QRC: 2537 Price One Day : $451 inc. GST Two Days: $561 inc. GST Date May 2016 Venue Canberra Ibis Styles Eagle Hawk 999 Federal Highway, Canberra, AT, 2602 CPD Hours 11 Hours 0 Mins Canberra Nurses' Conference 2016 Includes: New Evidence; Local Health Priorities; Improving Patient Outcomes; Preventative Health Need for Program Healthcare is undergoing major changes which are affecting the way nurses provide care. Regular appraisal of knowledge, skill and practice gaps is vital if nurses are to deliver safe and quality care consistent with their scope of practice. Changes include: A shift away from health practitioner locus of control to the patient Increasing professional accountability Emphasis on measurable, high quality and safe care Greater transparency for health care actions Personal responsibility for ongoing education to guide practice Addressing these gaps is crucial. Nurses need to be confident the practice they provide is current and reflects appropriate evidence. Access to up-to-date education is essential. Purpose of Program Attending this conference will improve your knowledge, skills and practice relating to a range of current professional and clinical practice issues. In so doing, you will be better positioned to improve patient outcomes and patient satisfaction relating to care. Learning Outcomes At the conclusion of this program it is expected that the participants will be able to: Recognise people who have health risks and implement preventative action to avoid illness Improve knowledge of specific nursing interventions that result in better patient outcomes Embrace clinical practices that encompass interprofessional knowledge to enhance patient outcomes

Deliver patient outcomes that are underpinned by evidence and evaluate their effectiveness against recognised standards Program Schedule Day One 8:30AM Registration for Day One 9:00 Professor Colin Butler The Case for Change: Health in the ACT Australians are living longer, and so are people overseas. Yet some of the underlying foundations of health, both here and globally, are eroding. This has not yet translated to a fall in Australian health indicators, but could such a decline be around the corner? In this introductory session, we will consider: Rising patient expectations, new and costly technologies, falling government funding: can these challenges be managed with equity? Adverse global environmental change, including to the climate: health issues of which nurses in the national capital should be aware Practical steps: 'think as well as treat'; help reduce personal and healthcare-related environmental footprints 9:45 Shannon Woodward Sexual Health: Is Old New Again? Our sexual health is an important part of our sense of self and managing our sexual health is important. With the emergence of sexually transmitted diseases has old become new again? In this session we consider: Taking a sexual health history Epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections and blood borne viruses in Australia Bacterial and viral sexually transmitted infections Prevention and current best practice management 10:30 Morning Tea 11:00 Rachel Longhurst Hot Bodies: The Importance of Recognising Early Sepsis Sepsis is a potentially fatal condition caused by a whole-of-body inflammatory response to severe infection. The chances of survival are significantly improved if the onset is identified early. This session demonstrates the importance of early recognition and reinforces what warning signs of sepsis you must be aware of. Includes:

Overview of the mechanism of sepsis How does sepsis cause hypotension? The diagnostic criteria for sepsis: clear triggers that attention is warranted Early aggressive treatment: what does it involve? 11:45 Cognition and Consent Patient understanding of the consent process is often sub-optimal. It is often surmised by nurses that consent has been given when care is being provided. In this session we will discuss: What are the different forms of consent? The importance of understanding consent where patients have a cognitive deficit Are health outcomes likely to be impaired if patients fail to give consent? The nursing role in the consent process 12:45PM Lunch Break 1:45 Isabel Reeves Pre-Diabetes - A Window of Opportunity? The statistics on pre-diabetes in this country are astonishing. This condition may be asymptomatic but it leads to type II diabetes if untreated. Early diagnosis is key to reducing the risk of developing full-blown diabetes. Find out the latest information about pre-diabetes including: What is it and how is it diagnosed? Who gets it? What education can a nurse provide to patients to prevent it from developing into full blown diabetes? Dietary friends and foes 2:30 Anne Blunn Transmission of Blood-borne Pathogens: Understanding the Risks For Hepatitis Despite a greater knowledge of hazards and risk management, healthcare workers continue to be exposed to blood and bodily fluids through needlestick injuries and other exposure incidents. This session includes: Transmission of Hepatitis B and C - what s the danger? Latest treatment options Nursing role in managing Hepatitis B and C/li> 3:15 Afternoon Tea 3:30

A Quartet in Nocturia Nocturia is now considered a syndrome in its own right. It can occur anywhere across the lifespan and be difficult to assess and manage. This session includes four perspectives of nocturia: A flush in the night - anatomy and physiology Root causes - what's it all about? Opting in - management and treatment options At the end of the road - outcomes for nocturia 4:15 Close of Day One of Program Day Two 9:00AM Commencement of Day Two 9:00 Effective Nursing Care - Translating Evidence into Practice This session shows how high quality research can be realistically applied to practice so as to benefit the patient. Using practical examples, this session invites you to consider: Why evidence and accountability go hand in hand How can you quickly and easily assess the quality and usefulness of available evidence? What blocks the use of evidence and how can you overcome it? An example of translating evidence into nursing practice; how it improved patient outcomes and reduced costs 9:45 Jane Kellett Preventing Malnutrition in the Elderly Malnutrition is a major health problem known to exacerbate chronic illness and increase morbidity and mortality, particularly in older people. This session looks at: Why malnutrition is so detrimental to the health of an older person The multi-system impact of malnutrition on the older person, including skin integrity, mobility and wound healing Nursing strategies to improve nutritional status 10:30 Morning Tea 11:00 Professor Reena Ghildyal Evidence-Based Update: Respiratory Viruses and Asthma Viral respiratory conditions, particularly upper-respiratory tract conditions (URTIs) remain a common cause of illness and even hospitalisation in certain populations such as older people.

Asthma is also a serious respiratory condition that can result in serious exacerbations needing evidence-based nursing management. This session will provide latest information, evidence and updates on respiratory viruses and asthma. 11:45 Lauren Lambert Beta-blockers - Getting to the Heart of the Matter Beta-adrenergic blocking agents have been available for many years, with some people having been continuously prescribed these medicines for decades. This poses a range of challenges for nurses who must stay up-to-date on these commonly prescribed medicines. This session will address the following issues: Recent changes to the guidelines for the management of hypertension Evidence regarding the efficacy of beta blockers The role of beta blockers in heart failure Contra-indications and toxicity e.g. asthma, COPD and diabetes Adverse effects of beta blockers side effects, or the disease being treated? How can a person be withdrawn from beta-blockers and what are the risks? 12:45PM Lunch Break 1:30 Pelvic Floor Muscle Dysfunction The pelvic floor is the support mechanism for the pelvic organs. What happens when this structure dysfunctions? This session discusses: Pelvic floor anatomy and physiology Pathophysiology and dysfunction Management of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction: what s hot and what s not? 2:15 Emma Awizen Power to the Patient - Advance Care Planning As the shift in healthcare continues to move towards a model where patient preferences are central to all care decisions, Advance Care Planning is a concept nurses must be familiar with. This informative session discusses: What is the role of Advance Care Plans and will this change in the future? How can an individual develop an Advance Care Plan? How are Advance Care Plans encouraged in people with chronic illness? 3:00 Afternoon Tea 3:15 Megan Layton
