7 Speaker Biographies David Clements, MPA Vice-President, Knowledge Exchange Canadian Health Services Research Foundation Phone Web x221 SPEAKERS David Clements has been a key part of the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation s knowledge exchange program since He leads a team responsible for implementing innovative programs that help healthcare managers and policymakers find and use research in their work, as well as disseminating research results. Mr. Clements has a Master s degree in the areas of health policy and public administration, and an undergraduate degree in communications. In addition to his work with national health research agencies, he has held a number of senior communications positions, including as an advisor to staff at the British Columbia Ministry of Health.
8 Cate Creede, MA, PhD SPEAKERS Organizational Practitioner The Potential Group Phone Web Cate is an organizational change and collaborative communications consultant. Her current projects are mainly in the complex network of Toronto area teaching hospitals, working to create more effective interprofessional collaboration. Other clients range from global companies to small grassroots not-for-profit agencies. Cate views her core role as creating meaningful conversations, creating new ways of talking about and framing a group s work that can inspire the entire community. Specific activities range from one-on-one coaching to full system summits. All of her work starts with identifying the strengths within any organization or system and using those to create new possibilities to generate sustainable change. Cate practice is integrated with her academic work. She completed her PhD in Human and Organizational Systems in 2008, and is now working on several research projects. Her other passion is for her work with orphaned and vulnerable children in western Uganda. Cate works mainly in Toronto, but has a growing practice in Seattle and Vancouver. 6
9 Joseph Gebran, MPH, BComm Director of Corporate Services Canadian Patient Safety Institute Phone Web or (toll-free) Cindy Steinkampf SPEAKERS Joseph Gebran has been involved in health care organizations for 20 years. He has a passion for patient safety and quality improvement, and brings a rich understanding of establishing and managing organizations and technologies in health care including new ventures and initiatives such as the Institute of Health Economics, the implementation of Total Quality Management at the University of Alberta Hospitals, and the integration of Telehealth into clinical programs at Capital Health. He works effectively and collaboratively with research and decision maker stakeholder groups. He enjoys rewarding experiences in establishing and managing Corporate Services and research funding processes, and developing partnerships between health care sectors and jurisdictions. Joe is also responsible for corporate wide services for CPSI, including legal and information technology, research grant processes and corporate planning. 7
10 John H. V. Gilbert, PhD, FCAHS SPEAKERS Project Lead Phone Web Dr. John Gilbert is Principal & Professor Emeritus, College of Health Disciplines, UBC. His many honors include a Fulbright Scholarship; a David Ross Research Fellowship; a Medical Research Council Post- Doctoral Scholarship; the Outstanding Alumnus Award of the School of Liberal Arts, Purdue University; a Killam Outstanding Teaching Award and The Distinguished Service Award of the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Dr. Gilbert is Past President, International Association for Interprofessional Education and Practice, and Faculty Advisor, National Health Sciences Student s Association. He serves on Health Canada s Health Education Task Force. He is a member of the Boards of the Michener Institute, Toronto, the BC Health Education Foundation, and the Women s Health Research Institute of B.C. He is Project Lead, the, funded by Health Canada. He serves as Co-Chair of the WHO Study Group on Interprofessional Education & Practice. Dr. Gilbert is a consultant in health education policy. 8
11 Liz Harrison, DPT, BPT, MSc, PhD Associate Dean Physical Therapy and Interprofessional Health Sciences Education Phone Web SPEAKERS Liz Harrison is Professor and Associate Dean at the University of Saskatchewan in the School of Physical Therapy, College of Medicine. Her career has spanned the clinical, academic, and research worlds. She received her physical therapy degrees and post-graduate qualifications from 1976 to 1983; her MSc in 1983, and PhD in Areas of interest include musculo-skeletal health, health care interventions and outcomes, health promotion initiatives in chronic disease, and interprofessional collaboration. Her specialist qualification as a Sports Physical Therapist, has also allowed her to work with athletes from grassroots to elite levels for more than 25 years. Liz has worked with interdisciplinary research teams involving partnerships with various community organizations, government agencies, and health authorities. She was Chair of the Health Services Utilization and Research Commission ( ) and inaugural Chair of the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation ( ). Since 2005 she has worked collaboratively with provincial, national, and international colleagues in advancing best practices for interprofessional and client/patient centred practice, and has been a member of the Steering Committee since its inception in 2006.
12 Rita karakas SPEAKERS Senior Advisor Office of Development, Centennial College Phone Web x Rita Karakas has more than 20 years of global experience in both the government and non-government sector. An expert in international development and humanitarian service delivery, Ms. Karakas is the former CEO of Save the Children Canada ( ), and has worked extensively with global organizations such as the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies, the Australian Government s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Council, Oxfam International, the federation of Oxfam Affiliates. She has demonstrated her ability to bring about continual and recognizable transformation at the United Way/Centraide Canada, YWCA of/du Canada, TVOntario, and Oxfam Great Britain. Ms. Karakas has senior level experience in programme and policy design with specialisation in human-rights based programming, including extensive experience in international development and humanitarian service delivery, change management, performance management and innovation systems, learning and development (primarily focused on adult learning). She has specialist professional expertise in the development of performance management systems which promote accountable, effective and collaborative cultures in complex organizations. 10
13 Sandra MAcDonald -Rencz, RN, MED, CHE Executive Director Office of Nursing Policy, Health Canada Phone Web SPEAKERS In her role as executive director, Sandra MacDonald-Rencz participates on a variety of national and international committees such as the International Council of Nurses, the Nursing Sector Study and Health Human Resources Strategy Coordinating Committees and other major working groups concerned with health services, systems knowledge and policy development in order to provide advice and support to the policy work of Health Canada. Sandra has a degree in nursing, a graduate degree in education and is a Certified Health Executive with the Canadian College of Health Service Executives (CCHSE). She has held senior positions with CCHSE, CNA, and the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation, and was co-chair of the National Initiative for Telehealth Guidelines (NIFTE). She has also authored several publications on quality and health system evaluation. 11
14 Jennifer Murdoch, RN, MHSc SPEAKERS Manager Health Human Resources Department of Health, Nova Scotia Phone Web Jennifer Murdoch is the Manager of Health Human Resources (HHR) in the Department of Health for the Province of Nova Scotia. Jennifer is also a Registered Nurse and trained midwife. In her role she has helped to position the Department to adopt a strategic, population health needs-based methodology for planning with a focus on education and training, supply and productivity, research, infrastructure and recruitment and retention. Jennifer is the Co-Chair of the Atlantic Advisory Committee for the Health Human Resources (AACHHR) that reports to the four Deputy Ministers of Health and four Deputy Ministers of Education in the Atlantic Region. The overall goal of AACHHR is to enhance intraregional cooperation on issues relating to health human resources. Recognizing her own desire for ongoing professional development, Jennifer embarked on a PhD at Dalhousie University in the Interdisciplinary PhD program in health human resources strategies with an emphasis on system policy and planning using competency based care and interdisciplinary health care teams. 12
15 Jason Nickerson, BHSc, RRT, M A(c) President National Health Sciences Students Association Phone jwnicker@interchange.ubc.ca Web Jason Nickerson is the current president of the National Health Sciences Students Association (NaHSSA), and is a Master s student at the University of British Columbia where he is completing a study to examine the transition from education to practice for students completing a program in interprofessional education. Jason is also an Affiliate Student with the Western Regional Training Centre for Health Services Research. Jason completed his undergraduate training at Dalhousie University, earning a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree in respiratory therapy as well as a specialization in anesthesia and is a current clinician with St. Paul s Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia. Mr. Nickerson has also served as a medical volunteer with the Ghana Health Service, working in anesthesia at the Cape Coast Regional Hospital in Cape Coast, Ghana. As the current president of the NaHSSA, Jason holds positions with the and the Accreditation of Interprofessional Health Education project of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada. 16 Lynn Ste venson, RN, PHd, fcchse SPEAKERS Vice President, People, Organizational Development, Practice and Chief Nurse Executive, Vancouver Island Health Authority Phone Karen Nash Web Dr. R. Lynn Stevenson, RN, PhD, is Vice-President People, Organizational Development, Practice and Chief Nurse Executive for the Vancouver Island Health Authority. Prior to this appointment she held executive positions in Fraser Health, the British Columbia Cancer Agency and the former Capital Health Region. Lynn holds a PhD in nursing with a focus on organizational change, leadership and practice. She is a Fellow of the Canadian College of Health Service Executives; an EXTRA Fellow and holds Adjunct Professor positions in the Schools of Nursing at the Universities of British Columbia and Victoria. Lynn is involved in many research initiatives, most recently as a core team member on the Canadian Patient Safety Institute research related to safety in community care which builds on her fellowship research. In 2008 she received the National Nursing Leadership Award from the Canadian College of Health Service Executives. 14

25 Canadian Network of National Associations of Regulators Louise Sweatman, Chair DESCRIPTION Mission/Goal The Canadian Network of National Associations of Regulators (CNNAR) is the federation of national organizations whose provincial and territorial members are identified in legislation as responsible for protection of the public through the self-regulation of professions and occupations. MANDATE CNNAR supports the self-regulation of professions and occupations. This support may be achieved through: 1. facilitating collaboration at the national level amongst members, with federal government, federal agencies, and with other national and international groups, 2. increasing the understanding of the Canadian public, governments and others, of the benefits of self-regulation to Canadians, 3. monitoring and responding to appropriate federal legislation and policies, 4. serving as an information clearinghouse on common issues, and 5. developing and sharing resources PRE-WORK Priority Issues CNNAR is an interprofessional network of national organizations.
