2 St. Francis tops the charts when it comes to volunteers Volunteering puts your life into perspective; I guess that s why I do it. Stephanie Forbes St. Francis' volunteer stats for 2012: Volunteer hours totaled 3, employees recorded at least one hour of volunteer time. $5,900 was earned in Dollars for Doers rewards. 27 percent of employees participated in charitable Walks, Runs & Rides. on the cover: Adam Jandro, supervisor of Materials Management & Environmental Services, volunteers at the Celebrate Me Camp near Mankato. The camp offers weeklong summer sessions for kids entering seventh grade. Above: "These Vietnamese women are grandmothers, and with the help of a translator, they shared some of their feelings about that honor," said Sher Stiles, who volunteers with surgical teams in developing countries. Employees at St. Francis Regional Medical Center and its surrounding campus understand how important it is to give back to the community. They are passionate, caring people who demonstrate the hospital s strong commitment to helping our community members live healthier lives. At St. Francis, two-thirds of our employees are active volunteers. Here are just a few of them. Supporting preteens Adam Jandro, supervisor of the hospital s Materials Management & Environmental Services department, spends the equivalent of more than an hour a day (392 hours last year alone) volunteering. His favorite cause is the Celebrate Me Camp near Mankato, which offers weeklong summer camp sessions for boys and girls entering seventh grade. The camp s programs focus on spirituality and building self-esteem. 2 partners in health

3 LEFT: While performing screenings at a government-run elder care center in Vietnam, Stiles enjoyed time spent smiling and communicating, without words, with a 105-year-old Vietnamese woman. BELOW: Jandro visits with campers at Celebrate Me Camp, which focuses on spirituality and building self-esteem. "I was a camper there in It really changed my life," he said. I was a camper there in It really changed my life, so I ve been involved for the past 15 years, Jandro said. I can t give a lot of money, but it is part of my Catholic faith to give something. The camp has a special place in my heart. I ve gained lifelong friends there. Volunteering medical care Sher Stiles, RN, is a flying squad nurse at St. Francis, which means she assists with patient care in various nursing units and is often the first to respond to urgent changes in a patient s condition. Stiles uses her vacation time to travel to developing countries. There, she works with volunteer surgical teams that perform heart surgery on children, deliver donated medical supplies, and mentor and train local doctors and nurses. Stiles explained, I ve volunteered forever, often in educational programs. I have always been called to service. I feel grateful and privileged to live where I live and for the education I ve had, and I want to share those things. When you participate in something like a CardioStart trip, you are a changed person, she added. When I was in Uganda last year, every day at least one baby died in my arms from things that are treatable. They had only one ventilator, and there were 10 babies in respiratory failure. Sometimes all you could do was share a smile or hold someone s hand. Here in the United States, we take a lot of things for granted. Despite being quite ill from dengue fever after her trip to Uganda, Stiles plans to work as a medical volunteer this year in Mexico, Ghana and Peru. 4 continued from Page 3 volunteer activities sponsored by both St. Francis and Park Nicollet s Corporate Volunteer Council. She is co-founder of the Warm Hugs for Kool Kids program, which provides handmade quilts for sick children. Mutziger s husband died from cancer, and some of her volunteer activities focus on finding a cure. I think I get my love of volunteering from my mother, who ran a café in Letcher, S.D., Mutziger said. Her doors were always open to anyone in the community. It s so rewarding to volunteer at St. Francis because everyone remembers to say thank you. The people are just outstanding. 'They make it so easy to get involved' Stephanie Forbes, a St. Francis nuclear medicine technologist, gives her time to a wide variety of hospital-sponsored volunteer programs: Loaves and Fishes, Feed My Starving Children, Lions Club blood glucose screening events and Free Bikes 4 Kidz. The culture here is that you hear about volunteer activities from the day you start, and they make it so easy to get involved, Forbes said. I always wanted to try building something, so Habitat for Humanity was wonderful. And I have always loved bikes and want people to have that opportunity, so I got involved with Free Bikes 4 Kidz. Volunteering puts your life into perspective; I guess that s why I do it. Matching, tracking and rewarding volunteers Jandro, Stiles, Mutziger and Forbes are passionate, caring people. They demonstrate why so many St. Francis employees volunteer and track their hours. The St. Francis volunteer participation rate of 63 percent is the highest among Allina Health hospitals and clinics. This is how we bring our mission to life, said Tamara Severtson, manager of St. Francis Mission Integration and Community Engagement. At St. Francis, we have a particularly strong focus on living our values. In 2011, Allina Health started its Mission Matters program, which forges a stronger relationship between the organization s mission and employee volunteers that includes tracking and measuring the time they contribute. The program offers resources and rewards to employees who share their time and talents with their community. The Mission Matters program is a nice way to count, reward and recognize what we are doing, added Severtson. Through a partnership with VolunteerMatch.org, Allina Health provides an easy way for employees to connect with volunteer opportunities they feel passionate about. There are two components of Mission Matters: Dollars for Doers and Walks, Runs & Rides. Making involvement easy Looking to donate your time and talents to your community? Or is your organization looking for volunteers? Visit VolunteerMatch.org to get started. This 4-year-old boy was in severe congestive heart failure and would likely have died without the open-heart surgery Stiles and her group provided. The team had the pleasure of seeing him run and play with a ball for the first time in his life before leaving for home. The stuffed animals pictured were among the many donations from fellow St. Francis employees. With Dollars for Doers, for every 20 hours of volunteer time (up to 60 hours per year), Allina Health makes a $100 contribution to the eligible nonprofit organization of the employee s choice. Across Allina Health, volunteer participation has increased since we started Mission Matters and Dollars for Doers, said Samantha Lucas, program coordinator of Allina Health Community Benefit and Engagement. Building community Lucas noted that St. Francis has many team volunteer activities to get even more people involved. Those programs include the Hope for the City mission, Loaves and Fishes, Feed My Starving Children, Habitat for Humanity, international scrubs donations and many more. St. Francis employee engagement compares favorably nationwide, Severtson said, and the hospital s leaders are also active, visible volunteers. When people are that involved, they want to be at work and they re highly engaged in everything they do, she said. We re always asking employees how we can attract other people like them. We know we re building community. Habitat for Humanity is just one of several volunteer activities in which St. Francis employee Stephanie Forbes has participated. 4 partners in health

5 Integrative therapies relieve pain and anxiety, aid healing During a hospital stay, you can benefit from advanced medical treatments and the highest level of professional care. But even with the best care, you might experience pain and anxiety that make it hard to rest and heal. St. Francis Regional Medical Center now offers integrative therapies massage therapy, acupuncture, aromatherapy, guided imagery and more to hospital patients. These techniques have been shown to reduce pain and nausea, relieve anxiety, improve sleep, enhance healing and even shorten your hospital stay. The nurses assess patient needs and suggest integrative therapies that may offer comfort, said Kathy Mason, RN, patient care supervisor and co-lead of the Integrative Therapy Program. The nurses are seeing the benefits to patients, Mason said. They re more relaxed and have less anxiety and pain. And when nurses are providing the therapy, they say they feel more grounded and are better able to care for patients. St. Francis Integrative Therapy Program, a partnership with the Penny George Institute for Health and Healing, teaches nurses how to use integrative therapy to help patients with healing and recovery Initially, in 2011, St. Francis nurses began participating in the Penny George Institute s nationally known Transformative Nurse Training program. Classes of 18 to 20 nurses focus on stress and relaxation, massage, guided imagery and simple acupressure techniques. The training is also offered to nurses from St. Gertrude s Health & Rehabilitation Center, which provides long-term care. St. Francis inpatient Integrative Therapy Program is similar to what s offered at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Thanks to funding from the Saints Healthcare Foundation, there is no cost to patients. St. Francis also envisions a future outpatient integrative therapy clinic on the hospital campus. Plans include having a doctor and nutritionist on staff, plus group classes and resilience training. We are excited to make all this available to our patients, Mason said. The integrative health approach is proven to help with healing and recovery. It also promises to be a powerful way to support overall health and prevent illness without additional medicines or invasive procedures. What patients and nurses say Comments from St. Francis patients and their nurses show how well the hospital s new Integrative Therapy Program is being received: Patient cried tears of joy when she realized we can offer her massage and aromatherapy. Aromatherapy appears to have helped the patient more than the medicines she has taken today. Please encourage healing touch the nurses who did this helped immensely. 6 What your provider wants you to know If your doctor could tell you one thing that could influence your health, what would it be? Read on for advice from our experts. Mike Beckman Rehabilitative services and sports medicine St. Francis Rehabilitative Services Lynda Schaumburg Clinical dietitian St. Francis Regional Medical Center partners in health Pay attention to nutrition facts Here are some label-reading tips to start First, look at serving size how much are you eating? All the information on the label applies to the nutrients for one serving. Next, for a hearthealthy diet, a good range of fat intake is 50 to 75 grams of total fat per day. Limit saturated fat to 15 grams per day. Increasing dietary fiber to 25 to 35 grams daily has been shown to decrease the risk of colon cancer. Challenge yourself to limit sodium to less than 2,400 milligrams per day. Nutrition facts will help you make healthful choices in don't ignore the pain Forget the mantra no pain, no gain. It fosters the dangerous practice of performing through pain. All you ll gain when you ignore pain is greater susceptibility to injury, as well as the potential to increase the severity of the injury the pain is trying to warn you about. If an injury causes you to limp or have weakness, see a doctor right away. This is especially true for individuals who are very active and who are athletes. Generally, soft tissues and joints need one to two weeks for repair. If pain lasts more than two weeks and you ve been using self-care techniques, it s time to get an expert involved. Michelle L. Johnson, MD Family medicine Quello Clinic and Travel Clinic Savage How to cope with traveler s diarrhea People can get traveler s diarrhea when they visit places where the water is not clean or the food is not handled safely. If you re traveling and get diarrhea, here are some tips to help you feel better. Drink eight to 10 glasses of clear fluids every day. Water or an oral rehydration solution is best. Smart strategies for dining out By Michelle Doepke, registered dietitian Many people have enjoyed Chinese cuisine at Dragon Café (576 Marschall Road, Shakopee) since it opened its doors more than 20 years ago. This cuisine offers our palate a harmony of flavor and spice at a relatively inexpensive price. Making some wise choices can turn these often dangerously deep-fried and sodium-packed dishes into better-balanced meals filled with protein and nutrient-rich veggies. Below are some tips and tricks to help you say goodbye to General Tso and hello to Kung Po. Most Chinese dishes are made with large amounts of oil to prevent sticking and can often top 1,000 calories for just one entree. Ask whether your entree can be steamed instead of sauteed or fried, which can save you hundreds of calories and unnecessary fat. Try the Shrimp Broccoli, Shrimp Peapods, Shrimp with Vegetables or Scallops with Vegetables, and ask for it steamed. Chicken or tofu options offer all the protein with a much lower fat content. Request that they not be breaded or fried. The Harvest Chicken, Moo Goo Gai Pan and Kung Po Chicken entrees are all healthier options, providing the punch of flavor without the pile of calories. Skip or split the fried rice, which can pack a minimum of 400 calories. Use chopsticks instead of a fork, which will slow you down as well as allow you to pick up less sauce and oil. Learn to split an entree with your dining companion, which will quickly cut those calories in half. Strip the sauces. Soy sauce is high in sodium, and sweet sauces are high in carbohydrates. Avoid these altogether or ask for them on the side. Request a to-go container before your food is delivered and take half home. Chinese cuisine usually keeps well, and you ll be able to divide up the calories between two meals instead of just one. Finally, order some steamed vegetables to have on the side or add to your dish without adding many calories. While Chinese food is unarguably delicious, it can be a nutritional disaster. The trick, and benefit, is all in how and what you order. So enjoy this local favorite, and be inspired to make some better choices next time you visit. 8 The biggest news in town : St. Francis Health Services in Jordan opens to community There s a demand for good medical services and a pharmacy where people can get care right here locally. Mike Shaw, Jordan s mayor It s what Jordan and its surrounding communities have been waiting for: a clinic they can call their own. Jordan, a growing city of 9,000 residents, had been without primary care and pharmacy services for a number of years. All that changed on April 2, with the opening of a new family medical clinic, St. Francis Health Services in Jordan. The full-service clinic, operated by St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee, joins Keaveny Drug, a new pharmacy that s part of a small Minnesota family-owned chain. Both are in the new building on Creek Lane South. The clinic and pharmacy will serve a number of additional communities in the southwestern portion of St. Francis service area, including Belle Plaine, Carver, Henderson, Le Center, Le Sueur, Montgomery and New Prague. Sandy Morris, MD, and Janette Sorensen, nurse practitioner, are your local health care providers in the Jordan area. All the care families need St. Francis Health Services in Jordan, part of Allina Health, will be open initially from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is designed to provide all the care families need, from babies to seniors, close to home. Services and features include X-ray services, a full medical lab and an electronic medical record system allowing for seamless transition of health information, as well as the pharmacy with drive-through service located right next door. Sandy Morris, MD, is the Jordan clinic s family physician. She previously was at Allina Medical Clinic Crossroads Dean Lakes in Shakopee, which also is affiliated with St. Francis Regional Medical Center. Morris has been practicing for 16 years and has been part of Allina Medical Clinic Crossroads for seven years. 8 partners in health

9 Pharmacy St. Francis Health Services in Jordan 265 Creek Lane South Jordan, MN Open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The people who live close to the Jordan clinic are ecstatic, Morris said. I expect we will be pretty busy right away, which is kind of unusual when you re opening a new clinic. I m really excited to be starting this new venture and to be back in the area. Morris lives just 12 miles from the new clinic, in New Prague. She has a strong obstetrics/gynecology and pediatrics focus in her practice and expects to be seeing many moms and babies at the Jordan clinic. Janette Sorensen, nurse practitioner, joins Dr. Morris and the rest of her team to round out the staff at the Jordan clinic. Sorensen also lives close by as a resident of Prior Lake. Real assets to our city Deb Keaveny, owner of Keaveny Drug, said Jordan city officials sought her company out during their search for an independent pharmacy for the site. Jordan is the right size to support a well-run independent pharmacy, she said. We plan to work closely with the clinic and mirror their hours as much as possible. Keaveny Drug, established in Minneapolis in 1933, is a family-owned company that has been dedicated to small-town independent pharmacies for more than 75 years. In addition to Jordan, it operates pharmacies in Cokato, Annandale, Winsted and Clara City. Later this year, Brentwood, a three-story independent living complex for people ages 55 and older, will open right next door. Underground parking will be provided for residents, and Jordan s library will relocate from downtown to the ground level of the senior housing complex. The clinic and pharmacy are real assets to our city, said Mike Shaw, Jordan s mayor. After many years with no clinic, it was very good news when we learned that St. Francis was going to build this facility. After construction started, the excitement continued to grow. There s such a demand for good medical services and a pharmacy where people can get their care and medicines right here locally. Everything on that site will be great both for young families and our older residents who don t drive anymore. It s the biggest news in town. 10 Navigating through the change Menopause Center of Minnesota now offers appointments in Shakopee For women who struggle with hot flashes, sleep problems and other symptoms of menopause or perimenopause, help is now available close to home. The St. Paul-based Menopause Center of Minnesota now offers appointments in Shakopee with Diane Feller, nurse-midwife, and Becky Mendoza, nurse practitioner, on Tuesdays from noon to 4 p.m. The location is Suite 250 of the 1515 Medical Office Building on the St. Francis Regional Medical Center campus. Before and during menopause, levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone hormones drop. This is what causes troublesome symptoms. The Menopause Center provides guidance for women considering treatment with bioidentical hormones, which are exact replicas of hormones produced by the human body. They are often made from plants. Hormones are regulators, so not replacing them is like taking the gas and oil out of a car and expecting it to keep running. Our culture expects us to just put up with it, said Sandy Greenquist, nurse-midwife, founder of the Menopause Center. Every perimenopausal woman is different. At the Menopause Center, we take extra time to create individualized treatment for midlife women. Every new Menopause Center patient starts with an hour-long appointment with an experienced staff member to explore health history and symptoms. Diagnosis and treatment can include hormone-level testing, bioidentical hormone prescriptions, supplements, complementary care, and nutrition and exercise advice. Insurance coverage varies, so Greenquist said she and her staff strive to keep prices low and follow-up appointments to a minimum. Kris Scott, RN, patient care supervisor of St. Francis Family Birth Place, is a Menopause Center patient. Going through menopause made me irritable. I didn t sleep well most nights, struggled trying to lose weight and had a lot of hot flashes, Scott said. I prefer bioidentical hormones, and I tried some bioidentical progesterone cream. It helped, but the real improvement happened when I went to the Menopause Center in St. Paul and switched to a bioidentical estrogen patch and oral progesterone. Recognizing menopause Menopause usually takes place between ages 45 and 55, when a woman s body stops producing estrogen and progesterone, ending menstruation. While this transition is a natural event, the change can cause a variety of symptoms, including: trouble sleeping night sweats hot flashes mood swings leakage of urine less interest in sex vaginal dryness and pain during intercourse. Scott, 60, is continuing treatment with the Menopause Center in Shakopee, which is close to her home and work. She enjoys the increase in her energy level and looks forward to finally seeing results from her weight-loss efforts. Struggling with symptoms? Find out how the Menopause Center can help you at menopausemn.com. 11 Reflecting on the past, collaborating for the future Saints Healthcare Foundation celebrates four years of philanthropic support 8 New board members who will advance the mission of the Saints Healthcare Foundation (L to R): Alan Spillers, executive director of Saints Healthcare Foundation; Marianne Kanning, MD; Elise Ney; State Rep. Mike Beard, Foundation chairman; Anthony Spagnolo, MD; and Richard Roy. In the 1980s, following rapid growth in the region, planning and groundwork for a new health care campus began. Local leaders saw the need for excellent, comprehensive health care close to home. In 1996, the new St. Francis campus opened its doors to the residents of Scott, Carver, Dakota and Hennepin counties. The Franciscan and Benedictine founders, St. Francis Regional Medical Center and St. Gertrude s Health & Rehabilitation Center have remained committed to high-quality, respectful and compassionate care for all. Community leaders play a key role Marianne Kanning, MD, moved to Shakopee in 1975 to start her family medicine career with Chaska Medical Center, now Allina Medical Clinic Crossroads Chaska. At the time, she was one of just three female doctors in the community. St. Francis was the hospital of choice, said Kanning. All the physicians on the medical staff had an opportunity to participate in the future and direction of the hospital. Kanning took that opportunity by serving as chief-of-staff during that time of expansion. It has been a long process with a lot of community support for the campus, said Kanning. Philanthropy is extremely important, and it becomes even more important with tightening health care reimbursements. In 2013, Kanning is continuing her commitment to excellent health care by joining the Saints Healthcare Foundation. Deep roots, new promises In 2008, the St. Francis and St. Gertrude s foundations combined to form the Saints Healthcare Foundation. This philanthropic Get involved organization was created to support St. Gertrude s Health & Rehabilitation Center and St. Francis Regional Medical Center. Thousands of donors and volunteers have worked to ensure excellent health care for the area. Because of this, the Saints Healthcare Foundation has been instrumental in supporting the St. Francis Cancer Center, the expansion of St. Gertrude s, St. Francis patient care coordination and charity care for those in need. In addition, grants from generous donors have supported new technologies to improve patient care, expand programs and services, enhance the healing environment, enrich support services and promote community health and wellness. 12 After anterior hip replacement, Diane Kelly enjoys a game of bean bag toss with her grandson, Ryan. Just 10 days after surgery, she no longer needed a walker or cane. A new approach to hip replacement Less pain, faster recovery In 2007, Diane Kelly of Richfield had her left hip replaced and needed to take a month off work to recover. It was six months before the active grandmother felt like herself again and could resume her normal lifestyle. Two years ago, Kelly started having similar arthritis pain in her right hip. Her surgeon, Owen O Neill, MD, of Twin Cities Orthopedics Shakopee, gave her cortisone shots. She kept up favorite activities like aerobics and spending time at the family s seasonal camper site near Brainerd. Still, her right hip slowly worsened. A smaller incision from the front Meanwhile, O Neill had started using a new anterior approach to hip replacement, with great results. Traditional hip replacement procedures performed from the side or back require that muscles be cut. The anterior approach involves a smaller incision in the front of the hip, meaning that muscles can simply be moved during the surgery. Dr. O Neill said I was a good candidate for the anterior surgery, and St. Francis Regional Medical Center had the special surgical table that s required, Kelly said. On Nov. 5, 2012, O Neill used the anterior technique at St. Francis and gave Kelly, 70, a new right hip. I was in the hospital for two days and went home with no restrictions, Kelly said. There was much less pain than the first time. My scar is five inches long half as long as the other one. As soon as she came home from the hospital, Kelly could get in and out of bed without help. In 10 days, she no longer needed a walker or cane. She faithfully did physical therapy exercises, all at home. astounding results O Neill, one of just a few Twin Cities surgeons currently using the anterior approach, traveled to 10 different locations to master the procedure. It is now the only technique he uses. It s more difficult than standard techniques. But the results are astounding, he said. There is more accurate placement of parts because you use real-time imaging and can also check during the procedure to make sure the leg lengths are exactly equal. Recovery from anterior approach hip replacement takes about eight weeks, said O Neill. Patients are able to go straight home, avoiding the eight to 12 weeks of movement restriction that are common with standard hip replacement surgery. Considering surgery?
