1 - Medical & Non-Medical - Medical & Non-Medical Non-Medical The decision to seek non-medical home care services is an important one when realizing care is needed. Whether the decision maker is a person getting on in years who needs a little assistance to remain in their own home or a caregiver for an elderly relative or parent, the shift to home care can be a positive, beneficial change for all concerned. The important thing to realize is the mutual goal for everyone involved is the same: to allow a senior to remain safely in their own home with independence and dignity for as long as possible. Fa l l According to the 2005 Status of Seniors Initiative Planning Report commissioned by the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, 80,440 individuals age 60 or over live in Mecklenburg County and by 2030 this figure is anticipated to triple*. More than 43% of the older adult population can be defined as At Risk or Frail, due to their difficulty performing one or more basic tasks of daily living such as meal preparation or bathing In many instances regular assistance with activities of daily living (e.g. railing, repairs, etc.) is all that is required to maintain older adults in their homes. For older adults, remaining in one s home is often a priority and can lead to increased longevity and a healthier, active life. Even very active seniors who are able to attend socially based senior centers, attend church, or participate in other social activities outside of the home often need assistance with housework, handyman services, grocery shopping, transportation or meal preparation. Non-medical home care is for many a viable, cost effective solution. w w w. a l l f o r s e n i o r s - c h a r l o t t e. o r g The range of services for non-medical home care varies with different agencies, but in general they cover light housekeeping services, companionship, meal preparation, assistance with shopping, personal grooming, and, depending on the agency license, bathing. North Carolina requires an agency to be licensed to perform the various tasks listed above, but in particular personal grooming and bathing require increased licensing. Often for families aware of the need for assistance, non-medical home care can be a valuable choice for seniors close to them, while also providing a sense of assurance that their loved one will be cared for and safe. For most non-medical home care services, private pay is the primary payer, but long term care insurance may also play a role. Non-medical home care does not provide assistance with medical procedures, but rather exists to help with activities of everyday life and enrich the lives of seniors. Bonded. Backed by the ComForcare Home care is a broad term that describes a wide variety of health and health related services provided in the home setting. Home care is health care brought to your home to maintain or restore your health and well-being. Home care services include: Nursing, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Medical Social Work, In-home Aide Services, Medical Supplies and Equipment and other specialized services such as Infusion Therapy, Respiratory Therapy and Nutritional Services. Home Health Agency Home health agency means a home care agency which is certified to receive Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement for providing nursing care, therapy, medical social services, and home health aide services on a part-time, intermittent basis as set out in G.S (12). Each site providing home health services must have a separate certificate of need and a separate license. e n i o r S e r v i C e S Supporting independence, dignity and quality of life By Amy and Craig Weisenberger, Seniors Helping Seniors Co-owners. *Data taken from the 2000 U.S. Census S Quality Care Guarantee.
