HONDURAS» SEMIANNUAL REPORT October 2017 through March 2018 Prepared July 2018

WATER, SANITATION, AND HYGIENE IN HONDURAS PROGRAM UPDATE 6,904 PEOPLE* provided with access to clean drinking water during the fi rst half of fi scal year 2018 (October 2017 through March 2018). 1,458 new and rehabilitated wells and water points built 17% FY18 target: 8, sanitation facilities built FY18 target: 1,178 28% 932 household hand-washing facilities built 18% FY18 target: 5,093 PROGRAM OVERVIEW Thanks to your generous support, in the first half of FY18, the Honduras Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Program installed 1,458 taps from water supply systems. Of these, 1,439 taps provided safe water for 6,904 people directly in their homes, 18 taps provided safe water in nine schools, and one tap provided safe water in one healthcare facility. In the first half of FY18, eight water systems were completed. Work is in progress, and 42 additional systems will be completed by the end of the fiscal year. Sanitation and hygiene improvements also were made. For example, more than 4,000 community members participated in hygiene behaviorchange education, and 292 households constructed sanitation facilities, benefiting 1,265 people. The WASH team also made progress in schools. Forty-two latrines were built on campuses, and hand-washing stations were installed at nine schools, benefiting 1,280 students. Also, 31 school WASH clubs were formed and trained 82 percent of our annual target. In partnership with Sesame Workshop, the Ministry of Education, and other nongovernmental organizations, 945 children, ages 5 to 8, were reached through the WASH UP! program, which teaches children proper sanitation and hygiene practices, and simple ways to share this knowledge. We are excited about the amazing work being done by the Honduras WASH team. Thank you for your faithful support and prayers. The Honduras WASH team teaches hand-washing skills in schools to help reduce diseases and increase school attendance. *Of these, 2,043 were reached with World Vision U.S. private funding. 1

GOAL AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES Five-year program goal through fi scal year 2020: Provide access to clean drinking water for 200,000 PEOPLE Expected outcomes: Increased access to sustainable and safe water supply Increased access to improved sanitation facilities Improved hygiene knowledge and practices Community empowerment to facilitate sustainable WASH interventions Partnering with Dunkin Donuts to Improve WASH in Schools The Honduras WASH Program is partnering with Dunkin Donuts to implement WASH in four schools in coffee-growing areas in Copán Ruins. From August 2017 through March 2018, 238 children gained access to basic sanitation facilities and hand-washing stations. Each station has three taps, a soap dispenser, liquid soap, and towels to dry hands. In addition, an informative sign illustrates the steps to follow for proper handwashing. A total of 214 students were trained using the Healthy Home and School approach to encourage the practice of good hygiene. We have learned the critical moments for handwashing. From now on, we will put this habit into practice because we want to avoid diseases, said Iris, 10. The WASH team also trained Dunkin Donuts staff on issues related to healthy hygiene habits. One project innovation has been the use of Ecofilters in schools, enabling 238 students to access safe water. The Ecofilter is endorsed by the World Health Organization, and it is one of the best alternatives for water treatment in Honduras. This technology is environmentally friendly because it prevents deforestation caused by boiling water and regulates the emission of gases that contribute to global warming. 4 SEMIANNUAL HIGHLIGHTS Activities The WASH team is implementing a pumping water system in the communities of Pueblo Viejo and Roblar Tupido, where the average income of families is less than $43 per month. This system mechanically pumps water from the water source to a storage tank. The team is working with the Forestry Sciences University to ensure environmental management of the El Pital microwatershed, where the spring that will supply water to these two communities is located. Latrines with menstrual hygiene management facilities were built in five schools. These latrines provide privacy and encourage girls to attend and stay in school. Partnerships The Honduras WASH team is working with local government and the ministries of Health and Education in the Comprehensive Healthcare Service for the Adolescent project. Planning and construction of sanitation and hygiene facilities began in a health center and two school clinics so students and patients will have access to these facilities. In addition to helping to implement the WASH UP! program and the healthcare services project above, the Ministry of Education supports the organization and training of school WASH clubs, community cleanup campaigns, and the celebration of commemorative events related to WASH. Latin America and Caribbean Along with Honduras, this region includes national WASH programs in Bolivia, Haiti, Mexico, and Nicaragua. The region strives for high WASH service levels, including access to a safe water source at home. In the first half of the year, 1,946 new and rehabilitated water points were built in the region, providing safe water to 18,899 people. World Vision brought together WASH program staff from the five countries to review progress and share learnings in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, in November Programming in the region continues to emphasize WASH in schools 12,610 students were reached with clean water at 36 schools, and 371 school WASH clubs were formed during the reporting period. FAITH INTEGRATION SAFE WATER HEALTHY HYGIENE 28 faith leaders were trained on hygiene and sanitation so they can share behaviorchange messages with their congregations and communities. 932 households were educated on water treatment and equipped with products to disinfect drinking water. Community and school sanitation committees were organized to make periodic visits to households to verify healthy hygiene habits are being practiced. 3

Ensuring that patients, including children and pregnant mothers, as well as healthcare workers have access to WASH facilities at health clinics and hospitals is fundamental to health because it allows for a more hygienic environment. Health centers also are a platform to learn healthy hygiene practices for use at the health center and at home. According to the World Health Organization and UNICEF, many healthcare facilities in developing countries lack basic WASH access. In response, World Vision is prioritizing our life-saving WASH work to improve access in healthcare settings in Honduras and across the globe. During this reporting period, the Honduras WASH team reached one healthcare facility with clean water. We seek to expand efforts in healthcare facilities during the remainder of this year and beyond. This work is essential to achieve the full benefits of our shared vision of universal WASH coverage by Successful programming requires a collaborative approach with the health sector, including government ministries of public health and nongovernmental partners. We look forward to sharing accomplishments and learnings in the future as World Vision strengthens and expands our WASH work in healthcare settings. 4

LONG-TERM IMPACT World Vision is committed to reaching the most vulnerable children and their families through its WASH programming, especially with sanitation. This includes families living in extreme poverty, especially people with disabilities, widows, and child-headed households. Improved, equitable, and well-maintained sanitation facilities are necessary to keep families safe and healthy in the long run. In Honduras, World Vision partners with the community, government, and local organizations to determine the needs of vulnerable people. This includes meeting with vulnerable families and designing sanitation Water is Life! facilities that meet their unique needs. In cases where ultra-poor families cannot access these facilities, WASH committees help determine reduced user fees or who receives subsidized latrine materials to ensure access to improved sanitation facilities. Similarly, trained local artisans design and sell disability-friendly latrine materials. Faith leaders are supported to share WASH messages to combat stigmas that can keep vulnerable families from using household or institutional sanitation facilities. Sustainable WASH means, everyone, everywhere has access to quality sanitation that is sustainable for years to come. 12 WASH committees formed with fee-collection systems FY18 target: people trained in repair and construction of WASH facilities 28 faith leaders who participated in WASH programming 25% 32% FY18 target: 52 77% FY18 target: 112 Andino Fany, 42 (pictured right), lives in the Matazano community, which lacked safe water because of difficult geographical conditions. Andino explained, We had to walk to carry the water to cook, wash clothes, and personal hygiene. It was a walk of approximately 20 minutes from the house to a well owned by our neighbors. I did this activity with my children twice a day. In September 2017, the construction of a water project in Matazano began with the support of World Vision and the Ojojona municipal government. All the members of Andino s family participated in the project. I had never seen the community so close that s why the project was finished quickly, said Andino. Now that the water project is completed, Andino said, I thank God, World Vision, and the leaders of my community for making this dream come true. Water is life, and that is why we have to take care of it! CHALLENGES AND LESSONS LEARNED WASH program operations in Honduras were impacted by civil unrest related to disputed presidential elections, from October through February. By March, WASH activities were back on track. In addition, rain washed out roads in three regions where the Honduras WASH team was working. This impacted progress because construction materials could not be transported, and community members could not travel to participate in training. Therefore, some activities were postponed to the third quarter. The price of construction materials has increased, forcing local governments to find new sources of financing. The Honduras WASH team is working with municipal governments to incorporate new partners that can contribute to constructing WASH infrastructure. One lesson learned is that the installation of water meters at the household level has generated positive changes in behavior, thus reducing waste and misuse of water. The program also is implementing microwatershed management action plans to ensure sustainability of the water systems so they continue to produce a sufficient amount of high-quality water. I am very happy because the dream I had as a child became a reality. We will no longer have to bring water from the well. Now I will have more time for my children. With the water at home, my children will be able to bathe every day. This is a blessing from heaven. Andino Fany, 42, single mother of fi ve children and two grandchildren, Matazano community 5

Johanna Hernandez, 23, holds her son David, 5, so he can wash his face and drink clean water fl owing from one of the taps in the Jamastran program area, built by the community with funding from Refi ned Technologies and other Honduras WASH donors. SAFE WATER CHANGES LIVES Drinking dirty water created perpetual health problems for the 3,000 people who live in two communities Sartenejas and Zamorano in the Jamastran program area in Eastern Honduras. Local residents collected water from the Hato River, which was contaminated by animals that drank and expelled waste there, and by pesticides that trickled into the river from the coffee and tobacco fields that provided residents a meager income. The local health clinic routinely treated children who were malnourished and suffering from diarrhea, and sometimes, cholera. Some damage can never be undone. It affects their cognitive development, said Dr. Zulema Lopez. To make matters worse, the clinic also got its water from the Hato River. The water in the delivery room was so brown and dirty, healthcare staff did not even use it to wash their hands. Families suffered the most. Every day, Johanna Hernandez, 23, walked 3.7 miles with her sons, David, 5, and Noe, 3, to get water from the river for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Shivering, she waded knee-deep into the cold, dirty water, while the boys played on the bank. Once, David nearly drowned as he was swept away by the current. Fortunately, a big rock stopped him, and he survived. In August 2017, work began to bring water to the these two communities, with funding from Refined Technologies, a chemical decontamination company in Houston, Texas, and other Honduras WASH donors. The project kicked off with a miracle when drillers, on the first try, discovered clean water. More than 600 community members then began backbreaking work that lasted four months, moving heavy rocks and digging 25 miles of trenches. In addition, a massive 60,000-gallon water tank was constructed. A water committee, comprising men and women, was formed to oversee construction and maintenance of the system. In January 2018, 3,000 people received clean water many for the first time. The local health clinic in Jamastran also received safe water. World Vision plans to implement a pilot project at the clinic that will help mothers-to-be prepare their homes for a newborn, deliver in a hygienic health clinic, and after delivery, ensure their babies are protected from infection. On behalf of Dr. Lopez, Johanna, and the Sartenejas and Zamorano communities, thank you for supporting the Honduras WASH Program. 6
