2 How we got started Public disclosure legally required (since 2005) Almost 2000 hospital quality reports Usability of PDF reports inadequate for patients Lack of unbiased and comprehensive information No effective support for patients Informed decision-making impossible Goal: Creating a patient-focused and trustworthy patient information website on hospital quality
3 1. Patients don t trust everybody! Who is trustworthy? Patients prefer to receive information from independent information givers like consumer or self-help associations

Information overload not welcome Hospital quality information should always refer to the individual diagnosis or the necessary treatment Our solution: System of indication-based mapping rules Weisse Liste always offers selected set of data Specific to the individual indication ( didactic reduction )

Language and knowledge barriers are hard to break down Lay persons not familiar with medical terms Do not know how to interpret indicators and quality data Patients need presentation in colloquial language Simple illustrations and educational interpretation guidelines Our solutions: Translation of medical terms (including ICD) Medical search engine More than 1000 responses [...] indicate that people take an interest but still do not really know how to use these tools and how to interpret the answers they get

Importance and convieniance of clinical outcome indicators sometimes overrated Communication, information and therapist-patient-relationship also play a decisive role At present no patient survey on a national level. Plurality of questionnaires and methods makes comparison and benchmarking on national level impossible
13 Our solution: Patient s Experience Questionnaire Validated core set instrument Developed in Germany (Bertelsmann Sitftung) and Switzerland (Verein Outcome) Helps to measure and compare patient experiences on a national level
14 5. Multi-channel-approach Choice of information media depends on individual preferences It needs more than a website to turn information into decisions Our solution: Cooperation with telephone help-lines and local patient information centers - plus customized pdf-hand-out Multi-Channel-Strategy
