Thyagarajan thyagu_vel@yahoo.co.in I am happy to inform that a no. of new student branches are formed in the past 6 to 7 months and the count has reached 152. Some of the dormant branches were also invigorated and all most all the branch counselors are actively involved in carrying out various professional activities for the benefit of the student members. Our Executive committee members are also making all-out efforts to participate in the activities in the form of gracing the occasion as chief guest or as key note speaker or motivator or invited speaker for one of the sessions etc., When we see the statistics, majority of the student members are from final year or pre-final year. As one of the first of-its kind initiatives, the executive committee of IEEE Madras Section approved the financial assistance of Rs1,50,000/- for the final year student Rs15,000/- per project (LINK Vol.7(7), July 2010). We had received 31 projects proposals for financial assistance. About 60 IEEE members helped in evaluating the projects and recommended 10 projects based on originality, industrial/social relevance, practical viability etc., The list of selected projects is made available on the web and the teams are informed individually. The 50% financial assistance will be sent by cheque drawn in the name of corresponding IEEE student branch bank account and rest of the payment will be made after receiving the completed project report. I take this opportunity to congratulate the winners and wish them all the best for successful completion of their IEEE funded project. It is the time, the final year students will be planning for their future career whether it is higher studies (M.S, M. E/ M.Tech or M. B.A), or Core Job /IT Job Employment or Entrepreneurship. If you want to pursue MS abroad, you may have to take up TOEFL and GRE. You have to look into updated formats and procedures ( as they change time to time. Some of the other related works include: Reco letters: The reco letters can be prepared by giving the details of the following aspects: Academic performance, Analytical ability, Research potential, Technical strength, Personal traits (hard work, sincerity, getting along with team members, emotional stability, leadership quality), Seminar/conference/pre-conf tutorial participation/presentation, Mini projects/ major project and cocurricular & extra-curricular activities (NSS/ NSO/YRC etc). Small Savings Dr. S. Thiruvengadam, Dean & Professor (Retd.) NIT Kozhikode and SVCE, Chennai An old adage says Small drops maketh a mighty ocean. In tune with this, small quantum of energy saved, will add up and contribute to substantial savings of energy. This article aims to focus on saving of energy by tiny and small consumers. It may be surprising to perceive that the simple acting of switching off of ONE KW of power (when not needed) at the consumer end will be equivalent to saving or not generating more than 1.5 to 2 KW power at the generation end. This is tantamount to just removing that much of load off the system. It will become clear if the path of the current that contributes, to the delivery of this ONE KW of power to the consumer, is visualized. From the load end to the generating source, there are at least four to five sections through which the current flows. They are HT transformers at sending end, transmission lines and then LT transformers at the distribution end, followed by distributors. This flow of current causes veritable losses- resistive and magnetic. These losses may add up to about 0.6KW for delivering a load of 1KW at consumer s end depending on the age and quality of equipments used. Furthermore, by switching off this load, the saved power /energy and corresponding fuel (when viewed from a global perspective), can be used to generate power for power starved someone else. This will go a long way in arresting fast depletion of the limited raw sources of energy. This non- burnt fuel due to this deferment of load of 1KW will also help to reduce global warming in the long run. Hence small savings in energy is a concept worth adopting. Charity begins at home - the proverb says. Similarly, small energy savings should begin at home i.e. at domestic or small consumer level. Some simple house keeping measures will help plug the leakholes of energy. Aged equipments like motors and pumps need replacement as the older the equipment, more will be the losses in friction and similar ways. Electric motors should be operated at rated voltage and as far as possible at near full load to ensure maximum efficiency. For example, pumping of water can be deferred to the time of the day when voltage is normal. Another energy guzzler is the lighting load. Replacement of filament lamps by CFL will go a long way in saving considerable energy. The ROI in such cases is not too delayed. Yet another sector where hidden scope for energy saving exists is in the judicious use of electronic equipments like entertainment gadgets and computers. One may think electronic equipments consume less power (compared to motors, heaters and lighting equipments) and hence there is little scope to save energy. This is not true. Normally users neglect to switch off/ remove from power points these electronic equipments like TV, CD players, Computers etc. They are left to hibernate in the so called waiting mode over even 24 hours. All these equipments are fitted with step-down transformers which consume power in the form of magnetic losses. These losses though small in quantity will aggregate to large energy loss over hours. By the simple act of switching off supply, this energy loss could be avoided. Even though very small, while considered separately, the energy saved could swell to large quantities because of the large number of TV, Video Players, Computers and similar equipments in wide use. In conclusion the author wishes to exhort all the readers of this article to attempt implementing the above suggestions at their house level and thus derive the relevant benefits and also spread this message of SMALL SAVINGS. Acknowledgement: The author wishes to record his thanks to Ms T. Ramya for her help in preparing this article 10
