Fifty years of ivin. Of makin museums and libraries a reality. Of suortin educational rorams that exand the minds of children. Of resondin to disasters and brinin comfort at difficult times. Of makin low-income housin ossible. Of suortin cams for younsters. Of makin artistic vision a art of our everyday lives. This is art of the history and heritae of the Steelcase Foundation, which marks its 50 th anniversary this year. Fifty years of commitment to the health, mind and sirit of the community. When the founders of Steelcase first established the Foundation they did it with the same commitment to interity, quality and excellence demonstrated by the comany in its business oerations. They wanted a way to ive back to the communities that had been instrumental in the comany s oerations and rowth. So they established an oranization whose mission could be suorted lon-term throuh an endowment fund a means of ensurin continuity. The result is a record of leadershi in suortin human services, health, arts and cultural oranizations and community develoment. To celebrate its anniversary, the Steelcase Foundation aain has chosen a distinctive demonstration of its mission. Each of the nine Steelcase Foundation trustees selected an oranization he or she felt reresented the values and mission of the Foundation. Each of those oranizations has received an unrestricted rant of $50,000. Read more about each of these oranizations in our reort. These oranizations reflect our ast, our resent and our future and reresent the breadth of our suort over the years. We areciate bein in a osition to hel deservin oranizations and see the benefits rile throuh the community. These rants are our way of thankin the communities and the oranizations selected for bein enerous, smart, and carin. Each has sinificantly contributed to the community at lare. Over the ast 50 years, the Steelcase Foundation has iven close to one hundred million dollars to the various communities in which Steelcase has oerations. Just as these communities continue to rovide Steelcase outstandin emloyees and a business environment that encouraes and suorts rowth, the Steelcase Foundation is committed to suortin those activities that imrove the well-bein of the community at lare by examle. 13 Association for the Blind & Visually Imaired Vision loss imairs a erson s ability to carry out daily livin activities that those who are sihted may take for ranted. Communications, ersonal roomin, handlin finances, and manain the home are some activities imacted by vision loss. The Association for the Blind & Visually Imaired can t restore eyesiht but can hel to restore confidence and indeendence by teachin adatation to vision loss. For 90 years, the Association for the Blind & Visually Imaired has been carryin out the mission to advance the indeendence of those who are visually imaired and to romote the revention of blindness. Founder Roberta Griffith was a contemorary and friend of Helen Keller, who reatly influenced Roberta s vision for the oranization. Association For The Blind And Visually Imaired I was led to the Association for the Blind and Visually Imaired due to recent vision concerns in our family. The mission and the comassionate service delivery of the oranization imressed me. The Association reflects the values of the Steelcase Foundation because of its belief that the well bein of the erson is imroved by encourain the blind to overcome limitations imosed by their hysical, mental, and social condition. 2 Mary Goodwillie Nelson, Trustee 1 1

Aquinas Collee Peter M. Wee, Trustee 1 2

Aquinas Collee Aquinas Collee Aquinas Collee was founded in 1896 by the Dominican Sisters of Grand Raids. In keein with its namesake, 13 th Century scholar and teacher St Thomas Aquinas, the Collee has often been considered ahead of its time. Its record of firsts dates back to 1931 when it became the first Catholic coeducational collee in the U.S. and extends throuh this ast year when it bean the first underraduate deree in Sustainable Business. More than 2,600 full and art-time underraduate and raduate students from 20 states and 11 forein countries benefit from academic, social, cultural, and athletic oortunities on the Grand Raids camus and beyond. Aquinas students are enaed in a wide array of service learnin activities that address social, cultural, community health, environmental, and economic issues locally, throuhout the states, and in several other countries. It s no coincidence that Aquinas Collee has received a 50th Anniversary ift. I have been suortin the Collee for a lon time. My heart and mind have been enaed in the develoment of Aquinas as the finest small Catholic collee in the United States. I am roud of my connection with Aquinas and wil continue to try and make it what I know it can be. 3 Peter M. Wee, Trustee 1 3

Baxter Community Center Frank H. Merlotti, Trustee 1 4

Baxter Community Center A wise erson once said that you can tell a lot about a erson s heart by watchin their hands for a day. The eole of Baxter Community Center strive to use their hands to hold Baxter Commuity Center and sustain their community, carin for children, workin toward racial reconciliation, strivin to mentor, carin for the sick, rovidin food and clothin, helin to oranize financial matters, and reachin out to others to sincerely offer love and resect. Baxter s Mission, A Christian Resonse to Human Needs, is carried out in their rorams: daycare, family assistance, holistic health clinic, and the Mizizi Maji Mentorin Proram. Baxter Community Center is located in southeast Grand Raids. I ve always felt that Baxter Community Center eitomized how badly-needed services could and should be delivered to a community. Frank H. Merlotti, Trustee 4 1 5

Grand Raids Public School Kate Pew Wolters, TRUSTEE 1 6

Grand Raids Public Schools The Grand Raids Public Schools system is the third larest school district in Michian, servin 24,500 students with fewer than 4,000 emloyees. The district faces the same challenes as most other lare urban districts in the country: hih student mobility, low achievement, dwindlin resources, and ain facilities. GRAND RAPIDS PUBLIC SCHOOLS The school district is in the midst of the most sinificant lanned chane in its 153- year history as it works with the community to become stroner/better/toether. A new Action Plan for Learnin states a clear oal for imrovement: By 2007, all Grand Raids Public Schools K-8 students will read and write at or above rade level and will be able to aly these skills to real life situations. At least eihty ercent of the students enterin our hih schools as freshmen will raduate and will have at least rade level readin, writin and comutin skills. "Public education is vital to a democratic society. Everyone has access to ublic schools, reardless of race, ender, ability, or family income, makin the schools one of the few laces in our society that reresents and serves everyone. Suortin the Grand Raids Public Schools reresents a commitment to the future and a demonstration of suort for tomorrow's arents, doctors, teachers, leaders and others who will need a sound education to survive in an increasinly comlex and challenin world." 5 Kate Pew Wolters, TRUSTEE 1 7

Heart of West Michian United Way In the turmoil of World War I, Grand Raids citizens incororated the Federation of Social Aencies to serve individuals in need by collectin donations from the entire community and distributin them to various service aencies. Now known as the Heart of West Michian United Way, the mission is still focused on servin the community by increasin the oranized caacity of eole to care for one another. Heart of West Michian United Way United Way brins eole toether to identify and focus on the most critical community needs. Throuh United Way s Community Investment Fund, over one hundred knowledeable volunteers make decisions to distribute contributions to nearly 150 health and human service rorams (throuh 70 artner aencies). The lives of 250,000 individuals will be chaned throuh ifts this year. The Steelcase Foundation was founded on the rincile of ivin back to its community throuh suort of human service oranizations. The Heart of West Michian United Way stands out by rovidin a sinle oortunity for ivin and, throuh the United Way structure, of suortin multile human service aencies. Over the years, we have seen the reat ood works done here by the United Way artner aencies. Robert C. Pew, II, Trustee Emeritus & former Chair of the Board 6 1 9

St. John s Home St. John s Home Founded in 1889, St. John s is west Michian s oldest children s home. This nondenominational aency serves abused, nelected and troubled children and adolescents on a 25-acre camus at the northern ede of the City of Grand Raids. Desin of the facility and rounds is intentionally homelike and beautiful to convey feelins of love and hoefulness to children. The Home s sirit of otimism about youth is reflected in its uarantee of a collee education for every one of its troubled younsters. Strivin for creativity, effectiveness and efficiency in develoin rorams for youth, St. John s recently added the Kidsfirst emerency shelter roram, Host Home as a solution for teenaers needin a family to row in; and the Discovery roram for teens with dru and alcohol roblems. St. John s Home is one of my favorite charities because they do a tremendous job of takin in troubled boys and irls. They rovide counselin, education, and a lace to live. Currently 58 children are bein cared for and becomin resonsible citizens. St. John s truly does a commendable job in savin youn lives. David D. Huntin, Jr., Trustee 7 2 1

West Michian Horticultural Society, Meijer Gardens The botanical ardens and sculture ark romote the enjoyment, understandin and areciation of ardens, sculture, the natural environment, and the arts. This mission is fulfilled throuh exhibitions, events, rorams and classes to meet the diverse needs of members and uests. Nearly 500,000 visitors annually enjoy both indoor and outdoor horticultural exhibitions, a erennial arden, and nature trail. Inside, visitors can see lant varieties from all over the world in Michian s larest troical conservatory, an arid arden, carnivorous lant house, and a seasonal dislay reenhouse. A thirty-acre Sculture Park resents twenty-four works in natural landscae settins. Intended to row to more than eihty works over time, the collection focuses on established and emerin scultors from the late nineteenth century to the resent. The Lena Meijer Children s Garden will oen in June of 2004, resentin a five-acre learnin landscae. West Michian Horticultural Society, Meijer Gardens The Children s Garden will rovide a reat educational and entertainment oortunity for thousands of younsters from the schools systems. I believe that children from the city schools will enjoy a secial exerience as they walk throuh the arden and learn how and why thins row as well as lay in water attractions, tree houses, and on the swinin brides. The Children s Garden is a natural fit for the mission and rinciles of the Steelcase Foundation as it strives to imrove all tyes of education for the youth of our area. Earl D. Holton, Trustee 2 3 8
