Corporate & Foundation Relations: Connections, Relationships, Support Mike Marion, Senior Director Rutgers University Foundation December 18, 2008
Who we are a development team focused exclusively on relationship building with existing external grant making partners and relationship cultivation with prospective external grant making institutions a development team residing in the Rutgers University Foundation with specific internal academic unit support responsibilities and collaborative relationship cultivation with each unit s director of development

What we do manage and coordinate philanthropic gifts and grants* and steward relationships with corporations, foundations, and other organizations. work closely with deans, faculty, and the directors of development to identify priority projects and match them with the philanthropic interests of corporate and foundation partners. *non-contractual, non-governmental
How we can help Research/opportunity identification Proposal development support and training Submission process management and follow up Grant maker visits and introductions Manage timely delivery of any post-grant funder requirements Faculty advocate with prospective grant makers
How you can help You have the content (the products we sell) Lead generation and support cultivation Be accessible and flexible Communicate your passion Do your share in relationship management Ambassador for Rutgers Nurture your optimism
Partnership Process SAS Faculty Initiatives & Ideas SAS Directors of Development Mike Marion-Paul Mouravieff (CFR) Corporate & Foundation Prospects SAS Faculty Impacts
Corporations and Foundations Similarities Multiple points of contact within a single organization Differences Driven by a fixed mission vs. driven by fluid market forces Increased accountability with emphasis on impact/results.making investments, not just gifts Different Perspectives - Companies exist to make money, foundations exist to give money away in their areas of focus Length of time needed to cultivate large gifts Know your donor! Need to establish personal credibility to get in the door Increased competition for fewer dollars Foundations have larger emphasis on process and deadline (both a positive and a negative) Foundations employ subject matter experts, therefore greater content depth and detail often required Corporations more tactical and short term; foundations will invest in long term results Foundations will cooperate more readily; don t view each other as competitors
Some Current Prospects/Relationships Grant Maker: Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Large contribution for Mellon Graduate Fellowship program in Humanities Grant Maker: Ford Foundation Opportunities within their Knowledge, Creativity & Freedom focus Grant Maker: Keck Cell cycle regulation in the adult neuron proposal under consideration Grant Maker: ExxonMobil VP visit in March to explore overlaps and opportunities with RU Grant Maker: Schering-Plough Graduate fellowship initiative in Chemistry & Chemical Biology in development Grant Maker: John Templeton Foundation Consciousness of Physics Center concept in development
Summarizing Your Initiative General Template for Summarizing Proposals for Grant Makers (Ideal if kept to 2 pages or less) Proposal Title: Project name especially good when it s not too long telegraphic but descriptive and maybe even slightly provocative (it s okay to excite the interest of the reader!) Faculty Leader(s): Who's in charge (include any "endorsers/pis of stature as appropriate, or topline credentials of faculty leader) Background: Set the context, the societal need, and answer "why Rutgers?" and "why now? (especially important given the multitude of choices investors have) and why this opportunity is right for the prospective grant maker. Strategic Objectives: Potential big picture impacts of the program and specifically what you're trying to accomplish. Project Description: The basic mechanics of the program; include any inter-disciplinary/cross-university elements if they exist. Measurement: Results, effectiveness: how will we be able to quantify to the "investor" that their dollars were well spent? Sustainability: Existing track record of program, current alternative funding sources, or if a new program, what s the viability of program to last beyond the current year (and the current grant maker you're soliciting)... Funding Needed: The specific ask total dollar figure. If there s initial interest from the grant maker, a subsequent budget breakout can be provided.
Communication PHILOPS News: Bi-Monthly electronic communication summary from CFR of upcoming RFPs, grant cycles, deadlines, contact information and key areas of focus of grant makers Example release within PHILOPS News MacArthur Foundation Announces Second Annual Digital Media and Learning Competition Deadline: October 15, Please contact Marissa Vatsky at if you have questions, are interested in applying, or for more information.
