3 02 03 Message from the Director As a Scholar you will have the chance to work on cutting edge research projects in different fields, as well as meeting some of the greatest scientists and engineers alive. Why enter the Scholars Programme? NTU initiated this programme, specially designed for exceptional students with a deep passion in science and engineering. The is one of the premier undergraduate programmes at Nanyang Technological University for science and engineering students. The programme is named in honour of Professor, Nobel Laureate in Physics (1957) and one of the greatest scientists of our era. In 2006, NTU initiated this programme, specially designed for exceptional students with a deep passion in science and engineering, for the high-technology world of the 21st century. It shares the same philosophy as the Caltech Core Curriculum and the MIT General Institute Requirements in providing a strong and broad foundation in the basics of science and mathematics so as to empower the student to delve deeper into any discipline in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and to develop an interest in leading edge research. Over the centuries outstanding scientific and engineering discoveries have been made by individuals, but when you read their biographies or life stories, you soon realise that they did not work alone and that they had an ability to think ahead of their time; to grasp new concepts and break down boundaries in traditional thinking. They are characterized by great drive, creativity, and a willingness to take risks, and seize opportunities when they arise. The NTU s, which is named after Chen Ning Yang, a Chinese born American, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1957 for his ground breaking work in particle physics, seeks to instil exactly these attributes of drive, creativity and outside the box thinking into the participants of the programme. You will obtain a sound theoretical knowledge to facilitate an understanding of the technical and scientific challenges mankind faces today and, perhaps even more importantly, the programme will give you numerous opportunities to experiment and test the limits of current thinking. As a Scholar you will have the chance to work on cutting edge research projects in different fields, as well as meeting some of the greatest scientists and engineers alive. Since its inception in July 2006 the programme has welcomed students from all areas of science and engineering, generating stunning ideas and opportunities, I hope that I may welcome you as a Scholar in the near future. Importantly, the CNYSP provides an opportunity to pursue independent research in NTU s College of Science or College of Engineering. These research opportunities allow scholars to immerse themselves in research culture as early as year one. Students graduating from the challenging undergraduate programme will be awarded a special certificate on top of the degree certificate. 5 06 07 Scholarship Details and Other Highlights Research Opportunities benefits: Guaranteed overseas exchange for one semester with travel grant of S$5,000. Guaranteed four years of stay in NTU halls of residence. Opportunities for research attachment with monetary allowance as early as year one. Opportunities for accelerated postgraduate study (PhD). Opportunities for attending an international conference with full subsidy. Opportunities to meet top leading scientists and academics. Participation in programmes offered by the NTU Institute of Advanced Studies. Every student will be assigned a mentor who will provide guidance for the student s whole academic programme at NTU. The Nanyang Scholarship will be awarded to successful applicants. The benefits of the Nanyang Scholarship are: Subsidised tuition fees (after Tuition Grant) will be fully covered Living allowance of S$6,000 per annum Book allowance of S$500 per annum Accommodation allowance up to S$2,000 per annum (for scholars who reside in NTU hostels only) Travel grant of S$5,000 for overseas study/exchange programme (One-off) Computer allowance of S$1,500 (One-off) Settling in allowance of S$250 (One-off) No bond is attached to the Nanyang Scholarship apart from the three-year bond applicable to all PRs and international students under the MOE Tuition Grant Scheme. Eligibility of international students to apply for one of the following scholarships: ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship (for Citizens or Permanent Residents from the ASEAN countries, except ) NTU Science and Engineering Undergraduate Scholarship (for Citizens or Permanent Residents from the Asian countries, except ) Recipients of other scholarships are eligible to apply for the. Successful applicants are required to fulfil the terms and conditions of the scholarships. Scholars are required to maintain a satisfactory CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of 3.5 over 5.0. Academic performance is monitored on a semester basis. The Undergraduate Research Experience provides scholars an opportunity to pursue independent research in the NTU s colleges of Science or Engineering. The research opportunities allow scholars to immerse themselves in research culture as early as the first year. Scholars will receive monetary allowance at the rate of $10 per hour according to the number of hours worked, capped at 500 hours per academic year (or 600 hours by approval). Scholars are allowed to claim for up to 40 hours per week during Recess or Vacation and up to 10 hours per week during the Semester or Special Terms. The individual laboratory will receive compensation at the rate of $8 per hour. Undergraduate Research Experience on Campus (URECA) is open for Scholars who meet eligibility criteria. Scholars can participate in the programme by earning 4 Academic Units (AUs) throughout the programme. The research opportunities allow scholars to immerse themselves in research culture as early as the first year.

6 08 09 Research Publications Opportunities for Accelerated Post-graduate Study (PhD) The CNYSP provides scholars with an opportunity to participate in an accelerated Bachelor-PhD programme with a top scholarship as well as overseas attachment. This programme allows scholars to start post-graduate courses during their undergraduate programme before they join one of the PhD programmes in NTU. The early exposure to research under the CNYSP provides the necessary experience and skills that enable the early acceptance into the accelerated PhD track. The research experience and results obtained during the undergraduate research experience projects facilitate early completion of a PhD by up to a year. It is however not mandatory for students to pursue this option after graduating as a Scholar with a Bachelor Degree.

What attracted me most about the programme was the opportunity to engage in research projects as early as year one. Contrary to popular belief, research is not necessarily boring. Instead, we get to choose from a wide variety of research projects from different fields, according to our respective interests. Under the guidance of my professor, I learnt that research is nothing but a deep study of a subject that fascinates me and, in the process, allows me to gain new insights. I would like to encourage those keen on reading courses related to Science and Engineering to take up the CNYSP. Without challenges, there will not be improvements. If you wish to explore the multitudinous possibilities offered, then this will be the right programme for you! Pee Xiu Yi Top Scholar from Aerospace Engineering, Class of 2012 Hwa Chong Junior College Alumnus, Currently working as a Research Engineer, DSO National Laboratories Being in the CNYSP has certainly been a rewarding journey for me. For those with a deep and firm interest in science and engineering, I firmly believe that the CNYSP is an unrivalled experience. Over the years, I have worked on research projects such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and scramjet engines, which have served not only to challenge and stretch my abilities, but more importantly allowed my passion for engineering to really blossom. The highlight of my undergraduate education must have been when I was selected to do my Industrial Attachment at the United States Air Force Academy under the sponsorship of DSO National Laboratories. There I had the exciting experience of working first hand on the propulsion system of FalconLAUNCH T-1, their cadet-built sounding rocket system, from design to static fire. Given both the breadth and depth of the curriculum, the CNYSP is clearly not for everybody or just anybody, but for those with the passion and perseverance! 8 12 Hear What the Scholars say about the Scholars Programme 13 The CNYSP allows me to have the opportunity to be involved in different research projects throughout these four years. In my opinion, this has been a good exposure to explore different ideas as well as to hone my analytical skills. This is in contrast with the misconception that research is mundane and based solely on academic curriculum. Moreover, CNYSP also brought students from different countries with common interests in research and academia together. Friendships were forged in the midst of going through the ups and downs of this programme. In retrospect, CNYSP made a unique but fulfilling part of my university life. Seah Xiang Shan Sheryl, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Temasek Junior College Alumna, Once I was stumped when asked the question, why do you want to be a scholar? during the CNYSP interview. As the journey in CNYSP goes on, the answer begins to unfold itself. The CNYSP is not only about expanding one s comfort zone by rigorous interdisciplinary education, but also about developing friendship and comradeship with like-minds. I truly enjoy tackling the demanding but interesting modules with fellow scholars, and having enriched life with supportive friends in CNYSP. Long Zhaowen, Mechanical Engineering, PRC SM2 programme The CNYSP allows us to start research work in our first year under an attractive monthly stipend, giving us an early head start in terms of research experience and journal publications which are crucial for those aspiring to undertake a research career. For chemistry students, the physicsorientated curriculum greatly complements our studies and equips us with greater flexibility to apply our knowledge in a diverse range of interrelated fields. Low Man Ting, Chemistry & Biological Chemistry, National Junior College Alumna, The CNYSP is a splendid support system. It has nurtured me holistically. I recall as a freshie, I was afraid of being caught up in an over-competitive rat race of academia, especially so when my peers are the crème de la crème. However, what I found were helping hands and fantastic opportunities around every corner. We actively discuss our assignments, meet Nobel Laureates, liaise with corporations, work with world class researchers and organized conspicuous events such as the annual Dinner & Dance and Freshmen Orientation Camp. The fraternity was always there, watching each other s back, evoking success! Noel Lee En Guang, Mechanical Engineering, Nanyang Junior College Alumnus, It is a humbling experience to study together with top students from around the world. The modules are certainly not a walk in the park, but if you keep an open mind and learn sincerely, the knowledge gained will serve you well for the rest of your academic life. Koh Boon Yong James, Aerospace Engineering, Anderson Junior College Alumnus, The CNYSP has been a fruitful experience. An early exposure to scientific research has allowed me to indulge in a whole new way of learning, training myself to be more inquisitive and initiative in acquiring knowledge. In this programme, I have met scholars whom have expertise in different sciences, but share an identical passion for learning and experiencing new things. We motivate each other by sharing what we learn. These interesting interactions have inspired me in many ways. In particular, it has helped me to appreciate the passion of my life, in a much broader perspective, by realizing how it is intimately connected to all the different sciences. Nelly Ng Huei Ying, Physics & Applied Physics, Malaysia UEC Privileged, is the word to sum up my experience and a Scholar thus far. I am given the chance to work on a research project with a professor whom with guiding hands, explore the unexplored realm of cutting edge science with me. Needless to say, he inspired me and gave me more confidence to aim higher in life. On top of that, I also organized the spectacular Scholars D&D 2012 and participated in CNYSP FOC planning. All these were possible and most importantly enjoyable because of the camaraderie-like friendship (as tackling CNYSP modules is like having war) among scholars in our prided close-knitted CNYSP community. Cheng Sheng Da Jowell, Aerospace Engineering, Jurong Junior College Alumnus, It is a valuable opportunity to participate in research attachment under the CNYSP. During the research attachment, I learnt the latest research topics and was given the chance to utilize some lab facilities which I only studied in the textbook. What is more, we also have the chance to discuss academic or life problems with the professor and the PhD students in the lab. They are all really patient and their advice is indeed helpful for me. 9 14 Hear What the Scholars say about their overseas exchange experience 15 Guaranteed Overseas Exchange for One Semester Events When I first got into the CNYSP and took those cross faculty modules with the pure mathematics students, little did I expect that the knowledge that I picked up to come in that useful when I did a summer programme at the London School of Economics doing an extremely challenging module on Options and Financial Derivatives. In fact, with the strong foundation that I picked up in the CNYSP, I actually performed way above average, outshining some pure finance students. Lim Sian Lak Andre, Aerospace Engineering, Anglo-Chinese Junior College Alumnus, Under the CNYSP, I was given the opportunity to attend summer school programme in Telecom Business School (Paris). The new friends that I have made overseas are a great bunch of people and I will always remember the nights we spent travelling around Paris! Additional to that, the Management and French Language classes have allowed me to gain a better understanding of the European cultures and also raised my social awareness in unique situations. The opportunity to travel abroad is definitely not to be missed and I have the CNYSP office to thank for it! Phang Chu Xiang Derek, Chemistry & Biological Chemistry, Anderson Junior College Alumnus, I went to Georgia Institute of Technology in USA for one semester as part of my school overseas exchange. It was definitely a great experience as I kept an open mind, eager to know more about the American Culture. The classes were held in classrooms instead of the mass lectures as compared to NTU. There were no tutorial sessions as well. Class sizes are small and lessons were very interactive. Students were encouraged to speak up and engage in discussion with the professors during the lesson. Its main role is to foster close ties between the scholars, to promote the CNYSP and to look after the welfare of the scholars themselves. These objectives are achieved mainly through events specially created by the executive committee of the club. Some examples of such events are the freshmen orientation camp, annual dinner and dance, regular outings and even exam welfare packages. All Scholars automatically become part of the club and the executive committee is formed by scholars who are willing to volunteer their time and energy and are also voted in via a stringent electoral process. As the community of Scholars hail from all over the world, the club strives to encourage cross-cultural exchange and interaction through its many activities which are open to all its members.
