The Task Force sought to develop stadards that: (1) emphasize that programs are desiged to provide professioal educatio; (2) are based o the best available evidece; ad (3) support the philosophy outlied i the preamble to the revised requiremets. Proposed revisios iclude chages i the followig areas: Patiet safety, supervisio, ad accoutability: Icreased emphasis o patiet safety ad quality improvemet Professioalism Well-beig of residets ad faculty Fatigue mitigatio Cliical resposibilities, teamwork, ad trasitios of care Cliical Experiece ad Educatio (replacig the term duty hours ) Chages made i this sectio iclude: coutig work from home i the 80-hour work week; all residets must ot exceed 24 hours of cotiuous cliical assigmets (ow icludes PGY-1 s); work hour exceptios for up to a maximum of 88 hours may be grated for specialty specific rotatios; followig had-offs at the coclusio of scheduled work periods, residets ca volutarily remai at work i uusual circumstaces withi the 80-hour work week; all residets must have 14 hours free after 24 hours of cliical assigmets; The ope commet period eded i December, ad the AC Board of Directors reviewed the proposed fial requiremets i February ad March of The approved summary of chages of the requiremets (Sectio VI oly) is posted o the AC website (lik below). 3 EDUCATION COMMITTEE NEWS AC correspodece received sice the last meetig was distributed to the committee members, icludig otificatio of the Gyecologic Ocology program s iitial accreditatio. MGH GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE/ECOTE SUBCOMMITTEE At the December meetig of MGH s C a umber of iteral review reports were approved (Child Neurology, Neuroradiology, Hematology, Vascular & Itervetioal Radiology ad Pediatric Radiology) ad resposes to prior iteral reviews were reported (Geriatric Medicie, PHS Dermatology, Vascular Surgery ad Neuropathology). The Aesthesia Residecy Program Director chage from Dr. Keith Baker to Dr. Daiel Saddawi-Koefka was approved. Dr. Saddawi-Koefka is a graduate of the MGH Aesthesia residecy ad Critical Care fellowship. Dr. Baker will cotiue i his role as vice chair for Educatio. Dr. Co gave the committee a report o the Aual Istitutioal Review (AIR), ad oted a umber of areas for actio, icludig: residet/fellow evaluatio; performace feedback for faculty; educatio/service balace; providig traiees with data about practice habits; traiee educatio ad egagemet i quality improvemet ad patiet safety activities; ad improvig the learig eviromet with a focus o traiee welless. Dr. Co also gave a brief summary of the verbal report-out from MGH s CLER visit that occurred 11/29-12/1. Improvemets i care trasitios sice the last CLER visit were ackowledged. There is still room for improvemet i patiet safety/quality improvemet, supervisio, professioalism ad welless for both traiees ad faculty. Dr. Weistei discussed the overall goals of the Parters 2.0 effort, ad commeted about the process ad timelie. Followig a diagostic ad the a plaig phase, recommedatios will be vetted ad decisios made i Cosideratios i the educatio sphere iclude committee structure, opportuities for program collaboratio or itegratio ad where/how various decisios are made. It was also oted that a Parters 2.0 Credetialig Task Force is developig a model for a cetralized credetialig process to be used throughout Parters. BWH EDUCATION COMMITTEE At the December BWH Educatio Committee meetig, Dr. Co provided the committee with a summary of the Aual Istitutioal Review ad highlighted some of the proposed actio plas for the upcomig year. He also discussed the implemetatio of the Quality Improvemet ad Patiet Safety core curriculum, icludig the itroductio of the CPIP (Cliical Process Improvemet Leadership Program) courses that are iteded to provide traiees with coceptual basics as well as to facilitate their work o 3

4 QI projects. The committee also heard from Kare Fiumara, PharmD, who was ivited to discuss the 2016 Patiet Safety Culture Survey ad the istitutioal-level Patiet Safety reportig ad follow-up process. The committee approved several program requests, icludig program director trasitio from Dr. Scott Marti to Dr. Elizabeth Matzki i the Orthopaedic Sports Medicie fellowship ad from Dr. Adam Kibel to Dr. George Haleblia i the Urology residecy; termiatio of affiliatio with BIDMC i Urology effective July 1, 2017; ad the Diagostic Radiology program s applicatio seekig RRC approval of a Early Specializatio i Itervetioal Radiology (ESIR) track. The committee members were also iformed about the curret status of duty hours compliace across BWH programs, recet RRC correspodece, proposed revisios to the AC Commo Program Requiremets ad recommedatios from the Iteral ad Special Review reports ad program resposes to prior reports. The meetig cocluded with Dr. Weistei s presetatio related to our aual survey of o-ac fellows ad a discussio of the ew program approval process by the Parters Educatio Committee. The ext meetig will be held o Moday, March 27, 2017 at 10 am i the Delad Board Room PB-4. PARTNERS EDUCATION COMMITTEE See ews from the Parters Educatio Committee i the ext issue. MGH ECOTE PILOT GRANT PROJECTS 4 The MGH Executive Committee o Teachig ad Educatio (ECOTE) itroduced its Educatio ad Teachig Pilot Grat program i the witer of 2014 with a call for proposals from the MGH commuity. The program sought proposals for research studies or pilot projects that would ivestigate iovative, cuttig edge approaches to medical educatio, especially those focused o oe or more of the followig themes: iter-discipliary educatio; developig ad supportig educators; deliberate practice; competecy assessmet; measurig outcomes of teachig/educatio; ad teachig Commuity Health as a core value. ECOTE received 42 submissios ad, after a careful review process, awarded 14 grats of approximately $25,000 each for a fudig period of 18 moths (April 1, 2015-September 30, 2016). Ivestigators were resposible for submittig progress reports ad fial reports were due o November 30, With the projects ow complete, this article summarizes the results of the pilot grat program. Improvig the quality of teachig ad developmet of programs for teachig faculty was a theme i several projects. Fi, et al leveraged techology to create a edurig library of video scearios that ca be used by the faculty to assist with developmet of providig feedback, teachig ad preceptig i a cliical settig. Scott-Veraglia, et al created a coachig program to develop faculty as educators, traied as experts i observatio ad feedback. This has assisted two of the project ivestigators i obtaiig educatioal leadership positios withi their departmet. The program created by Baister, et al has resulted i stregtheig the academic practice partership betwee MGH ad the MGH Istitute of Health Professios. The focus of their grat was the developmet of cliical faculty to provide iterprofessioal cliical educatio usig

5 a toolkit, workshop, olie ad osite resources developed specifically from this grat. Johso et al created a ovel cliical teachig assessmet tool ad utilized stadardized traiees to develop a teachig curriculum. Miehart ad Scemama de Gialluly ehaced professioal developmet coachig for residets by providig the coaches with ecessary traiig ad resources. I a era of icreasig time costraits o our faculty, the use of self-directed learig has become a essetial compoet of residet educatio. Saddawi-Koefka et al sought to determie if givig residets istructio o specific learig strategies would assist them with their self-directed educatioal goals ad achievemets. Ziperstei et al developed a iphoe applicatio for residets to log ad track cliical learig over time with the evetual goal of icreasig idividualized ad self-directed learig withi the residecy program. The projects highlighted the use of simulatio as a methodology to assess cliical competecy ad proficiecy utilizig direct observatio of traiees. Gee et al developed a proficiecy-based, virtual reality curriculum to prepare traiees for the Fudametals of Edoscopic Surgery examiatio. To improve the procedural traiig i their residecy program, Ray et al created ad employed a simulatio curriculum for musculoskeletal joit examiatio ad itervetio. A eight-hour simulatio sessio was created by Takayesu et al to provide residets with a 1:1 direct observatio by faculty. The secod of two grats awarded to Gee et al focused o usig simulatio for the simulatio milestoes assessmet. Techology was also employed i iovative ways. Chaukos et al used a combiatio of physiologic moitorig ad survey results to track residet health ad burout i her stress maagemet ad resiliecy traiig program for residets. A learig maagemet system was developed by Khatri et al to assist residecy programs with makig sure that defied traiig milestoes are met by the traiees. All 14 of the grat teams showcased a poster at the first ECOTE Symposium held o May 16, Posters may be viewed at I additio there were seve local presetatios, eight atioal presetatios, ad oe iteratioal presetatio geerated from the grat data. 6 PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT Dr. Joel Katz desiged the art curriculum, which has bee featured i multiple ews stories ad has become a model for other hospitals. 6 BWH INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY A iovative compoet of the BWH Iteral Medicie Residecy shows that medicie is a art as much as a sciece. The Team Buildig Through the Arts course is offered as part of the Itegrated Teachig Uit (ITU) a oe-moth rotatio that provides a opportuity for housestaff ad attedigs to work with a multidiscipliary team of urses, case maagers, social workers ad physical therapists i the cliical settig durig the day, ad explore the works of art i the eveig. The Fie Arts Program was developed to (1) use art to break cultural barriers ad traditioal hierarchies i multidiscipliary medical teams, (2) uderstad how arts ad humaities ca help medical professioals form idetities that promote collaborative thikig, ad (3) recogize the importace of ad help to cultivate reflective medical practice. Facilitators with a backgroud i professioal arts educatio joi the medical team o rouds. I the eveig, the medical team, icludig attedigs, residets, iters ad urses, jois the facilitator at the Museum of Fie Arts. Through carefully selected works of art, facilitators foster collaborative problem solvig, ivite the expressio of multiple perspectives, brig the team together as they discuss the challeges ad rewards of their shared professio, ad ecourage a awareess of how the group works together. The program uses fie art to take team members outside their comfort zoe, stimulate bidirectioal coversatios that capture a wide rage of perspectives, promote deep uderstadig of these perspectives, stimulate self-reflectio about professioal idetities ad lead to sustaiable culture chage. Whe you survey patiets, very few of them complai about the kowledge base of their doctor or the fact that their doctor does t kow aatomy, Dr. Katz said. What they complai about is that their doctor is iefficiet or ieffective i commuicatig. That s what patiets feel ad that s what we re tryig to address with these programs. Dr. Katz chose the art museum because it allows everybody to focus o a exteral object i a way that I would say takes the persoal aspects out ad lets them solve problems together. The effects of the program o psychological safety, team rouds ad commuicatio betwee physicias ad urses will be studied.

7 EVENTS The office is curretly orgaizig a 1st Aual Program Director Retreat for this sprig PROGRAM DIRECTOR WORKSHOPS Program Director Workshops focus o key topics while addressig professioal developmet eeds ad cultivatig a sese of commuity. Offerig each topic at both BWH ad MGH provides two chaces for participats to accommodate their schedules. I September 2016, Dr. Tracey Milliga, former program director i the Parters Neurology Residecy Program offered a pair of workshops etitled Selectig the Right Residet. Durig these stadig-room oly sessios, Dr. Milliga cited evidece-based processes for traiee recruitmet ad stimulated a lively discussio of strategies that were shared across programs ad istitutios. To help program directors better address burout amog their traiees, Dr. Carol Berstei came as a visitig speaker i October 2016 to address Physicia Well-Beig: Challeges ad Opportuities. Dr. Berstei is the vice-chair for Educatio ad program director of the residecy traiig program i the Departmet of Psychiatry at New York Uiversity School of Medicie, ad co-chair of the AC Task Force o Physicia Wellbeig. Dr. Berstei reviewed commo causes of depressio ad burout amog traiees ad discussed iitiatives beig implemeted o atioal, istitutioal ad program levels to address this issue. She emphasized that primary barriers to residets seekig help are 1) time ad 2) stigma associated with receivig metal health services. More iformatio about Dr. Berstei s talk ca be foud o the website I Jauary 2017 program director workshops focused o A New View of New Iovatios (NI): Tools for the Program Director: A (re)itroductio to tools, dashboards, ad useful reports to help ru your traiig program. The speaker was Shaw Leslie, a accout specialist with New Iovatios. I additio to coverig the basic compoets of NI (program dashboard, evaluatios, ERAS import, ad reports), Mr. Leslie showcased some of the less kow features such as: checklists to moitor traiee tasks (aual paperwork, HealthStream modules) ad robust fuctioality of the Milestoes module. He also discussed the ARMIS mobile applicatio that allows evaluators to complete evaluatios o their iphoes. These workshops idetified idividual challeges ad provided more resources for ogoig idividualized program support for these admiistrative fuctios. Some program directors have suggested a loger, retreat-style workshop that would allow time to efficietly touch upo multiple topics. NATIONAL EMERGENCY MEDICINE PROGRAM DIRECTOR AWARD Please joi us i cogratulatig Eric S. Nadel, MD, director of the Parters Emergecy Medicie Residecy Program ad a associate director of, o beig awarded the 2017 Michael P. Waiscott Program Director Award.
