When open in 2008, St. John Providence Park Hospital will feature 200 private patient rooms with full baths, state-of-the-art surgical suites and advanced imaging technology. The 470,000-square-foot facility will offer innovative technologies such as Electronic Medical Records (EMR) which make it possible for physicians and nurses to access vital patient information right at the patient s bedside. This state-of-the-art hospital will be a model for new hospitals across the country making St. John Providence Park a nationally recognized home for advanced thinking, treatment and practices. Flexible rooms to save lives, add convenience Detroit Free Press February 6, 2006 CARE THAT REVOLVES AROUND THE PATIENT Providence Park Hospital in Novi will feature acuity adaptable patient rooms (see page 5) that adjust to the severity of an illness or injury eliminating the need to transfer patients throughout the hospital. Bringing care and medical services to the patient enhances patient satisfaction, safety and recovery.

4 MEDICAL EXCELLENCE IN BOTH EDUCATION AND RESEARCH St. John Providence Park Hospital in Novi will be a teaching hospital, establishing its own Medical Education and Patient Care Research Programs. Physicians in the hospital s 400-member medical staff all boardcertifi ed or board-eligible practitioners will instruct and assist medical students, residents and fellows in their clinical training. Medical specialties in the Medical Education program will initially include surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, family practice, internal medicine and emergency/trauma care. Additional specialties will be added as the program matures. St. John Providence Park Hospital s Patient Care Research Program will focus on three major areas of medical research: Clinical trials research with a special emphasis on oncology and cardiology; Basic biomedical research focusing on histology, molecular genetics and cell biology; Medical training using computerized simulators, anatomical models and virtual learning laboratories. St. John Providence Park Hospital in Novi will feature eight new surgical suites. 2

5 ST. JOHN PROVIDENCE PARK HOSPITAL WILL FEATURE SOME OF SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN S MOST ADVANCED HEALTHCARE RESOURCES. EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT CANCER CARE The Emergency Department designed to be a Level 1 Trauma Center will have 45 individual treatment rooms and a 12-bed Clinical Decision Unit to accommodate 60,000 visits a year. PEDIATRICS The hospital will feature a 10-bed pediatric unit and dedicated pediatric emergency service in a highly secured area near the Emergency Department. IMAGING SERVICES The Providence Park campus will include state-of-the-art imaging technologies such as advanced MRI, CT, PET, mammography and ultrasound services. CARDIOVASCULAR CARE The hospital s Cardiovascular Center of Excellence will provide advanced heart and vascular care, including minimally invasive cardiac catheterization services and a comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation program. Innovative therapies and advanced technology at the hospital s Assarian Cancer Center a joint effort between St. John Providence Park Hospital and the University of Michigan Health System are the reasons Providence Park is considered a leading resource in cancer treatment. NEUROSCIENCES St. John Providence Park Hospital in Novi will feature a Neurosciences Center of Excellence to include such specialties as: neurology, neurosurgery, The Craniofacial Institute for Reconstructive Surgery, and The Michigan Ear Institute. Sophisticated procedures such as cochlear implant surgery and endoscopic skull base surgery will be performed by the Center s world-renowned physicians and clinical staff. WOMEN S AND INFANT HEALTH The entire third fl oor of St. John Providence Park Hospital has been set aside to provide the most comprehensive health care services for women and newborns. The area will include a Family Birthing Center with 27 Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Post- Partum rooms with sleeping areas for spouses and families; a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Gynecology unit; and ante-partum and observation rooms. 3

6 BUILDING THE HOSPITAL OF THE FUTURE, TODAY St. John Providence Park Hospital represents a new concept in healthcare. We re combining the best features from hospitals across the country and integrating them into one remarkable facility, says Rob Casalou, St. John Providence Park Hospital president. The goal is to create a health destination of serene and healing environments designed from the ground up to provide the latest in patient care as well as convenience, privacy and comfort for patients and family members. A HEALING ENVIRONMENT, INSIDE AND OUT The hospital of the future draws on purposeful design to encourage and enhance the healing process. As soon as you arrive on campus, you will sense an atmosphere of serenity a positive environment with open, comfortable surroundings. Large expanses of windows will make the hospital appear to be transparent, with wood-like highlights blending in with groves of trees and natural vegetation on the property. The natural appearance of the exterior will extend into the building. An impressive glass-walled six-story atrium will envelop patients and visitors with brightness and light. Patient rooms will have large windows for panoramic views of the campus wetlands, forests and natural green space. The goal is to make St. John Providence Park Hospital more than a hospital it s designed as a destination for health and wellness. I made the decision to participate in the campaign because I m committed to Providence and St. John Health meeting the needs of the community. Clearly, with the growth of the Novi area, it s necessary to have a hospital in this area... We need to provide the kind of care that patients need and also the kind of support systems that physicians need things like advanced technology and nursing support. We want to create an institution that s designed to support the team concept of care that we re developing here at Providence. 7 The concept is acuity adaptable where services revolve around the patient and the patient remains in the same room, as they improve and become well. WHAT IS ACUITY ADAPTABLE? Studies show every time a patient switches rooms during a hospital stay, an opportunity for error arises everything from patient falls and medication errors to incorrect menus and unfamiliar staff. But at St. John Providence Park Hospital in Novi, a new standard in health care is being adopted in which the care giver comes to the patient. The concept is acuity adaptable where services revolve around the patient and the patient remains in the same room, no matter the acuity of their condition. Seventy-fi ve percent of the patient rooms at the Novi Hospital will be designed and equipped to be acuity adaptable the exceptions being in areas like women s health/birthing center, and the super ICU. This is a radical departure from traditional inpatient care, where a patient may be transferred to different rooms multiple times, depending on the severity of their illness or injury. The acuity adaptable rooms are larger than traditional patient rooms and are equipped with a higher level of medical technology and equipment. The nursing staff is also trained to care for patients with different diagnoses and severity of illness. St. John Providence Park Hospital in Novi will be a leader in offering the acuity adaptable patient care model, which will allow patients the added convenience of remaining in one room, cared for by the same team of specially trained staff, throughout their hospital stay. 5

8 MORE THAN A HOSPITAL In addition to a state-of-the-art hospital, the Providence Park campus will feature: An outdoor trail and fi tness path A 65,000-square-foot ambulatory surgery center, specializing in orthopedics A 200,000-square-foot medical offi ce building which will house the Neurosciences Center of Excellence and the Surgical and Procedural Skills Education Center (west campus) Community education and conference facilities (south campus) An extended stay hotel for family (west campus) Health-oriented retail businesses (west campus) Dr. Shukri David (right), chairman and Dr. Gary Assarian, vice chairman of The Campaign for St. John Providence Park Hospital Physician Committee, review a building model of the new hospital. 9 A DESTINATION FOR HEALTH The opportunity to design and build a new hospital on 200 beautiful acres in Novi doesn t come along very often. That s why we are being so careful to integrate the hospital with the land that surrounds it. The St.John Providence Park campus will feature numerous natural and man-made water features and ponds, forested areas and woodlands, manicured gardens and courtyards, as well as a 15-acre Greensward an expanse of open green space just west of the hospital. Over 500 new trees will be planted throughout the campus and an additional three-acre wetland will be developed to provide habitat for water fowl and wildlife. The goal is to create an atmosphere of calm and tranquility the minute you arrive on campus. The hospital is needed in the community and I just feel it s such a worthwhile cause. I choose where I donate very carefully... I give where I think my money will do the most good. I really believe the community will benefit from the presence of Providence in the area. 10 SERVING THE COMMUNITY Service to the community, particularly the poor and vulnerable among us, remains central to the mission of Ascension Health, St. John Health and St. John Providence Park Hospital- Novi. Nationally, Ascension Health provided $600 million in uncompensated care in 2004, of which nearly $30 million was provided by Providence Hospital including $3 million from Providence Park in Novi. In addition to accessible quality healthcare services for area residents, St. John Providence Park Hospital will continue to expand its community health outreach. Prevention, encouraging healthy lifestyles and helping individuals cope with illness, is the focus of St. John Community Health s community education and wellness activities. Outreach activities improve health status through health fairs and partnerships with community coalitions and organizations to promote health education and wellness. In my opinion, it just goes without saying that having a world-class research and healthcare provider in Novi makes an incredible amount of sense. It provides easy access to excellent healthcare and that s something we all need...but it s more than that. Let s put a business perspective on this. To have a vibrant, thriving, major hospital in that location creating jobs, providing economic spin-offs, enhancing our community infrastructure that s good for business and the community. 11 Using innovative technology and employing the educational principle of repeated practice with feedback, physicians will quickly achieve a higher level of expertise in this laboratory setting. SURGICAL AND PROCEDURAL EDUCATION CENTER ENHANCING SURGICAL SKILLS With medical therapies and surgical procedures becoming increasingly complex, the need for innovative medical education has never been greater. That s why St. John Providence Park Hospital in Novi will feature a state-of-the-art Surgical and Procedural Skills Education Center a specialized training laboratory where surgeons and other physicians can practice complex surgical and interventional procedures before performing the procedures on patients. Educational research into surgical skills acquisition and evaluation will also be conducted in the Surgical Skills Center providing answers to fundamental educational issues. In this way, the Center promises to not only enhance the surgical skills of physicians in the region, but also change the way fundamental surgical and interventional skills are taught and evaluated. 9

12 A big part of my job is identifying the newest healthcare technologies and figuring out what is needed in our hospitals. There s a lot of new technology out there, but it costs a lot of money...so my wife and I are giving to the campaign because I see the recent improvements in technology and I know what a difference those improvements will make for patients and we want to help. 13 You Can Help As you can imagine, a project of this scope requires substantial financial resources. Ascension Health the parent organization of St. John Health and St. John Providence Park Hospital is funding a significant portion of the $224 million cost of the project, but cannot do it alone. Ways of Giving Five-year cash pledges will be an important component of the fundraising campaign, but there are a variety of other options a donor can consider in making a major gift. Very often, these non-cash gifts can result in very favorable tax considerations for the donor. The hospital is closer to my house. It will be much more convenient for me.
