2 STARTING POINT Message from the Chief Executive Officer My Dear Fortisians, I would like to begin by saluting all of our wonderful nurses in all of our hospitals. As we do every year, we celebrated International Nurses Day across Fortis on May 12, which coincides with the birth anniversary of the legendary Florence Nightingale. The day reminds us of the great personal sacrifices that nurses have to undergo every day while discharging their professional duties. Nursing excellence is an important offering that differentiates us from other healthcare organisations. At Fortis, we have a high degree of commitment to all of our nurses and we value what they do every day. In turn, it is our responsibility to ensure that we are providing the best possible environment for them. To that end, we have taken several steps. These include making significant alterations to the Nursing Hostels so that our nurses can live in healthy and cheerful surroundings and stay positively energised. We are also investing significantly in their training and development, so that our nurses can stay abreast of the latest developments in their chosen field. Nursing is not really a profession. It is at best a calling that only a chosen few angels are allowed to practise. Nursing calls for immense compassion and commitment and it is so heart-warming to see our nurses in action at all our facilities, every day and night. On behalf of the Fortis leadership, I would like to thank each one of our nurses for their contribution in making Fortis a preferred destination for our patients. Thank you all for your hard work, perseverance and dedication to the Fortis cause of saving and enriching lives. Sharma Director, CTVS Project Update: Clinical HIS, Electronic Medical Records to enhance patient experience across the network The healthcare industry is embracing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) making healthcare delivery safer, more efficient, measurable, comparable and cost-effective. While Hospital Information Systems (HIS) are being implemented for billing and other non-clinical transactions, their application for core medical use is still limited. At Fortis, this is poised to change as we prepare to design and implement ONE FORTIS to establish the Electronic Medical Records (EMR). Inclusion of EMR and Computerised Physician Ordered Entry (CPOE) is set to change the clinical practice at Fortis by fostering Clinical Excellence, Patient Safety, efficiency, and our core value of patient centricity. Standardisation of customer experience will made possible through the enterprise-wide unique ID generation, archiving of digital health information, automation of processes, standardised data collection and seamless data flow across functions with portability of information across the network. This will reduce time spent on manual and repetitive tasks, ensure data reliability, enable timely decision making, and foster operational and clinical excellence through research and analytics. Complementary measures like introduction of barcode technology (to ensure correct patient identification for medicine administration, sample collection, etc.), seamless integration with Lab and Diagnostics, apart from smart devices, is set to transform patient and staff experience at Fortis. 01

4 CLINICAL EXCELLENCE Iraqi patient with rare genetic disorder undergoes 7-hour complex corrective surgery at Fortis Memorial, Gurgaon A team led by Dr Sanjay Gogoi, Director, Urology and Renal Transplant, Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurgaon, gave a new lease of life to a 27-year-old Iraqi woman by treating her for a rare genetic condition that causes the duplication of several internal organs. She had two urinary bladders, two urethras, two uteruses, two vaginas and two small and large intestines. One of the colons opened between the vaginas, resulting in faecal incontinence. Only 30 such cases of Caudal Duplication Syndrome, have been reported worldwide so far. The disorder results in partial or complete duplication of the spine and some other caudal structures such as urogenital and gastrointestinal tracts. The patient had previously visited several hospitals in Turkey and Germany, but was refused treatment due to high risks. Dr Sanjay Gogoi, Director, Urology and Renal Transplant, Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurgaon 7-year-old girl s hand reconstructed at Fortis Hospital, Noida, after a ghastly accident (L-R): Mr Gagan Sehgal, Zonal Director - Fortis Hospital, Noida, Dr Abhishek Sharma, Chief Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgeon - Orthopaedics and Joints Replacements, along with the 7-year-old girl and her family members A surgical team led by Dr Atul Mishra, Additional Director - Orthopaedics, and Dr Abhishek Sharma, Chief Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgeon - Orthopaedics and Joints Replacements, Fortis, Noida, performed a challenging and complex hand surgery on a 7-year-old girl from Aligarh whose left hand was severed by a fodder cutting machine. After first aid at a local hospital, the child was rushed to Fortis Hospital, Noida. The challenge for the doctors lay in reconstructing the patient s hand as it demanded the highest level of skill and expertise in re-joining the tiny arteries, veins, nerves and tendons. After struggling for almost 12 hours, the doctors were able to re-attach the nearly severed hand successfully. Two complex paediatric urology cases treated successfully in Mauritius for the first time at Fortis Clinique Darné Dr Kevin Teerovengadum, Paediatric Surgeon at Fortis Clinique Darné, performed two complex paediatric urological procedures for the first time in Mauritius. The first was on the urethra posterior valve of a 40-day-old baby weighing only 3 kgs. The condition is characterised by a congenital irregularity of the canal transferring urine from the bladder to outside the body. The doctor carried out a vesicostomy to unblock the canal. The patient spent only 2 days at the facility after the surgery and recovered rapidly. The second innovative surgery was carried out on a six-year old girl diagnosed with vesicoureteral reflux. It is an abnormality wherein urine returns to the kidneys, causing urinary infections. The complex surgery usually requires a prolonged hospital stay. However, the doctor used a minimally invasive endoscopic technique. The surgery lasted for half an hour and the patient returned home on the same day. Dr Kevin Teerovengadum, Paediatric Surgeon, Fortis Clinique Darné Infant born without nasal passages undergoes complex surgery at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi Dr K.P. Morwani, ENT Surgeon, Fortis Hospital, Vashi A baby suffering from Bilateral Congenital Choanal Atresia, a condition in which the nasal airways are blocked by tissue and bones, was successfully treated at Fortis Hiranandani Hospital, Vashi. The lack of nasal passages meant that the child could not breathe or feed as babies do not know how to breathe from the mouth for the first three months. Hence feeding meant asphyxiation. A team led by Dr K.P. Morwani, Consultant ENT Surgeon, conducted the corrective surgery. The doctors opened the nasal passages by using a one millimetre drill to remove the tissue and bones that were blocking the passages. On restoring the airways, the doctors inserted nasal stents into the baby s nostrils to keep them open to allow breathing and healing. The stents were removed three weeks later and the baby was able to breathe and feed normally. 02

9 CONVERSATION Sister Harjit Pal Bajwa has very vivid memories of joining Fortis Hospital, Mohali, on March 12, The first nurse to join Fortis Healthcare, she even handled the front desk during those early days. Having been at Fortis Mohali for over 15 years now, Sister Harjit harbours the same passion for nursing, as she did when she joined What prompted you to take up nursing as a career? Since my childhood, I felt disturbed if someone was unwell. When I was in Class X, I used to visit a hospital in the neighbourhood and observed the nurses taking care of patients. My parents used to scold me, but I was so enamoured by the nursing profession, that I decided to follow my dream. You are the first nurse to have joined Fortis. What keeps you here? Fortis feels like home I have all the facilities here. The seniors are appreciative and colleagues are cooperative. Even today, if somebody was to offer me a better pay, I would not leave Fortis. What personal and professional challenges do nurses face in discharging their duties? Being a nurse means long hours, night shifts and sometimes even double duties. This does mean that your personal life can take a hit. I have been lucky as my husband is very supportive. My son, who was born at Fortis Mohali, is 14 now. When he was an infant, my husband used to bring him to the hospital during my night shifts so that I could feed him. Professionally, we deal with all kinds of patients; some are abusive and agitated. It can be tough managing the attendants too, especially when the patient is not doing well. What inspires you and keeps you going? Whenever a patient goes back happy and healthy and the care has been exemplary, I go back home with a smile on my face. We get so many good wishes and prayers from the families of patients; some stay in touch with us years after their hospital stay. All of this makes me feel special as a nurse. Any message you would like to share with fellow nurses across Fortis? Give the best care you can give. Be committed, disciplined and respectful of seniors and never think of any task to be below your dignity. Sister Harjit with the Regional Head of Nursing, Capt Neelam Deshwal Sister Harjit with her family 07

10 A LITTLE EXTRA CARE Nurse Deepti Surve of Fortis S.L. Raheja sets a golden example by saving three lives, even after her death Sister Deepti Surve of Fortis S.L. Raheja Hospital, who provided selfless care for over two decades, continued to do so even after she was declared brain dead. The nurse had suffered a stroke and was admitted to the ICU. Unfortunately, in spite of the best care, she could not be revived and was declared brain dead. Her family consented to donate her heart, liver and both kidneys. While the kidneys and liver were transplanted in three waitlisted patients, the heart was declared unfit for retrieval. Three city hospitals, five transplant coordinators and more than seven surgeons in Mumbai worked tirelessly to retrieve, transport and transplant the donated organs. The liver and kidneys from the 44 year old nurse were transplanted in deserving patients across three city hospitals. Dr Ratnadeep Chaskar, Zonal Director, Fortis S. L. Raheja Hospital, said, We feel humbled and extremely proud of her as she continued to save and enrich lives, even after death. She has set an example for us all to follow. As he had a very comprehensive health history, he brought along all his medical papers, when it was time for his first check up with a new doctor. After browsing through the extensive medical history, the doctor stared at Ramesh for a few moments and said, Well, you sure look better in person than you do on paper! "Doctor doctor, I only have sixty seconds to live..." "Can you wait there for a minute please!" Lady: Doctor, my husband just swallowed an Aspirin by mistake. What shall I do? Doctor: "Give him a headache now. Why waste the medicine?" Ashok: Why did you run away from the operation table?? Ramesh: The nurse was repeatedly saying -"don't get nervous," "don't be afraid, "be strong, This is a small operation only." Ashok: So what was wrong in that? Why are you so afraid? Ramesh: She was talking to the surgeon 11 Source:
