2 Foreword I am delighted to present the February 2018 to July 2018 prospectus which outlines the educational programmes offered by the Centre of Nursing and Midwifery Education (),. This Diary of Learning Events has been developed based on service needs which you identified through the training needs analysis which was completed in November and December last year. We were delighted to welcome some of you to our Networking Seminar on November 20th 2017 in UHG. The development of the Mission Statement which is on page 3 was a collaborative piece of work between service and the team. The feedback on the statement has been very positive. The educational programmes offered within this diary of learning events are designed to equip nurses and midwives with the skills, competence, knowledge and attributes to enable them to deliver care that is evidence based, person centred and of the highest quality. This is in accordance with the requirements of Part 11 of the Nurse and Midwives Act (2011).All educational programmes facilitated by the have Category 1 approval or approval pending with Continuing Education Credits (CEU's) allocated by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). Programmes are available to all HSE staff and are delivered in the in (UHG), (PUH), St. Brigids Education Centre in and other locations as necessary. A number of programmes identified within this diary of learning events are also video linked from and to the in Castlebar and Donegal. There may be additional programmes scheduled within the duration of this current diary. In such cases these educational programmes are advertised via flyer to relevant stakeholders four to six weeks prior to programme delivery. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Board of Management, Directors of Nursing/Midwifery, the Clinical Experts and the team for their continuing support and contribution in the development and delivery of the educational programmes. 3 Application Process for Educational Learning Events in the 2017 Identify a programme you wish to attend and discuss it with your line manager. Line management approval required for attendance at all programmes. Line management approval does not guarantee a programme place. The does not grant or pay for study leave or travel expenses. Please discuss leave and expenses with your line manager at local level. Priority for all education programmes will be given to employees of the Health Service Executive (HSE) and Voluntary Services. Submit a completed Learning Event Application Form (see Appendix 1) to Ms. Carmel Brannigan, Clerical Officer,, UHG, for all applications and to Ms. Caroline Rocke, Assistant Staff Officer, Education Centre, PUH for all Portiuncula applications, at least 10 days prior to the date of the learning event. Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) PIN and HSE Personnel numbers are mandatory on all application forms. Incomplete application forms will be returned to the applicant. It is essential that you provide your contact address and mobile phone number on all application forms All applicants for learning events have a place on programmes unless informed otherwise by. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, it may be necessary to cancel programmes. All applicants will be notified by phone or . Please check your messages prior to the course date. A waiting list is not maintained for programmes. All educational programmes facilitated by the have Category 1 approval or approval pending with Continuing Education Credits (CEU's) allocated by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI). Please ensure you are available to attend identified programme in its totality, a certificate of attendance will only be issued on completion of programme. There is no fee attached to attending education events outlined in this schedule. Some programmes maybe video linked with other s. Parking is not available at the. Participants are requested to park in UHG public car park, parking cost is 2 per hour to a maximum of 9 per day OR participants can park at MPUH and get the shuttle bus over to UHG free of charge. Participants are requested to park in PUH public car park. Parking cost is 2 per hour to a maximum of 8 per day. Parking pay stations are located at the car park and the main hospital foyer. 2

12 Anaphylaxis Training for Healthcare Providers GUH Aim: To provide information on the safe and effective management of an anaphylactic reaction and to ensure these patients are promptly treated and managed after the onset of symptoms of anaphylaxis. Pre requisite: Participants must present evidence of having completed a Basic Life Support (BLS) Programme for health care providers within the past two years. Learning Outcomes: The programme will provide an opportunity for participants to: Be able to differentiate between severe allergic reaction and anaphylaxis Be familiar with different drug doses for infant, children & adults Be proficient in preparing & drawing up the appropriate drugs Be familiar with current RCPI National Immunisation Guidelines for the management of Anaphylaxis Be aware of the existence of Pre- Hospital Emergency Care Council (PHECC) guidelines for the management of Anaphylaxis Demonstrate skills in the management of Baby/child/Adult Allergic/Anaphylactic reactions Target Audience: All registered nurses/midwives in clinical practice in primary care settings/acute hospital setting who require this training. 14 Back to Basics Infection Prevention and Control Aim: To provide registered nurses and midwives with up to date knowledge, skills and evidence based practices in relation to infection prevention and control. Learning Outcomes: The programme will provide an opportunity for participants to: Understand the concept of the chain on infection and how the transmission of infection can be broken by breaking any one element of the chain Identify why separation of clean and dirty is a key principle to prevent contamination of clean areas/surfaces/ equipment Be proficient in demonstrating safe decontamination of reusable non-invasive equipment Critically discuss scientific evidence base supporting the effectiveness of hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene and Personal Protective equipment in preventing infection Describe waste management regulations & safe disposal of sharps. Demonstrate what is aseptic technique & aseptic Technique non-touch (ANTT). Understand the benefits and consequences of effective antimicrobials for population health and patient safety. Target Audience: All registered Nurses/Midwives in clinical practice in primary care settings/acute hospital setting who require this training. 15 Best Practice in Recording and Report Writing for Midwives Aim: The aim of this one day intensive training is to equip midwives with the necessary knowledge and skills to create clinical records, statements and reports that adhere to best practice standards and that will stand up to legal scrutiny. Learning Outcomes: The programme will provide an opportunity for participants to: Understand the importance of good record keeping Understand the function of their records Understand the components of good record keeping Understand how records are used as evidence in legal proceedings Understand how to create a report with the assistance of their records Look at appropriate layout, format and style for their reports Be able to identify the issues and the facts, and the source and weight of those facts Develop an objective and critical eye in relation to their report writing. 16 Breast Feeding & Lactation Management 2 Day Programme Aim: To facilitate participants to acquire evidence based knowledge and the skills necessary to protect, promote and support breastfeeding in hospital and community settings. Learning Outcomes: The programme will provide an opportunity for participants to: Use communication skills to talk with pregnant women, mothers and co-workers Practice the Ten Steps to successful breastfeeding and abide by the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk substitutes. Understand the value of breast milk Know the facts - Breastfeeding and lactation Put knowledge into action getting it right step-by-step Understand special difficulties experienced in breastfeeding for mother/baby Identify and solve breastfeeding problems counselling skills Develop practices which support breastfeeding in hospitals and community. 17 Breastfeeding Refresher Course for Midwives- UHG Aim: To provide effective quality education on lactation management to those involved in the care of mother/infant dyads (midwives, nurses, PHN s). 53 SAOR : Screening & Brief Interventions for Alcohol Use Aim: A brief intervention for alcohol use is a short, helpful conversation that focuses on assessing, and if necessary, assists a person to consider and alter their alcohol consumption. Brief interventions have shown to be effective in initiating change in alcohol consumption for people with mild to moderate alcohol-related problems and in helping people with more significant difficulties to access specialised alcohol treatment services. The SAOR Model has been adopted by the HSE as the model-of-choice for delivering brief interventions for alcohol use.
