Independent self-study learner will have a basic understanding of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) Course Goal: Course Objective: Independent self-study learner will demonstrate a basic awareness of Borderline Personality Disorder as evidenced by reading I Hate You, Don t Leave Me: Understanding the Borderline Personality by Jerold Kreisman and Hal Straus (2010) and passing an online written exam based on the book with a score of at least 70% or better within a one-year timeframe.

This time includes: reading the full book, contemplation of the book, and completing the online quiz. This course is designed to help you (the independent learner) to have a better understanding of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Recreational therapists and allied professionals who provide services in behavioral health may find themselves working with individuals who have a personality disorder, including, Borderline Personality Disorder. Please note, that the paperback version of this book was published in The authors make references to the American Psychiatric Association s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Review (DSM-IV-TR). The updated version, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) is currently in use. The course developer (Danny Pettry) recommends that recreational therapists and allied professionals to see out professional colleagues who have advanced training and practice providing services for people with BPD. This course does not have a focus on assessments or implementing interventions for people with BPD. It is important to note that Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) created by Marshal Linehan with a focus on helping treat people with BPD. 4 Danny Pettry s Independent Education Program Page 4 of 5 Danny Pettry has worked as a mental health practitioner at residential treatment center for children and adolescents with various mental health needs in West Virginia since Pettry has a Master of Education degree in Mental Health Counseling from Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia, Kentucky (2012), a Master of Science degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Indiana University, Bloomington, Indianan (2006), and a Bachelor of Science degree from Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia (2002). Pettry is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in West Virginia. His credentials include: National Certified Counselor (NCC) and Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). Pettry is a good-standing member of the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) since He won the Peg Connolly Scholarship to the 2004 national conference in Kansas City. He was awarded an advocate of the year in 2005 by ATRA for outstanding efforts with the Recreational Therapy Medicare Project. He served on the Peg Connolly scholarship committee in 2007 and Pettry is also an active member of the West Virginia Therapeutic Recreation Association (WVTRA) branch of ATRA.
