5 Procedure PhD Prize 2007 The jury: -Sorin Melinte, - Françoise Remacle, - Erik Neyts, - Alejandro Silhanek (replaced Victor Moshchalkov who was a promoter of one of the candidates), - Kristiaan Temst (chairman). Selection made based on: - PhD theses, and - CV of the candidates, - letters of support from the candidate s respective promoters.

6 Procedure - II PhD Prize 2007 Criteria for warding the prize are: - the scientific quality of the thesis, - output of the candidate, - relevance of the work for the IAP network research. Discussions: electronically. All jury members presented a ranking of the candidates plus an argumentation for their ranking. Finally, a consensus amongst the jury members was sought.

7 Candidates Golibjon Berdiyorov (UA) Steven Brems (KUL) Sebastien Faniel (UCL) Joris Van de Vondel (KUL) PhD Prize 2007 Laureate of the 2008 IAP PhD Prize A difficult decision: all four candidates had a very strong case. All four of them deserve a congratulation for their scientific achievements. It was finally decided that Joris Van de Vondel would be this year s laureate for the IAP PhD Prize. The jury praises the novelty of his work, the quality of the resulting publications, and the relevance of the work for at least two of the IAP work packages.

8 PhD Prize 2007 Remarks by the PhD Prize Committee Chairman All jury members worked very hard to produce an objective evaluation of the candidates and the discussions have been very open and productive. Yet it remains a fact that, by definition, the jury members will likely be connected in some way to some of the candidates. Suggestion: To ask one or two additional external experts. 9 Report by the Advisory Committee Member Prof. Dr. J. Nogues I have red in detail the magnetic parts (WP2) of your IAP report "Quantum effects in Clusters and nanowires" and browsed through the other WPs. I have to say that I am most impressed for the quantity and quality of the work. The only thing I could somewhat critizise is the limited joint collaboration within the network involving more than 2 partners. However, from my own experience I know that this is rather difficult, especially the first year. In summary I have to congratulate "the network" for your excellent work. I am not sure if you need an "official statement" from me. If this is the case, do not hesitate to contact me.
