About ICSB The International Council for Small Business is devoted to the advancement of management development practices for potential entrepreneurs and existing small business owner/managers through education, research, and the free exchange of ideas. The International Council for Small Business (ICSB) is a non-profit organization devoted to continuing management education for entrepreneurs and small business. The Council was founded in 1955 on the belief that enlightened small business management is necessary for successful and profitable small business; that successful small business is essential to our national economies; and that entrepreneurship needs to be fostered to stimulate a dynamic and growing economic system. Council members representing education, industry, financial institutions and government, provide a worldwide network of ideas and experience exchange on management assistance for small business. 2

MSMEs Day International Council for Small Business (ICSB) is a global network to promote the development of knowledge in small business and entrepreneurship. It works to deliver programs, workshops, training sessions and certifications to encourage knowledge sharing. Thanks to the initiative of ICSB, United Nations declared 27 June as the Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day. 4
2018 World Congress in Taiwan Each year, ICSB holds a Congress in a different area of the world to bring together practitioners, academics, and entrepreneurs to discuss medium, small, and micro-sized enterprises. The theme of the 2018 World Congress to be held in Taipei, Taiwan from June 26th-29th is Reshaping the World Through Innovative SMEs, which reaffirms the unshakable responsibility of SMEs in leading the world to the coming decades. Lyu Chairman of Taiwan Financial Holdings The State of MSMEs Global Report Moderator Luca Landoli Ming-Ji Wu José Ricardo da Veiga Alejandro Gonzalez Thami Mazwai Summary Report Geralyn Franklin
Plenary Session I 6/27 (Wednesday) 11:15-12:30 The Future of SMEs - The Forces Ahead Session Chair Chien-Fu Lin Moderator Winslow Sargeant Summary Report Ahmed Shalaby Candida Brush Donna Kelley Bernard Chan Hiroyuki Okamuro Aulia Halimatussadiah Olli Vuola New research reveals that smaller businesses are more open and optimistic about artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential to boost business growth. The human versus robots growth debate rages on, but new research suggests that SMEs and AI go hand-in-hand as smaller businesses reveal a more open and optimistic outlook towards artificial intelligence. 9
Plenary Session II 6/28 (Thursday) 09:30-11:00 Women in High Growth Entrepreneurship Welcome Remarks Tina Lo Session Chair Eileen Figueroa Rivera Viola Cheng Datuk Hafsah Annie Lo Moderator Geralyn Franklin Elim Chew Tui McKeown The phenomena of women s entrepreneurship, both the women business owners and their businesses, are viewed as a potential source of economic and social development. Critical and missing in the research are studies that focus on high growth women entrepreneurs. Growth-oriented businesses are essential for all economies to succeed because they are more likely to create jobs and support communities, achieve higher productivity, innovation and exporting. 10
Plenary Session III 6/28 (Thursday) 11:30-12:30 The State of Humane Entrepreneurship Session Chair Mark Brennan Moderator Ahmed Osman Ki-Chan Kim Roberto Parente Shih Young Son Summary Report Hooi Den Huan Timothy Ma Audrey Tang Humane entrepreneurship is the synergy of the Human Capital and the Enterprise Cycle. The Human Capital focuses on the workforce, customer wellbeing and environment. The Enterprise Cycle aligns itself with traditional entrepreneurship, growth for the company. While one country may value empowering the entrepreneur another may focus more on increasing the Human Capital. How can we achieve both? It is clear where the future lies: towards the more balance between Human Capital and Entrepreneurship. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development will require bold actions and new partnerships. 11
Plenary Session IV 6/29 (Friday) 09:30-11:00 Back to the Future A Look Back and into the Future with ICSB Most Decorated Fellows Session Chair Carol Y.Y. Lin Moderator Ayman Tarabishy It s one thing to have new ideas, but another to stand up for them. ICSB most decorated intellectuals, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers discuss how the field of entrepreneurship and small business evolved for the past 50 years. What ideas did they stand up for and what trends do they see repeating and how does the future look like? Publishing Research that Matter A New Way Ahead 12 Keynote Speaker George Solomon The topic to discuss and that ICSB cares deeply about is how to improve entrepreneurship and SME research quality worldwide. Overreliance on metrics dampens innovation. It can give an unfair advantage to late-stage researchers with large citation lists, enabling them to consistently win research grants and publications over young researchers with fresh ideas. It is time to look at how we encourage researchers to share their initial research protocols and final data, and to publish both positive and negative results.
