17 STRUCTURED WORKPLACE LEARNING Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) is a mandatory component for all students attending the SCTTTC and an important part of the preparation of students for the workplace. While training onsite develops skills it is on the job that students see the reality of what is learnt in class and get the opportunity to develop skills with a host employer. Students must complete a minimum of 2 weeks (80 hours) placement over the duration of their course and complete the associated log book requirements. Each employer completes a SWL Evaluation for students forming a useful tool in preparation of resumes and proof of employability. Full details and requirements will be provided as part of the Personal Development Program that students participate in at the SCTTTC. COORDINATING SWL Students are responsible for planning their time to ensure they complete their SWL in a timely manner that best utilises their time over the duration of their course. Students need to be organised early to coordinate with employs to maximise options and as many employers are in high demand for work placements. The SCTTTC is flexible with release for student placements and the best option for each student may differ according to school and personal requirements. Students are encouraged to utilise school holidays for perform work placement and some schools offer a release day each week that is ideal for students to utilise for SWL. Work Experience Agreement (WEA) Form - mandatory It is imperative that a Queensland Government WORK EXPERIENCE AGREEMENT form (WEA) be filled out PRIOR to the commencement of every placement. This is an Education Queensland requirement and the must be signed by the student, parent / guardian, work experience provider and then returned to SCTTTC for Principal signature. Once complete this form ensures that the student & work experience provider are covered under WorkCover QLD for any injuries or accidents whilst on work experience. This is a legal document and student cannot participate in any work experience whatsoever unless this form has been completed and endorsed by SCTTTC. Minimum Requirements for each course at SCTTTC in 2018 (40 hours = I week = 1 block) Cert II Automotive 80 hours (2 weeks) Cert I Construction 80 hours (2 weeks) Cert II Plumbing - 80 hours (2 weeks) Cert II Electrotechnology 80 hours (2 weeks)

18 Suggested timing and scheduling: It is highly recommended that students undertake their first week of SWL within the first block of school holidays after Term 1. The later students leave commencement of SWL may make it more difficult to obtain due to sheer numbers of students from other schools, including year 10 s seeking work placements. NB: Some students have release days from school that can be used weekly for SWL placements. Students could organise to perform placement once a week or 3 days one week, 2 days the following week which would equate to 5 days = 1 week. Students are encouraged to explore Exam Blocks and utilise this time for SWL if limited/no exams are to be held in blocks. Students will be able to utilise a combination of Exam Block, in some cases school allocated time and school holidays in order to complete SWL. PLANNING SWL The coordination of SWL placements is the responsibility of the student as part of their Personal Development in job seeking skills. Students will have workshops on preparing for SWL, contacting employers etc to assist with this process. They are to keep a record of employers contacted and outcomes of contacts. (copy included). Once placement is agreed to contact details need to be provided to Industry Liaison Officer or SCTTTC Manager to complete agreement paperwork. Ensure that the Work Experience Agreement is fully completed and signed by all parties prior to the start of the placement. If a student is encountering difficulty in obtaining a placement they can approach the Industry Liaison Officer who will support them further with locating employers. Students need to arrange to meet with their employer prior to starting the placement and have an interview, providing the employer with a copy of their resume. This allows all final arrangements to be made. Students will be required to work to the conditions of the employer eg. Length of day etc. If part-time work is impacted students need to make prior arrangements with employer that time on the job for SWL is not impacted. INDUSTRY LIAISON OFFICER The Industry Liaison Officer (ILO) The ILO has the role to mentor and provide support to students for SWL. The ILO will follow up with students to monitor their approach to coordinating placements, if necessary contacting parents/caregivers. Once students are on the job the ILO will monitor the student through phone and will conduct a site visit and have conversations with students and employers.

19 ISSUES ON THE JOB Occasionally students encounter issues on the job if there are problems the ILO needs to be contacted immediately to address concerns raised. On occasions such as verbal harassment, bullying, WH&S risk students will be withdrawn from the site. SCHOOL-BASED APPRENTICESHIPS (SAT) If an Employer is interested in taking on an SWL Student as a SAT, the mandatory two (2) weeks SWL is to be completed prior to sign up.
