1 DIOCESE OF SYRACUSE CATHOLIC CHARITIES & COMMUNITY SERVICES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOB SUMMARY: The Executive Director is the President/CEO of Catholic Charities and is responsible for leading, directing, interacting with and overseeing the six regional offices of Catholic Charities. The Executive Director also is responsible for overseeing the following community services: Office of Disability and Public Policy, Catholic Campaign for Human Development; Catholic Relief Services; Ministries of Social Action and the Asian Apostolate Work. ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS: As President/CEO of the Diocese of Syracuse Catholic Charities, Inc., this position reports directly to the Bishop of Syracuse and works collaboratively with a Corporate Board of Trustees. The Executive Director sets goals and objectives collaboratively with area directors/boards through the mechanism of a strategic plan. The position is responsible for reviewing and evaluating the attainment of the performance and organizational goals set by the strategic plan and for establishing the budget. Additionally, the Executive Director is responsible for the annual budget process for community services and for the guidance and evaluation of staff and programs. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: To ensure the best results, the Executive Director actively facilitates collaboration and partnerships by personally promoting participation, volunteerism, leadership and philanthropy within the Diocesan Catholic Charities and the greater Diocesan ecumenical community. Internal Relationships The Executive Director works directly with the Bishop of Syracuse, Corporate Board of Trustees, Catholic Charities Area Executive Directors, Area Board of Directors, and diocesan employees relating to community services. External Relationships The Executive Director maintains professional relationships with NYSCC and NYS Catholic Charities colleagues, CCUSA, CCHD and CRS. Locally, the Executive Director interacts with community leaders/groups, government agencies, major donors and other leading philanthropists to promote the Catholic identity of Catholic Charities services, programs and initiatives. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: CATHOLIC CHARITIES: 1. Responsible for the overall well-being of the Diocese of Syracuse Catholic Charities, Inc. by: a. Assuring regional agencies are compliant with Corporate By-Laws; b. Providing leadership and long-term vision to significantly increase Catholic Charities visibility and image as the social arm of the Church; c. Implementing diocesan policies and strategies to monitor and assure fiscal responsibility, accountability and best practices; d. Being the chief spokesperson and advocate for the Diocese of Syracuse Catholic Charities, Inc.;

2 e. Providing the organization with the vision and leadership to carry out the mission of Catholic Charities as a model of best practices; f. Monitoring the fiscal status of Catholic Charities, i.e., monthly/quarterly reports, budgeting, out of budget spending, investment, dio-pool and revenue resources; g. Overseeing Hope Appeal and Heritage Fund budgeting and distribution processes; h. Interacting with outside auditors to monitor Diocesan Catholic Charities financial position and assure that its financial practices meet accepted auditing standards. 2. Responsible for overseeing that adequate and required Corporate Compliance processes and procedures are in place for the Catholic Charities corporate entity. Among other items: a. Responsible for Plan Document, i.e., current plan, monitoring changes, annual Board review; b. Monitor consultant (currently Bonadio Group) and legal counsel; c. Work through area executive directors to provide the implementation of Corporate Compliance programming at the area level to ensure conformity with funding sources, regulatory agencies, etc.; d. Work directly with area compliance officers on issues of concern, reporting, disclosures, etc.; e. Be the contact for area agency Whistle Blower complaints. 3. Serve as President of the Corporate Board of Trustees. Responsibilities include: a. All aspects of the Corporate Board of Trustees; b. Scheduling meetings, setting agendas, distributing Board packets, etc.; c. Assuring Trustees are kept apprised of pertinent information; d. Being a member of the Executive, Finance, Audit and Nominating/Governance Committees; e. Ensuring the convening of the Annual Member meeting. 4. Liaison to the Diocese: a. Primary liaison from Catholic Charities to the Bishop of the Diocese of Syracuse; b. Interacts with other diocesan colleagues and staff including: *Attendance at Safe Environment meeting once/month; *Human Resources and Benefits Committee quarterly meetings; *Others as identified. 5. Additional Roles and Responsibilities: a. Ex-officio member of area Boards, each of the six areas meets once per month; b. Ex-officio member of the Christopher Community Board, meets once per month; c. Member of the New York State Catholic Charities Advisory Committee, meets every other month. COMMUNITY SERVICES: 1. Ministries of Social Action 2. Office of Disability and Public Policy 3. Catholic Campaign for Human Development: a. Review and oversight of national grant process (Nov timeframe); b. Liaison to National CCHD Office; c. Interact with Northeast grant specialist on CCHD grants; d. Principal contact between grant recipients and diocese; e. Network with local organizations to promote CCHD funding; f. Responsible for CCHD second collection promotion, allocation to National office; g. Monitor dio-pool CCHD account; h. Speak on behalf of CCHD to interested parties. 4. Catholic Relief Services:

3 a. Oversees 2 collections per year for CRS; b. Contact for major contributors; c. Liaison to National CRS office; d. Oversees diocesan CRS projects; e. Speak on behalf of CRS to interested parties; f. Responsible for Rice Bowl collection and its allocation to the National office and local food parties; g. Disaster relief funds; h. Monitor dio-pool CRS account. 5. Asian Apostolate Work 6. Additional Roles and Responsibilities: a. Member of Toomey Residential Board, meets 4-6 times per year; b. Member of Loretto Board, meets once per year. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: Minimum: *Bachelors Degree in a related field. Masters preferred. *5-10 years experience in human services or related area. *5-10 years experience in management/administration. *Demonstrated success in a senior leadership role in a human service/non-profit agency. *Must be a practicing Catholic. *Must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the Diocese of Syracuse Offices. *Must be a highly organized, efficient, experienced leader/manager. Preferred: *MBA or equivalent in field of human services. *Demonstrated leadership experience. *Managerial/administrative experience in: -general management; -development and management of budgets; -understanding of grants and funding sources; -marketing; -human resources management; -board and volunteer relations and management -team building; -written and verbal communications; -strategic planning and planning management; -making collaborative and independent decisions. Physical Requirement Necessary on a Regular Basis: *Speech and hearing sufficient for constant in-person and telephone communication; *vision sufficient to qualify for a New York State driver s license; *Mobility sufficient to drive, travel and participate in local, state and national meetings; *Manual dexterity sufficient to use a computer and related technology.
