1 Training & Supervisory Activities NTI Bulletin, 39 / &2, 27-3 TRAINING & SUPERVISORY ACTIVITIES During January - June I National TB Programme (NTP) a) Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) (i) Training of Trainers The National Tuberculosis Institute (NTI) faculty and concerned staff actively participated as facilitators in the following training programmes. As part of the training activity the trainees were taken to tuberculosis (TB) units of Yeshwanthpur and Hosahalli for field demonstration. Besides, the trainees, visited Animal Model Research Unit for a briefing on the importance of animal experimentation in control of TB. () At NTI of participants Details 20 th - 3 st January 24 Thirteen (3) Doctors, STLS and 6 STS from Karnataka, Kerala & Himachal Pradesh attended the Training of Trainers Programme th - 3 st Two doctors from Bangladesh sponsored by WHO attended 02 January in the comprehensive training on TB Control. 20 th - 3 st An STS from NRL (an NGO), Nepal attended the training 0 January of Trainers for TB Supervisors. 20 th Jan - 4 th A doctor from Myanmar sponsored by WHO attended the 0 February comprehensive training on TB Control. 7 th Feb - 0 st March State TB Officers, District TB Officers, City TB Officers, Professors and Associate Professors of Medical Colleges from different parts of the country took part in the Modular Training Programme under RNTCP. 6 7 th - 2 th April Five () Medical Officers, 2 Epidemiologists, Bacteriologist, Reader in Thoracic Medicine and 2 Statistical Assistants from different parts of the country participated. Guest lectures were arranged on 9 th April. Dr Vasist, STO, State TB Centre, New Delhi and Dr Bhatia WHO Consultant, Central TB Division, Dte, GHS, New Delhi delivered lectures on "Role of STDC in TB Control & Role of State TB Control Societies" and Research priorities in RNTCP respectively. As part of the training activity, the trainees were taken to BSA Road Dispensary for field demonstration. Three (3) Dot providers and 3 patients were interviewed. 7 6 th - 28 th June 4 RNTCP Modular Training for STOs/DTOs/CTOs from Maharashtra, Nagaland, Andhra Pradesh, UP, Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya and West Bengal. 27

Dr Preetish S Vaidyanathan, SMO, participated as facilitator in Sensitization Programme on RNTCP for the faculty and Post Graduate of Bowring Hospital, held at Bowring Hospital,. 30 th May - th June - Two Laboratory Technicians participated as facilitators in training of LTs & STLS of North Eastern Indira Gandhi Research; Institute & Medical Science, Shillong. Chickamagalur district of Karnataka 0 27 th - 28 th Kolar District Dr L Suryanarayana, CMO(NFSG) undertook appraisal February of RNTCP implementation. 20 th & 27 th March Christian Medical College, Vellore Dr B Mahadev, CMO (NFSG) participated as resource person in the South Zone workshop for Involvement of Medical Colleges in RNTCP and spoke on scientific Basis and Rationale of Diagnosis, follow-up examinations under RNTCP besides facilitating the group discussions th March Adichunchunagiri Institute of Medical Sciences, BG Nagara Mandya District Dr VH Balasangameswara, CMO (NFSG) delivered a lecture on RNTCP and Role of Medical Colleges under RNTCP. 3 3 rd April Main Office of Mahanagara Palike, Dr (Mrs) Sophia Vijay, Sr TB Specialist, attended the meeting of Mahanagara Pallike Society for RNTCP. 4 th April Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Medical Sciences, Whitefield, Dr L Suryanarayana, CMO(NFSG) delivered a lecture on RNTCP & Diagnosis and Management of TB. 2 th April CG Hospital, Davanagere Dr.V.H.Balasangameshwara, CMO (NFSG) participated in the CME on RNTCP for the members of Government Medical Officers Association and Private Practitioners and spoke on RNTCP th April - 9 th May STC, Shillong, Meghalaya Mr D Narayana and Mr GA Manjunath, Lab-Technicians participated as facilitators for training LTs under RNTCP in which 2 Lab Technicians took part. 29

Training section was shifted from the Main Building to the 2nd floor of PV Benjamin Block. Technical reports of the following training were prepared: a. In country WHO Fellowship training held between 7 th November - 8 th December b. Training of Trainers held between 20 th - 3 st January. c. Comprehensive Training on TB Control for WHO Fellows from Bangladesh and Myanmar held between 20 th - 3 st January and 20 th January - 4 th February respectively. III Special Training A WHO fellow from Bhutan participated in the training course on TB Control from 3 rd March - th April. The sixth (6 th ) South East Asia Regional Training Course on TB Control was held at NTI from 0 th - 2 st March. A total of 7 participants representing from countries viz. Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Srilanka, Thailand and East-Timor participated in the training course. Director participated as course co-coordinator and delivered a lecture on "TB & HIV in the region". The trainees were taken to the TB Units of Mahanagara Palika for field demonstration. The Bacteriology section and the Computer Centre of the Institute were utilized for imparting training in TB Bacteriology and Computer applications respectively. On the concluding day, certificates were distributed to the participants. 32

Director visited Central TB Division, New Delhi and had discussion with the DDG (TB) on the pending administrative issues of NTI with DGHS. Director visited the office of WHO, New Delhi and had discussions with regard to WHO fellowships at NTI. Dr Prahlad Kumar, Director, attended the inaugural session of WHO/NICD training course on "Epidemiology and control of Malaria" conducted at NICD /PSU and chaired the session on ECO- Epidemiology of Malaria - presentation of KAP survey data. Dr VH Balasangameshwara, CMO (NFSG) participated in the executive committee meeting on behalf of the Director, NTI. Dr VK Chadha, Sr Epidemiologist along with Mr PS Jagannath, SA, visited Bhubaneshwar for discussion with DANTB officials on the study report concerning sample survey to estimate ARI in Orissa.
