2 9:10 10:30 a.m. IMPLEMENTING A PERFORMANCE-BASED BUDGET PROCESS SFU has moved partially to a budget allocation process in which dollars are allocated according to performance. (For example, VP Advancement's budget is dependent on fund-raising results). On the academic side of the institution, "dollars follow scholars", so that the enrollment management process drives the budgets of the faculties. This session will focus on the development and management of the process. 10:30 10:45 a.m. BREAK Bill Krane Associate Vice President, Academic Martin Pochurko Associate Vice President, Finance 10:45 12:00 p.m. ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION: PERFORMANCE-BASED BUDGETS Following questions/comments on the previous session, invited panelists will present the experience of their institutions and a moderated discussion will focus on the following issues: (a) the role of PBB in alignment of resources and strategic priorities; (b) whether PBB should be applied across an institution or only to specific units; (c) the extent to which universities are moving towards PBB; (d) what are the prerequisites for successful PPB development? Moderator: Jon Driver Vice-President, Academic and Provost Discussant: Peter Ricketts Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Carleton University 12:00 1:00 p.m. NETWORKING LUNCH 1:00 2:30 p.m. REVITALIZING TEACHING AND LEARNING This session will consider recent critiques of the undergraduate experience across the North American post-secondary system and attempts to renew strategic focus on undergraduate education and the development of innovative teaching approaches. 2

3 Following the implementation of general education requirements in all undergraduate programs in the mid-2000's, a task force examined the support for teaching and learning at SFU. This resulted in a substantial set of proposals that are currently being implemented. Significantly, attention has shifted away from technological "fixes" to the need to create a pervasive culture of teaching and learning across the institution. 2:30 2:45 p.m. BREAK Bill Krane Associate Vice President, Academic Stephanie Chu Director, Teaching and Learning Centre 2:45 4:00 p.m. DIALOGUE AS A PEDAGOGICAL TOOL In the early 2000's SFU opened the Wosk Centre for Dialogue at its Vancouver campus. The physical facility prompted a faculty member to develop the "semester in dialogue" concept, in which about 20 students spend a semester working on a theme from a multi-disciplinary perspective, and become deeply engaged with the community. During this session, participants will be guided in a dialogue on experiential learning at universities as an organizational paradigm. Remarks at this dinner event will compare and contrast the establishment and evolution of two campuses (Vancouver and Surrey) and their relationship to the Burnaby campus. Particular attention will focus on the role of the two campuses in community engagement activities. 3

5 11:00 12:30 p.m. WORKING WITH A PRIVATE COLLEGE PARTNER SFU has the longest running agreement with a private partner (Fraser International College) to prepare international students for university work. This session will review the history of the relationship, the evolution of programs, the integration into the BC post-secondary system, and success rates of students. It would also review the management of concerns re privatization of public education and quality control. Perspectives from other universities will enrich the discussion.
