1 NEBDN Sedation Extended Duties for Dental Nurses Application pack 2017/2018 Thank you for your interest in the Extended Duties range of courses commissioned by Health Education West Midlands in collaboration with their providers. Aim of Course: To prepare candidates for the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) post qualification, Certificate in Dental Sedation Nursing. This Application Pack contains the following sections: (highlighted sections must be completed and returned) Section 1: Application to be completed by the candidate Section 2: To be completed by the employer Section 3: Person Specification/ application check list (to be signed by candidate and their employer) Appendix 1: Course dates Appendix 2: Course requirements Please ensure that Sections 1, 2 and 3 are completed and submitted together. Shortlisting of candidates will take the following into consideration: Candidates should work within NHS practice in the West Midlands region Candidates should be able to evidence that they currently work in a practice who can provide access to a minimum of 10 Intravenous Sedation and 5 Inhalation cases per month Multiple applications from the same practice may require further clarification with the employing dentist in relation to the level of commitment required to support the completion of the Record of Competence (ROC) by the relevant deadline (these will be considered on a case by case basis this may also require a delay in examination date entry in order to complete the requirements of NEBDN). 6 SECTION 2 Employer statement To be completed by the employer Health Education England West Midlands (HEEWM) has commissioned extended duties training for registered Dental Nurses employed in the delivery of NHS dental services in the West Midlands. There is no charge to the employer or to the dental nurse. The course (including 1 examination fee) is fully funded by HEEWM. In the event that the candidate does not fulfil the requirements of the Record of Competence or fails the examination, further examination fees will be self-funded for any additional examination retakes. Employing Practice may be liable for course costs should a candidate withdraw from the programme. There are limited places available on this course (20 Candidates) and therefore we require employer and dental nurse commitment to attendance on the training dates and completion of the Record of Competence. Dental Nurse applications for these courses will only be considered with a completed statement of support from their employer. The Dental Nurse will be supported by the practice to attend all taught sessions and support sessions (please see appendix 1 for dates and times) 3. The dental nurse will be supported in practice to develop the acquired skills and Record of Competence by a GDC registered Dentist employers will be asked to read and sign a Service Level Agreement and Practice Monitoring Form to confirm employers are fully aware of the requirements of the course. Please see Appendix 2 for course requirements 4. The supervising trainer will observe, support and verify that the student has completed the practical requirements of the course (sedation cases and Direct Observation Cases (DOCS) through completion of the record of competence documentation. Please see appendix 2 for full requirements. a) 10 inhalation treatment and recovery cases and b) 20 intravenous treatment and recovery cases c) Two of these to be used for case studies. 12 Advert close Friday 27th October 2017 Timescale of Application Process Shortlist by Weds 1st November - Candidates will be shortlisted according to the area in which they work (West Midlands), Employer support and if the candidate meets the person specification. Candidates will be notified by Fri 3rd November. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an information evening along with their employers on Weds 22nd Nov at 6.00pm - please make a note of this date as if shortlisted, you will be expected to attend. Course Dates Candidates will commence the course in January 2018 and are issued with a Record of Competence (ROC) and course handbook on the 1st of 4 teaching days. Attendance to all 4 teaching days is mandatory. Candidates will receive a high standard of education delivered by dental staff who are highly experienced in sedation techniques that meets the standards of IASCD document. All sessions held at Birmingham Dental Hospital Teaching day 1: Fri 12 Jan 2018, 09:00 to 17:00 Teaching day 2: Fri 26 Jan 2018, 09:00 to 17:00 Teaching day 3: Fri 23 Feb 2018, 09:00 to 17:00 Teaching day 4: Fri 23 Mar 2018, 09:00 to 17:00 *ROC support session 1: April 2018 *ROC support session 2: May 2018 ROC submission day: June ROC is completed and submitted on this date for Internal Quality Assurance and submitted to meet NEBDN examination entry deadlines. 14 Requirements of the Course Link to NEBDN syllabus: Treatment and recovery contacts: 20 Intravenous 10 Inhalation Directly Observed Clinical Assessments: -Taking and recording patients blood pressure and using an automatic cuff (10 cases) - Taking and recording patients oxygen saturation and heart rate using a pulse oximeter (10 cases) - Giving pre and post-operative instructions to a patient for inhalation sedation (10 cases) - Giving pre and post-operative instructions to a patient for intravenous sedation (10 cases) - Preparing an Inhalation sedation machine for use including safety checks (10 cases) - Drawing up drugs (10 cases) - Assisting during the cannulation of patients - Removal of a cannula (10 cases) - Clearing IV sedation equipment and drugs after use (10 cases) - Leading the dental team in the management of a simulated medical emergency (3 cases) Supplementary Outcomes: Candidates must complete the following supplementary outcomes to a level deemed satisfactory by the course provider. The supplementary outcomes will allow the candidates to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of areas of the syllabus in which they may not be able to gain clinical experience or which it may not be possible to assess by other means. The content of the supplementary outcomes will be reviewed regularly by NEBDN but currently include: - A witnessed copy of a current certificate in Immediate Life Support - A list of equipment used for sedation stating maintenance and service history - A list of emergency drugs stocked and indications for use with expiry dates - Questions relating to current national guidance on conscious sedation in dentistry - A question relating to an ethical dilemma - A short audit relating to patient satisfaction - A question relating to the advantages and disadvantages of alternative methods of pain and anxiety management - A record of continuing professional development relating to dental sedation nursing e.g. background reading, meetings, courses etc. Health Education England West Midlands Extended Duties Application Pack 2017/
