Khan, M.D. Public Health Measures in Nebraska Nebraska Successes: Nebraska 10 th in health Increases in high school graduation rates and child immunizations, Decreases in child poverty Nebraska Challenges: 20% consumed four or more (women) or five or more (men) alcoholic beverages on at least one occasion in the past month (44 th ) High incidence of infectious disease, including whooping cough and certain types of food poisoning and sexually transmitted infections. Obesity rates, with 29.6 percent of the adult population having a body mass index of 30.0 or higher (normal is 18.5 to 22). The most disturbing of these measures is that Nebraska is ranked 46th in health equity only four states have more disparities in health among their populations.

17 Dr. Khan Public Health Prescription for Nebraska Reduce Nebraska s cancer deaths (and heart disease) by increasing the cigarette tax by at least $1. Our current excise tax on cigarettes of 64 cents per pack is lower than 74 percent of other states. Increase health care coverage in Nebraska so nobody falls through the gap of our Medicaid programs and federal health exchanges (Medicaid Expansion) Embrace more innovative public health strategies and invest in public health research and prevention (Health Enterprise Zones; Social Impact Bonds; Prevention Funds)

24 Rural Health Systems and Professional Incentive Act Results: 107 rural incentive recipients practicing under obligation in Nebraska The Nebraska Loan Repayment Program has 92% success rate of recipients completing their obligations The Nebraska Rural Health Student Loan Program buyout rate dropped from 50% in 1998 to 17%. Impacts care to approximately 800,000 people Remaining Needs: Comprehensive plan for recruitment and retention Integrated rural health system that includes critical access hospitals, primary care, and behavioral health Tele-health and electronic health records that integrate care Interdisciplinary training primary & behavioral health (Nebraska Rural Health Advisory Commission s Annual Report, 2014)
