But, how did it come about? A group of Rotary volunteers has been hard at work behind the scenes: our PolioPlus national advocacy advisers. This team of Rotarians from donor countries has a mission to make sure polio eradication is on the global agenda. In the corridors of power, they relentlessly work their connections lunches with government officials, phone calls with ministers to garner money and support for ending the disease. And, they ve been successful: Since Rotary s advocacy program started in 1995, it has generated more than $8 billion toward ending polio. The United States is the leading public sector donor to global polio eradication with a cumulative investment that totals $3 billion through fiscal 2017, thanks in large part to the leadership of Past RI President James L. Lacy and members of the Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force for the U.S. Their advocacy colleagues around the world have done remarkable work as well. The national advocacy advisers always come through in knowing the right people to speak with in government and in arranging key meetings, says Michael K. McGovern, International PolioPlus Committee chair. No matter the political party in charge, the Rotarians are known and respected. This year, the pledging of funds wasn t the only priority. Working with our Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners, the advocates had the ambitious goal of getting a commitment to polio eradication from the world s most powerful nations. The advocacy advisers saw two unprecedented political victories when both the health ministers and leaders of the Group of twenty, an informal bloc of countries accounting for 85 percent of the global economy, committed to strive to finish our work and end the disease. Rotary s message about ending polio is reaching the key decision-makers. January 2018 Page 11
