Objectives Participants will be able to give an overview of the Vital Message Participants will be able to name three responsibilities of a Service Coordinator Participants will be able to describe a Voluntary Family Assessment Participants will be able to name five characteristics of a successful team Participants will be able to define the Primary Service Provider model
In the beginning What did you know about Service Coordination before you began? What s one thing you ve learned about Service Coordination? What s one thing you wish you didn t have to do as a Service Coordinator? What s one thing you love to do as a Service Coordinator?
Responsibilities of a Service Coordinator
A Vital Message About Alabama s Early Intervention System In 2010 Vital Message training was provided to all Early Intervention providers to ensure Early Intervention services across the state were being provided based on AEIS standards and regulations. This training was a direct charge from the Governor s Interagency Coordinating Council (ICC) to provide consistent information and technical assistance across the state.
The Vital Message To train, equip and support parents and caregivers in being the first and best teacher for their child So that they can help their child develop according to his/her individual needs and Be able to continue to help their child develop when he/she transitions from Early Intervention
The Six Core Values Family Centered Developmentally Appropriate Individualized Natural Environment Train and Equip Collaborative
Family Centered Services and supports should be aimed at helping the family support and care for their child. (More than child directed treatment ) Services should be aimed at supporting families in their role as parents and helping them by providing formal and informal services to make a developmental difference. Families needs and concerns should be continually revisited.
Developmentally Appropriate It is EI philosophy that training is offered to families with consideration for the projected developmental track of the child based on any number of factors. For example: Mother expresses concerns for her six month old who is not walking. Walking is not a developmentally appropriate milestone for a six month old. Offering mother information about developmental milestones however would be appropriate.
Individualized Family defined outcomes and the interventions to address these outcomes should be as individualized as the families we serve. No two IFSPs should look alike because the functional needs of the children and families we serve are different. Early Intervention services should be individualized to meet the needs of the child/family outcomes. Early Intervention services could change in terms of frequency and length based on the progress towards meeting outcomes.
Natural Environment Early Intervention is provided where children and families typically are: home, daycare, etc. Natural Environment, however, is more than just a place. Early Interventions must include the daily activities and routines of the family. Providing services in an artificial environment is not considered an appropriate natural environment. Example: A park is a natural environment only if going to the park is something the family typically does or wants to do. Example: Issues that are only identified in the home are not best addressed in a daycare setting.
Train and Equip Early Intervention is a family/caregiver training program. The child s development is the primary responsibility of the family. It is EI s responsibility to aid and support families in this process by: Teaching families the skills they need and emphasizing that frequent practice is needed to assure skill development and retention. Making practical suggestions and modeling strategies that fit in their everyday routines. Addressing the family defined outcomes identified during the family assessment that will address the individualized challenges of the family/caregiver.
Collaborative All family needs cannot be met by Early Intervention alone. Establishing community partnerships (informal supports) to assist with family concerns is a must. Collaborating with agencies such as CRS (i.e. clinics) to assist families in meeting their needs is part of a Service Coordinator s role if needed and a big part of how Early Intervention assists families.
How do the Core Values guide Service Coordination? Do the Vital Message and Core Values change the way you do service coordination?
Voluntary Family Assessment Why do a VFA? It s the law! Helps to build rapport Gives lots of good info on family Helps creates meaningful outcomes How do you do a VFA? What are some VFAs used in your area?
Teaming Who is on the team? Who is the team leader? How often should a team meet? What are the roles of the various team members? What qualities do you look for in team members? What are some characteristics of a successful team?
Essentials for A Successful Team A shared framework of trust Clearly defined roles and responsibilities Respectful and empathetic open communication Appreciation of diversity Equal participation among all team members
Essentials for A Successful Team Established common goals Consensus decision-making Solution-focused problem solving Ongoing evaluation Strong leadership *APTA, Section on Pediatric Fact Sheet: Team-based Service Delivery Approaches in Pediatric Practice
Managing the Team How do you deal with the nightmare called: Scheduling? What are the most effective methods for: Communicating? Who and how do you provide: Cross Training? How does the Service Coordinator evaluate: Family Satisfaction? Teaming success? Outcome achievement?
Primary Service Provider Model What does the Primary Service Provider Model look like to you? What are the benefits? What are the challenges? Who is using the PSP model? How do you decide to use PSP?
Determining Service Provider(s) Determine Service Provider(s) based on child s and family's current needs and concerns Determine amount of service based on child s and family s needs and concerns If using Primary Service Provider model, determine amount of consultation based on family needs and service provider s expertise Any Team Member can be the PSP
