THORNYDALE 11AM 12PM SOCIAL HOUR 12 NOON LUNCH It is with regret that we announce the resignations of Rebecca Starling, Ev Williams, Ann Williams, Bev Rigsby, Judy Ortiz and Margaret Basham- Hubbard from the Pioneer board. We are grateful to them all for their dedication to the Pioneers during their time on the board. Please notify our new Fellowship Chair Adella Mason of any illness or passing of Pioneers or their family members. She can be reached either by adzik@comcast.net Or text or call her on: BACKPACKS FOR KIDS!! This is a new project starting in January Take a backpack and a list of needed items, fill it and bring it back to the luncheon in February. We are going to try and get groups of backpacks (about 20 to 25 per school) to donate to public elementary schools located in low-income communities. We have contacted two of those schools in TUSD so far, and they are both excited to have us support their students. Many students who need a back pack, have limited or no supplies from home. The beginning of school is not the only time there is a need. The school counselors will distribute the backpacks on an as needed basis. Pick up your empty backpack at the January luncheon, or contact Jan Pitts or Patti Pace to get one.

2 Well another year is almost gone and the Pioneers have been busy. Here is a brief summation of what we have done. January - A group went to the Community Food Bank and worked for about 4 hours. Man they really kept us busy. Several Pioneers started volunteering at Sister Jose. This is a women's homeless shelter. We also received a grant from the chapter to purchase items they were in need of. At our board meetings we have been discussing the need for some fund raisers. If anyone has any ideas we could sure use them. February - We have been active with Readers for Life (RFL). Approximately 800 books were purchased and distributed to 4 schools. The kids really enjoy getting these books to keep and take home. We have ROCKY the RFL raccoon that greets the kids and shakes his hand. Scholarship forms were sent out in the newsletter. Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from a Pioneer March - Another one of our projects is EEE, this is a homeless shelter for vets (men and women). We have donated many household items to this organization. Janine Quinn has become our senior vice president for the So. AZ club.she will be a great asset to our club because she is still working for CenturyLink and can get information to our Pioneers that are still working. We want to include all Pioneers out there and maybe they can come up with new ideas for fund raising or any projects that they may already be involved in that we may be able to help with. Our Cash Extravaganza started this month. This and the Jim Click raffle for a vehicle have been our only fundraisers. We need more. April -We had our beeping Easter Egg Hunt at the AZ Deaf and Blind School on April 13th. We received back 6 scholarship applications. A committee gathered to go over them and 2 were chosen. Names were announced at the April luncheon. May - Scholarship recipients and family members attended the May luncheon and were presented with their certificates. Over the summer a motion was made to purchase food and supplies to AZ Fisher House at the VA. Sister Jose got moved into their much larger facility and several Pioneers attended an open house. September - The board adopted a new Backpack project. We purchased 72 backpacks and are asking anyone to fill with school supplies. These supplies will go to underprivileged kids at several schools that were contacted. If anyone would like to fill one please contact me at or Patti Pace at We have a typed up list if you would like one. October - Ann Williams started handing out Christmas stockings that will be given to the clients of Mobile Meals. We fill them with small items like lotions, shampoo and conditioners, puzzle books etc. The CenturyLink yards made a big impact last year with this project. Thanks to Janine we were able to put food boxes in the yards to collect nonperishable items for the food bank. We had our luncheon picnic at Reid Park and also collected food and cash for the food bank. Thanks Cathy Greer for organizing the picnic. A dinner was served to the women at Sister Jose, which they greatly appreciated. We also took them all the leftover food from the picnic. They also asked for a volunteer to teach the women basic computer skills. Rebecca Starling has volunteered to do this. Pioneers donated to assist in the purchase of software and computers. We have a new web master to take care of our chapter web site. Anna Patton is doing a great job setting this up. It will have the newsletters for the clubs, any events coming up plus fundraising. Adella Mason is taking over fellowship, Mary and John Seagle are taking over the lap robes. We have donated approximately $3100 in monetary and non monetary donations to different organizations in Tucson. To be able to continue this we need to continue with fundraisers. If you have Bookman credit slips that have been rattling around in your purse or wallet, why not contribute them to be used to help these libraries? The Amphi Foundation is helping the teachers obtain books immediately to repair the vandalism. Give your slips to Patti Pace, , she will get them to the foundation Director. Teachers will make a special shopping trip with Teachers from both schools. Marilyn Reno ANSWERING THE CALL GRANT One of our projects Esperanza En Escalante, a non profit that provides housing, social services, programs and transportation to assist a Veteran s transition into everyday life in our community, (EEE works closely with the City of Tucson, Pima County and the State of Arizona, The Veteran s Administration and many other institutions and organizations meeting the physical and social needs of our honored veterans), was awarded the Answering The Call of Those In Need Grant. The grant is awarded from the Pioneers Charitable Foundation Fund. Currently there is space for 74 veterans and their families, receiving secure transitional housing for up to two years. Because this project is transitional there is a constant turnover and waiting list to utilize these facilities. Approximately 200+ individuals a year are assisted in the program. EEE also has woman and single family units available to our veterans. There is housing for 60 persons, with a goal of an additional 48 units of transitional and permanent housing by Rebecca Starling, Military Chair, was able to use the grant to purchase many household items, which included dinnerware, cookware, vacuums, microwave, towels, and sheets for the units SISTER. JOSE WOMEN S SHELTER Answering the Call to Those in Need Grant, was also awarded to our Women's Outreach project, Sister Jose Women's Shelter. The shelter is dedicated to the care and nurture of homeless women in a welcoming and safe environment. They opened their new 9000 sq. ft. facility at 1050 S. Park Ave in May Already the number of homeless women they serve is growing. Daily visits are up from a previous high of 65 guests to a new high of 95! In their new home, they can offer an emergency overnight program that accommodates 35 women an additional 21 safe spaces for women, year round. Pioneer volunteers currently volunteer more than 85 hours a month. Thanks to Chair Beverly Rigby and co-chair Judy Ortiz for purchasing items for the shelter.

4 ARIZONA CHAPTER #66 & SATPC LEGACY WEST PIONEERS- SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS (Revised Nov 2017) Purpose: To encourage qualified students within the state of Arizona to seek higher education beyond the secondary school level, and to provide financial assistance through the award of a $1, scholarship in this state each year. The Arizona Chapter 66 Scholarships and Southern AZ Telecom Pioneers Scholarships are open to any student with an accompanying letter of recommendation from a Legacy West Pioneer. SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH APPLICANT 1. Any high school senior or current college student enrolled in an accredited college or university. 2. Definite choice of a liberal arts college, technical institute, teacher training college, specialized college school of nursing or junior college, provided that the institution offers a standard degree or certification course of study for no less than two years. 3. Acceptance by college or institute of choice. 4. Completion of this application, twice if applying for both scholarships. 5. Attach a copy of your latest school transcripts. 6. Interview with scholarship committee, if requested. 7. Positive need for scholarship. 8. On a separate paper, in 500 words or less, tell us about your community service or volunteer activity and the goals you have set for yourself. 9. At least one current letter of recommendation by a Legacy West Pioneer.
