2 Overview Dear SWE Members, Partners and Friends, I am pleased to present the FY10 accomplishments for our Society! We made significant progress this year towards realizing many elements in our mission. This summary provides a review of FY10 theme and strategic goals/objectives defined in SWE Strategic Long Range Plan, Results organized by goals/objectives, and Results from new and ongoing initiatives 2

3 Theme Success on Your Own Terms This is the year for recognizing SWE s growth and progress as well as commemorating many different successes that women engineers have achieved during the past 60 years The yearlong 60th Anniversary Celebration began at WE09, last year s Annual Conference, and will conclude during WE10, Nov. 4-6,

4 FY10 Strategic Goals and Objectives GOAL #1 Growing the Profession Outreach There is an increase in women choosing to enter the engineering and technology profession Objective Improve retention in math and science education GOAL #2 Professional Excellence Women in engineering and technology excel professionally, and their achievements are showcased and valued Objective Increase the quality of professional development programs for all career stages and sectors GOAL #3 Industry Catalyst SWE is a catalyst for changing the professional climate to enable women in engineering and technology to excel Objective Increase the number of discussions with industry, government, and academic influencers GOAL #4 Inclusive Global Community Women in Engineering and Technology and SWE stakeholders find value in SWE as a diverse, inclusive, global community Objective Improve the SWE membership and leadership profile to reflect the demographics of women in engineering and technology GOAL X - Emerging Opportunity 4 Objective Understand how SWE can better serve Women in Academia (WIA) membership segment

5 Results: Goal #1 Growing the Profession Outreach Improve retention in math and science education Signed a Letter of Agreement with FIRST Improved Aspire website with expanded information Conducted 4 Wow! That s Engineering! events Conducted 5 Webinars on Effective Outreach Programming and Proper Messaging Awarded $473K in scholarships at the Society level Awarded NSF grant (with NSBE, SHPE, AISES) to develop Enhanced Engineering Society Outreach workshop to make engineering outreach more inclusive underrepresented 699 members self-identified as engaged in outreach efforts 709 members were trained in Outreach 7995 girls & adult influencers reached at SWE coordinated events 35 events held in partnership with other and/or technical organizations Had 12 unique presentations/publications on Title IX and STEM 5

6 Results: Goal #2 Professional Excellence Increase the quality of professional development programs for all career stages and sectors Provided professional development (PD) sessions at the SWE annual and region conferences for members in all career stages Held 21 webinars with various topics Chartered a PD Advisory Board to replace the PD Committee Chartered a PD Curriculum Committee Established a Leadership Competency Model to serve as the baseline for the leadership curriculum Chartered a Leadership Coaching Task Force to transform the Leadership Coaching program 6

7 Results: Goal #3 Industry Catalyst Increase the number of discussions with industry, government, and academic influencers Had 12 unique presentations/publications on Title IX and STEM SWE President attended President Obama s announcement of Educate to Innovate! Held a roundtable discussion on practical approaches to attaining and retaining women in STEM in January 2010 Led Capital Hill day on Diversity fuels innovation and had 8 SWE participants in the Congressional Visit Day in March 2010 Had >150 attendees at GRPP presentations at all regional conferences Obtained SWE Senate approval for white paper on equal opportunity Sponsored an eng. societies briefing on engineering in K-12 classroom Supported NCWGE briefing on STEM Education: how gender bias hurts girls, boys and US competitiveness Sponsored ACS briefing STEM professional in the classroom: volunteering to improve K-12 education Co-sponsored Engineering Public Policy Symposium on April 20 (ASME lead) Cp-sponsored Computer Science Education: Bringing IT Jobs to Your District on April 22 (NCWIT lead) 7

8 Results: Goal #4 Inclusive Global Community Improve the SWE membership and leadership profile to reflect the demographics of women in engineering and technology Signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with JWIN (Japan Women s Innovation Network) at WE09 Held the 4th PD Conference in Germany in March 2010 Several Cummins employees in India joined SWE SWE ED attended the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) conference and its Women in Engineering sub-committee meeting in Kuwait in October 2009 Piloted the leadership pipeline process in 9 regions Increased the number of leaders and mentors identified at the region level 8

9 Results: Goal X - Emerging Opportunity Understand how SWE can better serve the Women in Academia (WIA) membership segment A WIA meeting was held by the Special Director at WE09 to discuss the needs A survey is being conducted to seek further inputs from broader stakeholders, including faculty, counselors and graduate students 9

10 Senate s Accomplishments Held 1 st Senate Training in July 2009 Held 1 st virtual meeting in July 2009 Had fully staffed leadership team: Communications chair, Mega issues chair and chair elect, Governance chair Conducted 2 face to face meetings October conference bylaws updates and mega issue kickoff January meeting business meeting and mega issue presentations Deliberated and voted on 26 motions 3 motions handled virtually and 2 motions voted electronically Participated in Strategic Plan Review Considered 5 mega issues; expect motions on 3 4 Commissioned 4 task forces; completed objectives on 3 Contingency Reserve Fund(CRF), Training, Governance, Role of the Alternate Senator Monthly newsletters Communication plan adopted and updated for FY11 Established a baseline of expectations for senators and stakeholders 10

11 Highlights of WE09 4,587 attendees! Despite the economic downturn, it had the 3 rd largest attendance of any SWE conference 150+ sessions and tours 230 companies at the career fair Launched the SWE 60th anniversary celebration Selected winners of the Defining Success contest Announced winners of SWE Section History Award Offered SWE Grassroots Oral History Project Workshop & Toolkits Hosted SWE 60 th Anniversary Gallery Launched I Remember SWE60 Scrapbook 11

12 On Going and New Initiatives SWE President presented the followings on March 24, 2010 The 2010 SWE President Award to Brenda Manuel, Assistant Administrator for Diversity and Equal Opportunity at NASA A SWE Certificate of Appreciation to Representative Vernon Ehlers (R-MI) for his longtime champion of the need to improve STEM education in America s schools Chartering 3 professional sections South Central Michigan Section (H014) Cedar Valley Section (H015) Greater Binghamton Section (E013) Planned Giving Task Force Defined the recognition levels for individual and planned giving Developing a Planned Giving Program Developed a draft Strategic Financial Plan and integrating the Strategic Financial Planning into the Strategic Planning process Completed the Code of Conduct policy and defined the roles and responsibility of the Ethic Committee 12

13 On Going and New Initiatives 60 Corporate Partnership Council (CPC) Members (FY10 Goal: 48 members) 74 Corporate Members (FY10 Goal: 80 members) Membership down ~10%; SWE and ME membership renewal campaign launched in April to help drive increased membership retention rates All SWE Literature Reviews compiled into an electronic searchable form and released June 2010 Completed the first drafts of paper for the 60 th anniversary journal. Review and revision are in progress SWE received a Tower Award (Silver) for Social Media/New Media Campaigns from the Business Marketing Association (Chicago) SWE Magazine received six APEX Awards Released a static governance website at WE09 with forms & documents for SWE leaders to use Changing the Collegiate Board Representative (CBR) position to a permanent board position 13

14 Transition from Bostrom Completed the transition on June 17, 2010 Hired 3 new staff Lester McNair Programs Manager Mary Carravallah Director, Member Relations Kim Justice Receptionist IT managed by the Revere Group Completing a contract to move to a new member database Kutchins Robbins and Diamond Ltd (KRD) provides the accounting and financial services starting FY11 An Extraordinary Time for SWE & HQ! 14

15 Engineering Barbie The vote is in: Barbie s 126 th career is Computer Engineer Mattel worked with SWE and the National Academy of Engineering to ensure the doll s accurate portrayal of the profession Available at retailers nationwide in Winter 2010 Official press release: t=7 including quote from SWE President Nora Lin Significant visibility across major media outlets 15

16 A Final Note I am truly proud of the accomplishments of our Society in FY10.
