1 First Aid Training Internal Quality Assurance Policy Version one May 2015 Expected Review Date May 2016 From 1 st of October 2015 providers wishing to offer regulated first aid training are required to follow the Skills for Health document Assessment Principles & Practices in First Aid and also hold a nationally approved training qualification that includes assessment methods. Current trainers that only hold a recognised teaching qualification can gain a suitable assessing qualification via a recognised provider or attend an Awarding Organisation event in Assessing & IQA. This would allow them to both train & assess first aid courses in relation to the HSE requirement and also act as IQA for other trainer s courses. They cannot IQA their own delivery. The Head of Centre is Peter Cook & Janice Marshal as Deputy Head of Centre. 2 Introduction I. Internal Quality Assurance is the process of confirming that the assessment decisions made by all associated with Remote First Aid are accurate and consistent and that the evidence for this process is properly produced and maintained. II. Remote First Aid internally quality assures that the internal assessment decisions made by those employed by Remote First Aid comply with the standards published by the Awarding Organisation or official guide to the qualification. III. Remote First Aid also uses the opportunity provided to verify that assessment evidence is collected fairly, consistently and efficiently and that administrative procedures are correctly followed. Resources required a) Tutors [Internal Assessors} will have the qualifications and experience to deliver [train and assess] the qualification identified. b) Remote First Aid will appraise [teaching] and verify [assessment] of its staff/associate tutors once a year and record the outcome of the annual review on IAQ Form one. c) Suitable staff for undertaking an annual review will be Remote First Aid Internal Quality Assurers d) Remote First Aid Internal Quality Assurers or, Internal Quality Assurers will attend a minimum of one standardisation meeting per year in June. e) Remote First Aid Internal Quality Assurers will hold the required qualifications to fulfil this role. Methods 1) Candidates maybe continually assessed throughout the course by a suitably qualified tutor in England, Wales & Scotland. Training delivery in Northern Ireland has to be independently assessed. We reserve the right to assess any candidate independently. 2) Remote First Aid staff training and Internal Quality Assurance ensures that evidence of appropriate decisions are recorded throughout the training process. 3) Remote First Aid trainers will support assessment decisions with appropriate supporting comments on the assessment documentation for each candidate as required by the AOs. 4) Remote First Aid Internal Quality Assurer will review assessment decisions, evidence taking and administration activity performed by the tutor. 5) Ideally the assessment decisions of the tutor and Quality Assurer should agree. This process is designed to identify differences in interpretation and maintain a common interpretation within Remote First Aid tutors. 6) Constructive analysis of the decisions made is to be encouraged. 7) Where assessment decisions differ, the tutor [Internal Assessor] and Quality Assurer will discuss decisions and interpretation of published assessment guidance documents. This discussion will be recorded. If further staff training is required this will be identified by Remote First Aid and provided by Remote First Aid. 8) Internal Quality Assurance*** documentation will be completed and retained for review and be available for the AOs and/or its regulators to view. 9) Quality Assurance documentation will be available for the AOs at their request. 2

3 IQA Plan*** This IQA Plan is a method of documenting all courses delivered by the centre and a way to identify which courses have been IQA sampled and the outcome of that sampling. 4 IQA Report - Example The IQA Report is a method of documenting a sample/check. This form can be used when observing delivery/ assessment or when completing a portfolio sample. When the Report is complete it is important that both the IQA and the centre receive a copy for audit purposes.
