3 History Collaboration between NCAA Foundation and the Division 1A Athletic Directors Association First group of NCAA institutions (n=46) attend orientation and implement the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program

4 Mission Statement Promote student-athletes ownership of their academic, athletic, career, personal and community responsibilities. Meet the changing needs of student-athletes. Promote respect for diversity and inclusion among student-athletes. Assist student-athletes in identifying and applying transferable skills.

5 Mission Statement, continued Enhance partnerships between the NCAA, member institutions and their communities for the purpose of education. Foster an environment that encourages student-athletes to effectively access campus resources. Encourage the development of character, integrity and leadership skills.

8 Values Statements We believe in: The total development of the student-athlete in the five commitment areas. Promoting a balanced experience for the student-athlete within the university environment and surrounding community.

9 Value Statements, continued Providing an environment that promotes the development of values clarification, goal setting and responsible decision-making. Providing an environment of proactive programming rather than reactive intervention. Continual evaluation and support of the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program at member institutions and conference offices.

10 Current Membership Total number of CHAMPS/Life Skills Institutions and conference offices: 583 (as of July 2007) Division I-A = 128 Division I-AA = 106 Division I- AAA = 91 Division II = 128 Division III = 129 (16 in the Class of 2007!) Partnering Association = 1

11 Myths MYTH: Only Division I-A schools can afford to participate in the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program. FACT: There are 454 non-division I-A schools currently participating in the program. There are 128 Division II schools and 129 Division III schools who sponsor successful CHAMPS/Life Skills programs on their campus.

12 MYTH: I need to hire a full-time staff person or large staff to run this program. FACT: Only about 10 percent of all CHAMPS/Life Skills programs employ a fulltime coordinator. Ninety percent of coordinators have additional, non-champsrelated responsibilities (i.e., academic counselors, coaches, compliance coordinators).

13 MYTH: I need a large budget to run the CHAMPS/Life Skills program properly. FACT: Forty-eight percent of CHAMPS/Life Skills programs (all divisions) have a budget of $1000 or less. With a little creativity and partnerships with other offices on campus, you can really do a lot for your studentathletes.

14 Benefits and Resources Access to program materials and student-athlete needs assessment Eligible to attend the annual Orientation and Continuing Education Conferences Eligible to nominate a slate of four student-athletes, from which one will be selected to attend the National Leadership Conference Access to the CHAMPS/Life Skills Coordinators listserve which allows for resource sharing and collaboration with coordinators from across the country

15 What are the have tos? From the NCAA perspective New CHAMPS/Life Skills schools are required to send a representative to the Orientation Conference in the year of acceptance. Orientation is also open to new coordinators from existing Life Skills Programs. From an institutional perspective Program implementation, staffing, budget and oversight are at individual institutions discretion.
