3 2 The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is an independent, public charity established in September 1996 by a steering committee of local civic leaders to gather permanent funds to support our area. The Foundation serves a region from Martinsville/Henry County through Danville/Pittsylvania County to South Boston/Halifax County, including Caswell County and the neighboring North Carolina counties. Community foundations are established to manage a collection of separate funds created by individuals and corporations a community of donors to enhance the quality of life in a local area. These funds are pooled and invested under the direction of a board of directors comprised of community leaders. Income from the funds is distributed in the form of grants and scholarships. The first community foundation was created in 1914 in A N N U A L R E P O R T C O M M U N I T Y What is The Community Foundation? Leaving a Legacy Many individuals have already created a legacy by giving through the Community Foundation of the Dan River Region. Anderson Dorothy Braswell Henrietta Clark Mary Jo Davis Roy L. Doss Eugene Evans Dolores Feldman Moses Merricks Arnold and Elizabeth Porter Herbert Sater Mary Carter Stone Benjamin Sugg John C. 5 4 Starting a Fund We invite you to join the donors who are building a strong Community Foundation for the future of our community. Perhaps you have had a lifelong commitment to a particular charitable field and wish to support that interest in perpetuity. You may have a specific charity or charities in mind to receive income from your fund or you may prefer an unrestricted gift, allowing the Foundation to determine where needs and opportunities are greatest in the community. You, and perhaps your family, may choose to be involved as advisors to a fund. The Community Foundation encourages potential donors to also consult with their attorneys, accountants and tax advisors to learn more about charitable giving and establishing a fund through estate planning. Donors can create their own named fund for a minimum of $10,000 ($25,000 for scholarships) or they can contribute, in any amount, to an existing fund of the Foundation. Unrestricted Funds give the Foundation maximum flexibility in responding creatively and effectively to the community s most compelling needs and opportunities. These funds are among the Foundation s most important assets, capable of addressing community needs as they change over time. Field of Interest Funds are restricted by the donor at the time of creation to support a particular area of interest, such as children, the elderly, the arts, or the environment, etc. Once established, field of interest funds can grow through gifts from others who see them as a way to address their own charitable interests. Designated Funds enable donors, at the time funds are established, to name one or more specific organizations to benefit from the fund permanently. The Foundation A N N U A L R E P O R T C O M M U N I T Y ensures that the designated recipients receive support as long as they remain in existence and continue to fulfill the intended charitable purpose. Donor Advised Funds allow you to recommend which charitable organizations should receive grants from your fund and in what amounts. Many donors choose to give to multiple nonprofits through a donor-advised fund. Our board of directors is legally responsible for approving all grants. Scholarship Funds allow our donors to invest in the future by helping deserving students in our community. As the donor, you determine the criteria students must meet to receive your scholarship. Your gift can help students from preschool to postgraduate achieve their lifetime dreams. The Community Foundation provides the expertise to handle all of the application and selection process. New Web Site Unveiled Online giving available for first time The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region has unveiled its completely renovated web site, For the first time, donors will be able to give online to the Foundation or one of its 94 component funds. We are very excited to be able to offer online giving to our donor base across the country, said Debra L. Dodson, Executive Director. As The Community Foundation continues to grow, so has our need to keep our online presence up-to-date and attractive. Early users have found the web site easy to navigate. Primary headings include Give, Receive, Learn and Impact. Other choices include Designing Your Gift, Story Spotlight, News & Events, Set Up a Fund, Donate Online and Apply for a Grant. The site also offers a variety of video testimonials from Board members, donors and scholarship recipients. The site redevelopment was underwritten by a grant from the J.T.- Minnie Maude Charitable Trust.

19 18 The Fund for Halifax County Permanently Established with Community Foundation A N N U A L R E P O R T C O M M U N I T Y The Fund for Halifax County has been permanently established with The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region. A gift of $10,000 from the Chastain Home of Halifax, Virginia met the minimum required to endow the Fund. The Fund for Halifax County was introduced April 21, 2010 at a Chamber Business After Hours hosted by The Community Foundation with The Prizery. The Fund s current balance is $11,600, thanks to numerous smaller donations. The Fund for Halifax County is a unique opportunity for citizens, organizations and businesses to help build an endowment to improve and enrich lives in Halifax County. The Community Foundation will continue to encourage donations of all sizes and types as it seeks to further grow the fund. Major General (Ret.) Mayor Carroll Thackston presented the Foundation with the first gift for The Fund for Halifax County. Thackston served on the Community Foundation Board of Directors for six years. Logan Young currently represents Halifax County on the Board. We plan to develop a local advisory committee to help review grant awards from the Fund, said Debra L. Dodson, Executive Director of The Community Foundation. Halifax County nonprofit organizations with 501c3 status can register with the Foundation in order to receive the first grant application materials next year. Anyone can make donations to The Fund for Halifax County. Checks should be made to The Community Foundation, with the Halifax County Fund specified, and mailed to 541 Loyal Street, Danville, VA Gifts of stock, life insurance, and personal property can be accepted, as well as will bequests. The Community Foundation has made over $1,000,000 in grants in Halifax County since its formation in In 2003, the Chastain Home for Gentlewomen gave a gift of $1,030,000 to The Community Foundation to provide three years of grantmaking to charitable organizations assisting elderly women in Halifax County. In 2000, a gift from the estate of Benjamin M. Sugg established a fund to provide annual grants to the Clover Cemetery. Currently a donor is working to raise the $10,000 minimum to endow the Gideon Miller Cancer Fund in memory of the former employee of Wells Fargo in Halifax County. The Foundation began in 1996 as DPC Community Foundation with a core service area of Danville, Pittsylvania and Caswell Counties. In 2004, the Foundation changed its name to The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region to offer its services to Martinsville/ Henry County and South Boston/ Halifax County. For more information on The Fund for Halifax County or establishing a charitable fund of any type, contact the Foundation office at or visit the web site
