1 A Quarterly Newsletter For Enriching Your Health MIC (P) 028/10/2013 April 2015 Tan Tock Seng Hospital Renews DOT & SHOP Partnership With SATA CommHealth SATA CommHealth Chairman Mr Ang Hao Yao (third from right), CEO Dr K Thomas Abraham (second from right), TBCU Senior Consultant Prof Sonny Wang (second from left) and National TB Case Manager Mdm Han Hwee Yin (extreme left) at the signing ceremony of the renewed partnership. SATA CommHealth and TTSH Tuberculosis Control Unit (TBCU) renewed their MOU to continue their intended goal to increase the treatment compliance rates for TB treatment among patients under the DOT&SHOP programme on 24 March, which coincided with World TB Day. The full course of TB treatment can be challenging to some TB patients as they find it difficult to adhere to the entire course of multiple medications over six to nine months for a cure to take effect and also to avoid future relapses. To encourage TB patients to complete the entire treatment, each patient will be given a supermarket voucher upon achieving the expected compliance level. The maximum amount of $350 will be issued to each eligible patient during the estimated duration of six months. The vouchers serve as incentives and enablers to the TB patients as they complete their treatments. SATA CommHealth will contribute up to S$100,000 worth of vouchers from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2016 under the new MOU. Basically, patients who are citizens or permanent residents (PR) of Singapore with a household per capita income (PCI) of $900 or below are eligible for the DOT&SHOP programme. Dr K Thomas Abraham, CEO SATA CommHealth said, The renewed partnership between SATA CommHealth and TBCU encourages better adherence to the programme for the TB patients and will certainly bring us closer to eradicating TB and preserving the health of the community. According to TBCU, a total number of 1,421 TB patients are registered as of 31 December 2014 under the DOT&SHOP programme since the inception of the programme by Tan Tock Seng Hospital in The supermarket vouchers given to me while I go for my treatments are important to me. They were very useful to me and my family as I could buy nutritious food while I was on treatment said Mr Ahmad, a fully recovered TB patient who was enrolled in the DOT&SHOP programme. q

SATA CommHealth rounded off the last of its CME talks on 4th December. This talk culminated in non-core points for doctors and medical professionals who attended the talks. The familiar venue was none other than the SATA CommHealth Auditorium at its Corporate Headquarters. This was part of the Continuing Medical Education (CME) series of talks delivered by renowned medical professionals. Entrance to the Continuing Medical Education talk. The last talk dealt with Tuberculosis in Singapore and the rising profile of Multiple Drug Resistant (MDR) TB by Prof Sonny Wang from Tan Tock Seng Hospital s Tuberculosis Control Unit. Many medical professionals and doctors in the audience were all ears when it came to the topic. They were all very interested to hear what this experienced medical professional had to impart regarding this once dreaded ailment that was never thoroughly eradicated even now. Mycobacterium, the bacteria that causes tuberculosis. As with many CME talks, the Q&A session saw an overly enthusiastic response from the participants. Some doctors had numerous questions regarding the protocol upon detection of this disease while many others in the audience wanted to know the efficacy of the present treatment methods surrounding this persistent disease. Many attendees, be it doctors or medical care workers gained a better understanding of the criteria for re-direction of the patient to TBCU once this disease was detected. Thanks to Prof Sonny Wang of Tuberculosis Control Unit for sharing his knowledge with SATA CommHealth and its invited audience. q SOCIAL INVOLVEMENT Paying Our Last Respects To Mr Lee Kuan Yew On 23 March, Singaporeans were deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Singapore s first Prime Minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew. His huge contributions to Singapore had earned tremendous respect from the local and international community. SATA CommHealth CEO Dr K Thomas Abraham, together with staff representatives, paid their respects to Mr Lee at the East Coast and Joo Chiat Cluster Community Tribute. Our heart-felt condolences go to Mr Lee s immediate TERTIARY EDUCATION HEALTHCARE Polytechnic Pre-admission Medical Check Ups The annual polytechnic pre-admission medical check up began in March. 3 4 HealthLine March HealthLine March 2015 COMMUNITY REACHOUT Doctors-On-Wheels Comes To Yuhua SAC COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Contributing Back To The Community Since 2007, SATA CommHealth has been running its Doctos-On-Wheels (DOW) programme providing medical healthcare services to the community especially to the elderly and needy people. The DOW team brings medical care to the community at a location near to them. In conjunction with the celebration of SG50, SATA CommHealth and Yuhua has jointly arranged for the DOW team to visit Yuhua Senior Activity Centre (SAC) to register participants for the healthcare services in February. The needy participants were highly subsidised under the DOW medical care programme. The elderly and needy residents were happy to be eligible for the DOW programme. q YOUTH SMOKING PREVENTION PROGRAMME Boys Brigade Smoke-Free Ambassador Training The final youth smoking prevention training programme for 2014 was held at SATA CommHealth auditorium on 3rd December. Boys Brigade members from several different secondary schools participated in the smoke free ambassador training session. The boys arrived in the morning for the one day event. Elderly residents at the Yuhua SAC waiting to be registered. Skits were also performed by the boys to allow them to unveil their creativity and courage with a sense of autonomy when faced with peer smokers. The SATA CommHealth Community Services team organised and supported each session to make it a successful affair. Time spent on planning has certainly paid off. It was a satisfying and joyous day for the SATA CommHealth Medical Transport Services team who turned up on a weekend to provide voluntary manpower and transport services to the community at Kembangan-Chai Chee district for the One Community Day 2015 event held on 1 February. The annual event was organised by We Care at One Community Kembangan-Chai Chee to gather their residents to show them the love, care and respect for each other. The event consisted of volunteers cleaning up needy residents homes, distribution of rice and groceries and a Tribute Dinner to honour the elderly residents. For the fifth year, people of all races and from all around the vicinity including SATA CommHealth volunteered to give their helping hands to ensure that the event went on smoothly. SATA CommHealth has been participating in the event since One of the SATA CommHealth vehicles at a designated HDB block at Kembangan- Chai Chee area with volunteers delivering packets of rice and groceries. The SATA CommHealth team reached Kembangan-Chai Chee area early Sunday morning to kick off the first activity of the day which was to distribute packets of rice and groceries to the residents with other volunteers. The process was tiring as volunteers had to go back and forth to the grocery distribution area and different HDB units to distribute the food rations. Everyone was in high spirits and eager to help while working as a team. SATA CommHealth bus captains helping elderly from various locations onto the vehicle and fetching them to the Tribute Dinner venue. After the distribution of rice, SATA CommHealth bus captains were involved in assisting and fetching the elderly from the community to the Tribute Dinner at the open field in front of Kampong Kembangan Community Club. As most of the elderly were frail and needed assistance to board the bus with their wheelchair, the bus captains moved swiftly yet with care to get the pioneer generation participants to reach the venue on time and back to their homes safely after the dinner. The event ended at around 10pm after a dazzling display of fireworks following song and dance performances during the dinner. Mr Tan Chuan-Jin (in yellow), Member of Parliament for Kembangan-Chai Chee, trying out the wheelchair lifter functions of the SATA CommHealth bus used for fetching the elderly to the dinner venue. SATA CommHealth mobilised a total of six Mobile Medical Services staff and three wheelchair-friendly vehicles to cover the activities that day. The event ended successfully with many happy faces. It brought love and joy to the residents of the community as everyone felt united as one. q The boys were formed into teams and taught the detrimental effects of smoking to health as well as the people around them. Each team member contributed in the group activities and delivered presentations to demonstrate their understanding of being a smoke free ambassador. This was the fourth smoke free ambassador training programme with The Boys Brigade since 2013 and SATA CommHealth is looking forward in educating and training more of the young members to educate our next generation in leading a healthy lifestyle. q Bus captains from SATA CommHealth Mobile Medical Services helping to distribute packets of rice and groceries to the residents during the event.
