1 2017 REPORT TO THE C O M M U N I T Y
2 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY Our Mission Hunterdon Healthcare System delivers compassionate and exceptional care that improves the health of the community. Our Vision Hunterdon Healthcare System is recognized as a national model for providing community focused healthcare that is consumer-centered and driven by a passion for clinical excellence REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY
3 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY Dear Friends, It is our pleasure to provide you with the 2017 annual report for the Hunterdon Healthcare System. It was an exciting year as we kicked off our journey of HRO Higher Reliability Organization. Hunterdon Medical Center was fortunate to be selected by the New Jersey Hospital Association as part of a 20 hospital initiative sponsored through the Center for Medicare and Medicaid to be offered a national consultancy toward achieving the designation High Reliability Organization. By definition, reliability is the probability that a system s structure, component process or person will successfully perform the intended function. By using national experts and onsite training, the entire hospital workforce, its medical staff and volunteers will be participating in a two-year initiative that will significantly improve the health delivery system in the area of patient and employee safety, clinical quality and patient, employee and physician engagement was a year of further strengthening our commitment to expand beyond our Hunterdon roots and further develop services in Warren and Somerset Counties. We opened a Hillsborough office for Hunterdon Pediatric Associates and have increased the number of specialty offices seeing patients in our Bridgewater Medical Office. We further strengthened our range of medical services in Warren County with extended hours at Hawk Pointe in Washington. Hunterdon Healthcare also welcomed Hunterdon Family Practice and Obstetrics, Hunterdon Family Medicine at Hickory Run, Hunterdon Medical Associates at Whitehouse Station and Hunterdon Plastic Surgery to the Hunterdon Medical Group. The Hunterdon Urgent Care Centers in Flemington and Raritan celebrated their one year anniversary and continue to grow. Last year, the Flemington Urgent Care Center saw nearly 11,000 patients and Raritan treated nearly 6,000 patients. We are proud to once again boast, for the 8th year in a row, Hunterdon was listed as the healthiest county in New Jersey based on a study conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. These rankings are based on mortality and morbidity rates; behavioral factors including tobacco and alcohol use; access to hospitals; and socioeconomic factors such as income and education. This report illustrates not only our clinical outcomes, accomplishments and financial highlights, but the impact we have made on our patient s lives. To your good health, Robert P. Wise Hunterdon Healthcare System Robert Cody, MD Hunterdon Healthcare System Board of Trustees HUNTERDONHEALTHCARE.ORG 3
4 REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY Hunterdon Healthcare Celebrates 2017 Accomplishments Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center was reaccredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and received the Outstanding Achievement Award. The Cancer Center was one of a select group of sixteen accredited cancer programs to receive this national honor. The Hunterdon Wound Healing Center received the Robert A. Warriner III, M.D., Center of Excellence award and the Center of Distinction Award. This award recognizes a Center that meets the highest quality standards for achieving patient satisfaction rates over 92% and a healing rate of greater than or equal to 91%. Hunterdon Medical Center was reaccredited by The Joint Commission. Home Health and Hunterdon Hospice also had their Joint Commission Surveys and received glowing reports. Visiting Health and Supportive Services received full accreditation with distinction for the 8th year in a row from the Commission on Accreditation for Home Care. As hospitals around the world look for new and innovative ways to battle deadly pathogens and kill multi-drug resistant organisms that can cause Hospital Acquired Infections, Hunterdon Medical Center has taken a leap into the future with the installation of a Germ-Zapping Robot that destroys hard-to-kill bugs in hard-to-clean places. Hunterdon Regional Pharmacy s Meds to Beds program was created to offer patient s the convenience of getting their medications delivered to their bedside upon discharge from the hospital. Last year, 356 patients were served with this new program. As part of their Hospital Readmission Reduction Program, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) is now penalizing hospitals by withholding Medicare reimbursements to those that have a higher readmission rate than determined in Hunterdon Medical Center was the only hospital of 84 in New Jersey to not receive a penalty for two consecutive years REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY Hunterdon Healthcare wants to eliminate any barriers that might be hindering our patients from receiving effective communication and quality of care. To assist hard-of-hearing patients, hearing loops were installed in the Auditorium, Meeting Rooms A & B and at all outpatient registration desks, including the Hunterdon Medical Group practices. Hunterdon Healthcare ranked among US News and World Report s Best Regional Hospitals in the New Jersey and New York metro area. In addition, the organization received their seal of approval as a high performing hospital for the treatment of COPD, Colon Cancer Surgery and Heart Failure. Hunterdon Medical Center was bestowed the Women s Choice Award for Best Hospital for orthopedics, breast center, and for heart care. In order to better serve the needs of the community, Hunterdon Family Practice and Obstetrics located in Raritan Township with an office in the Doctor s Office, Hunterdon Family Medicine at Hickory Run in Califon, Hunterdon Medical Associates at Whitehouse Station and Hunterdon Plastic Surgery became part of Hunterdon Medical Group. Hunterdon Pediatric Associates opened a new office in Hillsborough. In 2017, Hunterdon Pediatric Associates saw 52,655 patients, managed 18,430 well visits, took care of 34,226 sick visits and administered 29,590 vaccines. The Hunterdon Urgent Care Centers located in Flemington and Raritan continued to grow with Flemington seeing 10,995 patients and Raritan seeing 5,740 patients. Hunterdon Medical Center s Laboratory introduced House Call visits. Now patients can have their blood work done in the comfort of their own home. In 2017, the lab staff made 575 house calls. The Lab also opened an outpatient facility in the Bridgewater Medical Office.
