3 An Overview of the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program The ADN program at DSLCC consists of five semesters (67 semester credit hours) of fulltime study. Students who successfully complete the program earn an Associate of Applied Science Nursing Degree. They are then eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. DSLCC s ADN Program is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing, which may be reached at (804) or 9960 Mayland Dr., Suite 300, Henrico, VA 23233, and is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. 4 Essential Functional Abilities The National Council of State Boards of Nursing, Inc. has determined the following categories of functional abilities are essential for licensure and job performance of a member of the nursing profession. A brief description and examples of representative activities/attributes are included. CATEGORY Gross Motor Skills Fine Motor Skills Physical Endurance Physical Strength Mobility Hearing Visual Tactile Smell Reading Arithmetic DESCRIPTION Gross motor skills sufficient to provide the full range of safe and effective nursing care activities, such as moving within confined spaces, reaching above shoulders, reaching below waist, standing, and maintaining balance Fine motor skills sufficient to perform psychomotor skills, such as grasping small objects with hands, keying/typing, pinching, picking, twisting, and squeezing with fingers Physical stamina sufficient to perform client care activities for entire length of work role such as standing during surgical or therapeutic procedure, or performing CPR Physical strength sufficient to perform a full range of motion and client activities such as pulling and pushing 25 pounds, supporting and lifting up to 25 pounds, moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds and squeezing with hands to operate Physical abilities sufficient to move from place to place in a quick manner and to maneuver by twisting, squatting, climbing, and walking Auditory ability sufficient for physical monitoring and assessment of client health needs, which includes hearing faint body sounds, faint voices, hearing situations when not able to see lips, and hearing auditory alarms Visual ability sufficient for accurate observation and performance of nursing care, which includes seeing objects up to 20 inches away and 20 feet away, depth perception, peripheral vision, and ability to distinguish color and color intensity Tactile ability sufficient for physical monitoring and assessment of health care needs which include feeling vibrations, detecting temperature and feeling differences in surface characteristics, sizes, and shapes Olfactory ability sufficient to detect significant environmental and client odors Reading ability sufficient to comprehend the written word at a minimum of 10th grade level Arithmetic ability sufficient to do computations at a minimum of an 8th grade level which includes reading and understanding columns of writing, reading graphic printouts and digital displays, calibrating equipment, Information Packet Revised May

7 Criteria for Nursing Curriculum All Nursing courses must be taken in the order and semester listed. All general education courses within the Nursing curriculum must be taken in or before the semester listed. Students must earn a grade of C or better in all Nursing, Biology, English, and Psychology courses. Biology courses should include an in-person, on-campus lab virtual labs may not transfer. Course Time Limits Readmitting Nursing Students: Due to the rapid changes in health care, any nursing student who withdraws from the nursing program and later applies for readmission must repeat courses with the NSG prefix if the course is more than 2.5 years old at the time of readmission. This applies to DSLCC Nursing Students only if not a DSLCC Nursing Student, see the policy that applies to Admission Requirements for Transfer Nursing Students in the Nursing Program Handbook. Readmission date is the start date of the semester in which the student would resume their nursing coursework. Credit by exam may be attempted in these courses. All Nursing Students: BIO 141 Human Anatomy & Physiology I and/or BIO 142 Human Anatomy & Physiology II must be repeated or seek credit-by-exam, if more than 7 years old. 8 Admission Requirements for the ADN Program 1. Graduation from high school or GED Students must have either graduated from high school or have completed their GED or have a Home School Transcript of Completion. High school seniors may apply for admission to the program and may be admitted pending their graduation. An advanced degree of Associate s or higher may be considered in lieu of high school graduation. 2. High School Course Students must complete the following course with a C or better: High School Course Chemistry DSLCC Equivalent NAS 05 Sciences I 3. Transcripts Official transcripts from high school and from colleges attended should be submitted to: Nursing Office Dabney S. Lancaster Community College 1000 Dabney Drive Clifton Forge, VA Admission to College Students must be admitted to DSLCC before being considered for admission to the nursing program ADMISSION TO THE COLLEGE DOES NOT GUARANTEE ADMISSION TO THE NURSING PROGRAM 5. Academic Placement Test Scores Students will need to take the placement test in Math to determine if remedial work is required. Remedial work must be completed before being considered for admission into the Nursing Program PLACEMENT TEST REQUIRED SCORE Virginia Placement Test (VPT) - Math ** Must pass Units 1-5 Information Packet Revised May

9 The VPT Math Placement test may be waived if student has met any of the following standards: MATH PLACEMENT MEASURES H. S. GPA OR SCORE RANGE H. S. GPA and Alegbra II ** 3.0 or higher SAT Mathematics Score ** (or higher) ACT Mathematics Score ** (or higher) GED Math ** 165 or above ** High School GPA (H. S. GPA) is valid for five (5) years after the date of high school graduation. SAT, ACT, and GED Test scores are valid for five (5) years after the date of the test. Virginia Placement Test (VPT) Math scores are valid for five (5) years afther the date of the test. Previously taken developmental courses will be valid for five (5) years after the term taken. 6. Grade Point Average (GPA) Nursing candidates must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 before being considered for admission to the Nursing Program. Curricular GPA will be determined by grades received for prerequisite coursework as well as any other courses taken to meet the requirements of the Associate s Degree in Nursing. 7. Nursing Entrance Test (ATI TEAS Test of Essential Academic Skills [ATI TEAS]) Beginning September 1, 2016, DSLCC will be using the 6 th Edition of the ATI TEAS Test (simply called the ATI TEAS). We will no longer accept scores from the ATI TEAS Test Version V. Nursing Test (ATI TEAS) Calendar Year May 1 to April 30 (ATI TEAS test must be taken by April 30) Nursing candidates may take TEAS test as many as 3 times during May 1 to April 30 for a FALL admission: for example o For Fall 2018: students have from May 1, 2017 April 30, 2018 o For Fall 2019: students have from May 1, 2018 April 30, 2019 Contact Nursing Office ( ) for ATI TEAS test registration information. Cost of registration and test are $66.00 each time test is taken. Optional study manuals are available at an additional cost (as of May 2016 cost is approximately $50.00) DSLCC Tutoring Center offers TEAS Test Preparation. Students wishing to participate should complete Math and English placement testing first. Students should then make an appointment to meet with the Nursing Program Head, Tina Hawley, to complete a request form for TEAS Prep Tutoring. Student will then take the request form to the DSLCC Library to make an appointment for an individual tutoring session. Information Packet Revised May

Admission Ranking Nursing candidates must achieve a National Percentile Rank of 45 or greater in each of the following ATI TEAS test categories: o Reading o Mathematics o Science o English and Grammar Usage A National Percentile Rank of 45 corresponds to the following Individual Adjusted Score for each of the ATI TEAS test categories: ATI TEAS Category National Percentile Rank Individual Adjusted Score Reading % Mathematics % Science % English & Grammar Usage % If the minimum National Percentile Rank (45) is not obtained in one or more categories, subsequent test scores (maximum of 3 tests) may be used to replace sub-standard scores. Nursing candidates are ranked for admission based on 1. Overall National Percentile Rank Average (This is a composite score obtained by averaging together the highest score achieved in each of the four categories Reading, Mathematics, Science, and English and Grammar Usage) 2. A 45 or greater must have been obtained in each ATI TEAS test category, as emphasized above. 3. For Nursing candidates with equal ATI TEAS overall test scores, highest curricular GPA will then be used. 9. Nursing Application Form Forms are available within the Nursing Office or online on the DSLCC website. (Selects Programs of Study from the QuickLinks dropdown menu, then select Nursing (ADN) Applications will be accepted beginning January for Fall admission. Deadline for submission is May 15 th. (All application materials/transcripts/etc. must be received by this date). 10. Information Session with Nursing Program Head You will be contacted by the Nursing Department to schedule an interview only if additional information is needed. Accepted applicants will be required to attend an orientation session. Failure to attend the orientation will result in forfeiture of your position in the program. Information Packet Revised May

11 11. Notification Policy Nursing candidates will be notified via formal letter regarding admission status by June 1 st. Those offered admission to the Nursing program MUST complete the following for final acceptance: 1. Health Form with the following requirements: Up-to-date immunizations: o Tdap (Tetanus booster) o MMR o Varicella o Hepatitis B (strongly recommend, but may decline) o Flu vaccine (during season) Two-step tuberculin skin test (TST) Physical exams---to be determined NOTE: Additional costs may be incurred depending on individual immunization requirements. 1. Drug Screen and Background Check These screenings MUST be obtained through CastleBranch, Inc. o Information is available in the Nursing Office or call o Costs for these screenings are the responsibility of those offered admission and are approximately $ o Deadline for these screenings is August 10. Screenings may have to be repeated based on clinical settings contractual agreements. Failure to submit and/or pass the drug test will result in denial of admission to and/or dismissal from the Associate s Degree in Nursing Program. 2. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) All Allied Health Programs at DSLCC require CPR for Health Care Providers certification Deadline for submitting an up-to-date CPR card to the Nursing Office is August Students must obtain and submit an official copy of their DMV Driving Record to the Nursing Department by August Students should have Medical Insurance coverage. 12 5. Submit written confirmation to the Nursing Department of their acceptance of admission and intention to enter the Nursing Program 6. Attend the mandatory orientation session. Failure to attend the orientation will result in forfeiture of the student s position in the program. NOTE: After having completed all of the Nursing Program requirements, please be aware that final licensure determination resides with the Virginia Board of Nursing under the following stipulations: Code of Virginia # : The Nursing Board shall have the power to deny... (a nursing license)... upon proof that the person: a. Is guilty of fraud or deceit in procuring or attempting to procure a license; b. Is guilty of a felony or of a crime involving moral turpitude; c. Is unfit or incompetent by reason of negligence, habits or other causes; d.
