A student completing all three courses will have skills and knowledge to seek jobs in floral design. The three courses required to meet the criteria are: Floral Design 1, Floral Design 2, Floral Design 3. Classes are set to begin in the spring semester. Professor Ray Tucker has been teaching Floral Design for over 30 years and has encouraged thousands of people to join the floral trade. He has been involved in the industry as a board member of the local unit of FTD and Teleflora. He was President of the Inland Florists' Association. Over the years he has been featured as a designer for a variety of industry and community events, including the LA County Fair and the Pasadena Tournament of Roses. In addition, he has been seen on The Discovery Channel and a variety of local Southern California news programs. Novices can learn to make beautiful flower arrangements during a beginner's course. Tucker teaches how to use the sense of sight, smell, touch and sound to pick the very best of the floral products. He will explain the four basic shapes of flowers and how to pick out an interesting combination of forms. In addition Professor Tucker will teach the principles and applications of floral design including arrangements for holidays, parties, weddings and sympathy. These three courses are hands on. Florist management operations will also be emphasized.

February is American Heart Month Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, but heart disease is preventable and controllable. Heart disease is a major problem. Every year, about 715,000 Americans have a heart attack. About 600,000 people die from heart disease in the United State s each year that s 1 out of every 4 deaths. The term heart disease refers to several types of heart conditions. The most common type in the United States is coronary heart disease (also called coronary artery disease), which occurs when a substance called plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. Coronary heart disease can cause heart attack, angina, heart failure and arrhythmias. Cardiovascular disease including heart disease and stroke, costs the United States $312.6 billion each year. This total includes the cost of health care services, medications and lost productivity. These conditions also are a leading cause of disability, preventing Americans from working and enjoying activities. The situation is alarming, but there is good news heart disease is preventable and controllable. We can start by taking small steps every day to bring our loved ones and ourselves closer to heart health. Source: You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease. To lower your risk: Get active and eat healthy. Watch your weight. 3 P A G E 3 Banks and credit card companies are in the process of issuing customers new "chip" cards. "The data is protected in an integrated circuit [rather than a magnetic strip], and there's a dynamic code that resets after each use," explains Vernon Marshall, senior vice president and functional risk officer for American Express. "They're almost impossible to counterfeit." Magnetic Strip Integrated Circuit Chip But here's the scam. The Federal Trade Commission is warning that con artists are impersonating card issuers and sending s requesting personal and financial information, or asking that you click on a malware-laced link before being issued a new card. The fraudsters are sending s purporting to be from companies such as American Express that convincingly use the company's logo and color scheme, and even have footer links such as "View Our Privacy Policy" and "Contact Us." Your Plan No credit card company will or call you to verify personal info it already has on file before mailing a new card. (At most, you'll get a letter in the mail saying it will arrive soon.) If you're ever unsure, simply call the number on the back of your card (not the one supplied by the ) and ask the company if it's trying to contact you. I AM A MOUNTIE Student Don Metzger is the creator and artist of imaginative pictures of animals and plants. Mr. Metzger has been taking the computer classes at the Walnut Senior Center. He first learned about shapes on the computer from his instructor, Shelly Rzonca. Seeing the possibilities of creating things from the simple shapes on the computer, he spent a lot of time and experimentation to learn and refine his art. Some of the whimsical creatures that Mr. Metzger generates are monkeys, hippos, elephants, and grasshoppers. This tuition FREE class will prepare you to care for a loved one or seek employment as a Personal Care Aide/Caregiver.
