1 ORANGEBURG-CALHOUN TECHNICAL COLLEGE PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN PROGRAM ADMISSION CHECKLIST All Documents Listed Below Must Be Submitted Prior To Admission and Registration Complete OCtech Admissions Application Submit OFFICIAL high school/ged transcript Submit all OFFICIAL college transcripts (all college transcripts must be complete and current) cannot be faxed or, if hand delivered, must be in original sealed envelope. (If current official transcripts are already on file for all institutions listed, you do not have to resubmit). Meet minimum admission testing requirements (required if appropriate transfer credit isn t given) Copy of CNA License; if applicable Copy of Phlebotomy/ECG License; if applicable 1
2 Patient Care Technician Program (PCT) Admission Requirements 1. Applicants must be a high school graduate (certificate of completion does not qualify) or possess a GED. 2. Applicants must submit all official and completed documents to the Admissions Office that must include the following: Application for PCT Program Official high school transcript indicating proof of graduation or GED transcript Official transcripts from ALL colleges attended. All college transcripts must be complete and current.* Meet minimum admission testing requirements 3. Applicants must be permanent residents or U.S. citizens for at least one year prior to the date of application. *Qualified applicants who attended college outside of the United States and who meet citizenship requirements must provide an official translation transcript(s) from World Education Service. Fees for English translation of international transcripts must be paid by the applicant. (See Registrar for details.) Misrepresentation of information on any required forms or a willful attempt to misrepresent residency will make an applicant ineligible for admission to the PCT Curriculum. Program Criteria 1. Students who already possess a current SC CNA license may skip the CNA portion of the curriculum and move directly into Phlebotomy/ECG. Students will be required to present a copy (for review only) of their CNA license to their advisor at the time of advisement and registration. Students must also complete the Request for Experiential Learning Form, and submit to the Program Coordinator for approval. 2. Students must submit immunization records, background checks, and PPD results to their instructors. This applies to CNA and Phlebotomy/ECG. 3. Students will begin wearing uniforms during the third week of class for CNA. Students are required to purchase the following: White scrub tops, White scrub pants, White rubber-soled shoes. (Students may wear sneakers, as long as they are completely white). 4. In order for students to take the Certified PCT Assistant State Board Exam, the NACES fee will be collected with tuition and other fees, prior to the start of classes. Any student who drops, or withdraws from a CNA course section must notify Stefanie Gadson-Brown, Director, at A national background check and/or drug test will be required upon acceptance to the program and before starting class in the fall. Positive results on background check and/or drug test may prohibit participation in clinical experiences and may necessitate removal from the program. Clinical sites may require additional background and drug testing during the course of a student s enrollment. Background checks can be obtained at at a cost of $25. Please contact Stephanie Gadson-Brown at if you need assistance with your online background check. AN ARREST RECORD LISTED ON A BACKGROUND CHECK MAY PROHIBIT YOUR PARTICIPATION IN THE PCT PROGRAM. It is the responsibility of the student to notify the Program Coordinator or Dean of any criminal charges, convictions, orders, and/or sanctions that occur during the course of his/her enrollment. Failure to notify the Program Coordinator or Dean may necessitate removal from the program and revocation of eligibility to take the State Board Examination for Licensure or the National Certification Exam. Note: Prior criminal convictions may affect eligibility to take the State Board Examination for Licensure. Applicants seeking admission to the PCT program must meet admission requirements as outlined in this handout. Qualified applications are reviewed on a rolling admissions basis. Qualified applications will be accepted throughout the year until the classes are filled. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply early. 2
3 ORANGEBURG-CALHOUN TECHNICAL COLLEGE PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN PROGRAM ADMISSION PROCEDURES APPLICANTS SHOULD BE AWARE THAT, BEFORE STARTING THE PROGRAM, ALL PCT STUDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO MEET THE FOLLOWING TECHNICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED FOR THIS OCCUPATION. Core Performance Standards for the Classroom and Clinical Environment Requirements Critical thinking Professional Relationships Communication Mobility Motor skills Hearing Examples 1) Identification of cause/effect relationships in clinical situations 2) Use of the scientific method in the development of patient care plans 3) Evaluation of the effectiveness of PCT interventions 4) Make decisions based on the PCT process 1) Establishment of rapport with patients/clients and colleagues 2) Capacity to engage in successful conflict resolution 3) Peer accountability 1) Explanation of treatment procedures; initiation of health teaching 2) Documentation and interpretation of PCT actions and patient/client responses 3) Correctly read aloud written instructions 4) Ability to follow oral and written instructions 1) Movement about patient's room, work spaces and treatment areas 2) Administration of rescue procedures-cardiopulmonary resuscitation 3) Lift 20 pounds from the floor, carry and place on a surface 36 inches in height 4) Stand from a seated position, and walk 300 feet without any impairment 5) Lift and support patient from a bed, stretcher, or wheelchair safely 6) Go from a standing position to a squatting position and vice versa. Walk up and down several flights of stairs and pivot 7) Extend legs forward and backward to provide patient support as needed 8) Move a patient from a bed, stretcher, or wheelchair safely 9) Push a stretcher with a patient without assistance 10) Transport a patient in a wheelchair, bed, or stretcher with oxygen or IV fluids 1) Calibration and use of equipment, operation of computers, telephones, call lights, etc. 2) Therapeutic positioning of patients 3) Put on and remove proper clothing and equipment correctly without assistance (i.e. surgery suit, shoe covers, or other protective devices, etc.) 4) Demonstrate fine motor skills in manipulating small objects 1) Ability to hear monitoring device alarm and other emergency signals 3
4 2) Ability to discern auscultatory sounds and cries for help Visual Tactile Sense Self-Care 1) Ability to observe patient's condition and responses to treatments 2) Ability to see monitoring device alarm and other emergency signals Ability to palpate in physical examinations and various therapeutic interventions Ex: Distinguish smells which are contributory to assessing and/or maintaining patient s health status, e.g. smell fire, wound drainage Implement universal precautions; follow established procedures for body hygiene Temperament/Awareness 1) Perform procedures on patients in pain from trauma, disease, or under the influence of drugs/alcohol. Maintain professional composure under stress 2) Be aware of the potential exposure to pathogens through bodily secretions, mucous, and blood Any student who cannot perform one of the listed technical standards should contact the Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities. Admitted students who are not able to perform all Core Performance Standards will have the admission offer rescinded. 5 PCT Program FAQ If you have additional questions, please call Stefanie Gadson Brown at Can a student enter PCT if they have been charged with a felony? Felony charges may prohibit candidates from entering clinical facilities. Once a student has been accepted into the program by a counselor, they must submit a copy of their SLED check to their instructor during the first class meeting. Once submitted, background checks will be taken to clinical facilities for approval. If any student is denied access to a clinical facility, that student will be dismissed from the program. Failing to submit a SLED background check, may result in dismissal from the program. 2. What documentation does a student need for CNA? 2 Step PPD (Tuberculosis Skin Test) Deadlines for TB Skin Testing will be set by instructors. TB Testing can be performed at a variety of local providers. Students will receive specific information regarding this requirement during the first class meeting. Do not attempt to get this testing prior to the start of the semester. All information should be placed on a Health Form, with documentation attached. SLED Background Check A copy must be submitted during the first class meeting. Background checks from other agencies will not be accepted. Seasonal Flu vaccine Flu vaccines may be required, depending on the semester. Students will be notified by their instructor if they will need to bring proof of vaccination. 3. What documentation does a student need for Phlebotomy/ECG? A Completed Health Form Health forms must include positive titers or adult immunizations of Varicella, Rubella, Rubeola, and Hepatitis B, Tetanus immunization within the last ten years, Complete Blood Count (CBC) and PPD results within the past year. Any immunization performed prior to the student s 18 th birthday will not be accepted. Failing to submit health documentation may result in withdrawal from all clinical courses. Seasonal Flu vaccine Flu vaccines may be required, depending on the semester. Students will be notified by their instructor if they will need to bring proof of vaccination. SLED Background Check Background checks within the past year will be accepted. CPR and First Aid Cards Students will receive CPR and First Aid certification during AHS 106. Cards must be presented during the first class meeting. 4. Are PCT students eligible for financial aid? Yes, the PCT program is eligible for financial aid. Students should annually apply for financial aid by submitting the FAFSA. 5
