3 This pack is designed to provide you will all the information you need in preparation for starting your placement at the Cobalt NHS Treatment Centre. Background The treatment centre opening in June 2005 as part of a government initave called independent sector treatment centres. Originally we were owned and run by a Swedish private healthcare company called Capio. Following Capio s selection, in June 2004, for the largest ever public sector care contract awarded by the NHS, Capio became the largest independent sector provider to the NHS in England. The Cobalt NHS Treatment Centre is a purpose built facility designed to provide day case surgery and endoscopy services to NHS patients. Outside NHS operating hours we are also able to provide private patient services. We are now currently owned and run by an Australian healthcare company called Ramsay Health. Our facilities The Treatment Centre has an outpatient department providing a suite of consulting and examination rooms together with facilities for undertaking diagnostic tests and pre operative assessments. A spacious operating theatre is equipped for undertaking a range of Day case operations under general and local anaesthetic with a second theatre equipped and dedicated to endoscopy procedures. Following a procedure patients receive close monitoring and observation in one of four recovery bays, before being transferred to a comfortable
4 discharge area (recovery 2) with reclining chairs to complete the recovery process. 5 Our services General Surgery (NHS) We offer: Hernia repair, Varicose Veins, Minor skin procedures. Endoscopy (NHS) We offer: Gastroscopy, Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy. Cosmetic Surgery (Private business) We offer: Breast Augmentation, Upper/Lower Blepharoplasty, Liposuction, Face Lifts, Pinnaplasty, Minor skin procedures. Non- surgical cosmetic procedures (Private business) We offer: Dermal fillers, Botox.
6 Other services done within the centre Aroma therapy sessions (carried out by the coping with cancer service) Important information for prospective students How to find us We are located on the cobalt business park behind the silverlink retail park in North Tyneside. We are situated close to the Northumberland park metro station and are serviced by the R19 (route 19) and Cobalt clipper buses. Alternatively you can visit the Cobalt business parks website which also has directions and further travel information. If needed a paper copy of the map is available on request from the treatment centre. Car parking facilities We have approximately car parking spaces. All car spaces are close to the entrance providing same level access. Car parking is free of charge for all staff/visitors and patients. Opening hours and shift patterns The treatment centre opening hours are as follows: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 08:00hrs 20:00hrs Wednesday and Friday 08:00hrs 18:00hrs. Saturday and Sunday Closed. Shift patterns for nursing staff vary from depending on the department you are working in.
7 Some examples are as follows: Outpatients/Day unit Early 08:00 16:30hrs Late shift 11:30 20:00hrs Other shifts 09:30 18:00hrs / 08:00-13:30hrs Theatre/Recovery 08:00 18:00hrs / 08:00 16:30hrs Lunch arrangements We have two staff lounges for use by nursing staff. Both are equipped with kettle/toaster and fridge whilst one the lounges also has the facility of a microwave. Please note we have no onsite catering facilities so you will need to bring you own lunch with you but tea and coffee is available free of charge to all staff and visitors. We do have a daily visit from a local mobile sandwich van at approx 11:30hrs, but please be aware that if you are on a later shift you would not be able to utilize this service. Dress code and Uniform policy You are expected to wear your student nurse uniform, as provided by the university, whilst on placement at the treatment centre. If you are working within the theatre/endoscopy or recovery department theatre scrubs will be provided for you to wear by the treatment centre. Please be aware that traveling to and from you placement in your uniform is not acceptable whilst you are a student at the centre. Full changing facilities are provided for both male and female students, with lockers and shower if needed. We expect all our staff including our students to be well presented in accordance with the Ramsay health policy as below: The only items of jewellery permitted to be worn on duty are wedding rings and one small pair of gold or silver stud earrings. Wristwatches must not be worn by clinical staff. All clinical staff must use a fob watch if required. Hairstyles are expected to be simple, neatly trimmed, well combed and controlled at all times. Long hair must be tied back using a discreet plain clip or hair band and tied up off the uniform collar.
8 Beards and moustaches should be kept groomed. Perfume or aftershave should not be strong or overpowering. Nails must be neatly manicured and clean. Nail varnish and nail extensions are not permitted for any clinical staff. Safety, comfort, appearance and noise factors are the main consideration for acceptable footwear. Shoes must be flat or low-heeled, black and preferably lace-up to assist with stability during manual handling. An approved style of clog with a back strap may be worn by Theatre or ITU personnel. Canvas shoes and open-toed shoes are not permitted. Trainers may only be worn by physiotherapists. Shoes should be clean, polished and well maintained Female staff are required to wear black or flesh coloured tights (stockings) at all times, or black socks if wearing trousers. Bare legs are not acceptable. Male staff are required to wear black socks. Makeup should be used in moderation. There should be no visible tattoos or facial piercing. All Ramsay Health staff are expected to keep themselves personally fresh, free from offensive odours and practice good oral hygiene. Smoking or chewing gum on Capio premises or in a Capio uniform is not permissible. N.B. A full version of this policy is available for you to review within the treatment centre. Mentorship You will be allocated a mentor and co-mentor for the duration of your placement at the treatment centre. You will be working alongside your mentor or co-mentor for the majority of your placement in order to give sufficient opportunity for your placement competencies to be achieved. However, there will be times when you may want to spend time in other areas within the centre where your mentor may not be working, in these cases you would work alongside a nominated person from that area for the day. First Day On arrival on your first day of placement please report to the treatment centre main reception. Your mentor will greet you from here and orientate you to the hospital completing your induction checklist.
