5 ESF in Setting Science Agendas for Europe European Science Foundation provides a common platform to its Member Organisations in order to: advance European research explore new directions for research at the European level ESF s purpose to serve the needs of European research community in a global context through a range of activities ESF s values: excellence, openness, responsiveness, pan- European, ethical awareness and human values. 5

In-depth investigation of physical properties of graphene and development of methods to control its electronic properties and transport characteristics 2. Graphene synthesis using SiC, investigation of physical properties of graphene on SiC, and development of graphene-based transistor using this material 3. 21 Scientific Committee and its mandate Members of the Scientific Committee Project Leaders (or another representative from each CRP) ESF representative (normally ESF EUROCORES Programme Coordinator) MO representatives may attend as observers The Chair is nominated from amongst the SC members ESF provides secretariat to the Scientific Committee (ESF Programme Coordinator + Administrator). Scientific Committee is responsible for preparation and implementation of the networking and dissemination plan scientific guidance and coordination reporting to the Management Committee (through ESF Programme Coordinator) meeting regularly (once/twice per year) representing the interests of PIs, APs, and other members of the Programme communication of the decisions and other important information to the members of their CRPs. 21

24 Networking rules Requirement: Must be cross-crp! At least two CRPs involved. Possible events: working group meetings, seminars, workshops, symposia, conferences summer schools, specialised courses,... Eligibility: applicants must be PLs or PIs. APs can be co-applicants. Beneficiaries can be: PLs, PIs, Project Members (PhD students, post-doc researchers, senior scientists, etc.) participating within an Individual Project. NB: APs and external invited experts are self-funded. Networking support can be granted to a limited number of these groups upon clear justification. Location: normally in one of the countries with a fully participating IP. Exceptions by decision & justification by SC. Co-sponsorship: co-sponsorship is encouraged; prior approval of sponsors by ESF Programme Coordinator necessary 24
25 Networking rules / procedure Procedure similar to all types of activities! Procedure: written guidelines exist for all types of activities. Proposal: applicants submit a short proposal for the activity. Application: on-line at least three months in advance through a link provided either on the programme website or by the ESF Office. Approval: the proposal is forwarded to SC for approval via consensus (NB: PLs who are proposers/co-organisers are excluded form the approval). Money: after approval, 80% of the requested amount are transferred. Reporting: report on the event must be provided to SC within two months after the event. Final payment only after final scientific and financial report. 25
26 Dissemination rules Procedure: written guidelines exist for all types of activities. Eligible events: invited sessions at conferences; workgroup meetings for publications (submitted online) Other eligible items: Publications: special issues, papers in payable journals, books, leaflets, posters, etc. (submitted offline); Dissemination travel grants to conferences outside EUROCORES while promoting EUROCORES, e.g., invited sessions (submitted offline); Other: to be discussed with the ESF Coordinator. Eligibility: applicants must be PLs or PIs. Beneficiaries can be: PLs, PIs, Project Members (PhD students, post-doc researchers, senior scientists, etc.) participating within an Individual Project. Co-sponsorship: co-sponsorship is encouraged; prior approval of sponsors by ESF Programme Coordinator necessary. Reporting and money flow: similar to networking 26
27 Short-term visit rules Short-Term Visits : Visits to another CRP within the same or different EUROCORE for up to a maximum of 6 weeks. Eligibility: Applicant must be member of a EUROCORES Programme (see general networking guidelines) Preference given to junior scientists (PhD students & postdocs) Only Cross-CRP visits are eligible; intra-crp travel is intra-crp supported. Exceptions: Associated Partners, Cooperating Partners and external invited experts are generally self-funded. However, with the approval of the programme s Scientific Committee, networking support can be granted to a limited number of these groups upon clear justification of the added-value of their participation in the given activity. 27
28 Acknowledgement EuroGRAPHENE shoule be acknowledged in all publications, presentations, posters and dissemination activities related to the programme. The standard sentence to be used: This [publication/work/event/activity] [is/has been] supported [, in part,] by the European Science Foundation (ESF) under the EUROCORES Programme EuroGRAPHENE. NB: Only publications aknowledging the programme should be reported in mid-term and final reports. Think of your LOGO! 28

30 Reporting (forms in process of changing) Two reports: mid-term & final Purpose: to assess scientific cooperation and the interactions among the investigators, as well as merits and potential of the programme. Deadline: within 2 months after mid-term and end of the programme Report: new forms in preparation, but generally criteria as for the selection of outline proposals: Novelty/Originality: most innovative/original scientific contribution of each CRP; Multidisciplinarity: how is each CRP working towards (or achieving) multidisciplinary research; Collaborative Research: results of CRP that would not have been achieved (or would have taken longer to achieve) in an individual project; European-added value: European dimension given to National funding (e.g: building up ERA; developing critical mass of expertise; addressing issues of scale and scope). For CRPs involving partners outside Europe illustrate their added value to the programme and contribution to the field of research in Europe; Relevance to the Call: achievements most relevant to the Call.
