All of this was a motive for the launch of the first contest for innovation in the King Fahad Medical City, which eventually turned into a fair of innovation to be the core of the founding values of innovation and creativity in the healthcare in the Kingdom. This was supported by the CEO Dr. Abdullah AlAmro and gained the blessing of the Minister of Health Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabiah. This fair resulted in a successful outcome and creative projects. KFMC Ambitious are big and led to a move forward and opened innovation grants to all the healthcare practitioners who are interested in providing better care. KFMC main goal is to spread the concept of initiative and creativity, and to cultivate this culture in all the sectors of health, in the hope that this will lead to the improvement and advancement of health services.

6 Guidelines for Saudi Healthcare Innovation Grants Competition Objective: The Goal of the Innovation grants is to support creative and ambitious projects that provide innovative solutions to healthcare challenges. The Innovation Competition challenges individuals and organizations to submit their innovative idea(s) based on application in healthcare and to demonstrate that their idea(s) can be successful in implementation and lead to improvement in the healthcare sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and beyond. Innovation: Innovation can include creative methods for planning and implementing programs; the application of new technologies or ideas for improving current healthcare. 5

7 Competition Domains Projects/ideas should be based on healthcare innovation. Suggested areas include: Healthcare education, training and patient care Smart H o s p i ta l and ehealth Medical instrumentation Biotechnology Total Grants value: 1,000,000 SAR This grant will be divided into the above 4 categories And for each category there will be three prizes: 1st winner: 100,000 SAR 2nd winner: 80,000 SAR 3rd winner: 70,000 SAR 20% of Grant amount is allocated to the winner scouts and 80% is allocated for the project implementation 6

10 General Conditions: The competition is open to Individuals (male or fe male) and teams or organizations from within the Kingdom. The completion is open to nationals and residents of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia over 18 years old. The submitted ideas should belong to the announced grants domains. All the required information must be completed Ideas should be submitted before the announced deadline. The idea/project or its implementation should not conflict with religious or social values or Saudi law. The idea/project will be excluded from the competition if: The description is not clear and the benefits are not justified It has already been developed or commercialized The ownership of the idea is in dispute The idea/project or its implementation conflicts with religious or social values The cost of development exceeds 2 Million SAR or it takes more than 2 years to develop 9

12 Idea Submission Form The following notes will help you complete Form (A) 1. Brief description of your idea: in a maximum of 300 words please tells us what your idea is. 2. Who will benefit from your idea, for example: patients (individuals or groups), healthcare workers, the society, etc. (how sustainable it is) 3. What are the needs your idea will fulfill? Your idea should address a problem or a need. Identify the problem or the need. 4. What is your implementation approach? If you win a grant how will you implement your idea? What do you need to do that? And what is the timescale for doing it? What is the estimated cost for developing your idea? 5. Why do you consider your idea novel? A simple Google search, for example, might reveal if your idea is novel. We encourage you to do a search and tell us what is novel about your idea? 11

Current treatments involve invasive procedures and carry high risk of complications. In recent years a new non-invasive HIFU (high intensity focused ultrasound) modality has been utilized to treat Uterine Fibroids. However, the treatment involves thermal ablation which is painful and lengthy procedure. The new innovative device utilizes ultrasound energy to kill tumor cells by heat. The treatment is pain free and takes less time. The procedure can be performed in an outpatient clinic and does not require high capital cost. 13

Raheeq ALHarbi, Project Manager/System Analyst1, KFMC In today s word, which everything is about core competency and KFMC work proactively in this matter to gets advantage of its resources The Patient in a way that patients will work hand by hand with clinicians to improve service provided and reduce barriers to care through the use of patient navigators. Managing Patient Traffic has implications beyond the advantag es it offers to patients. Patients can clearly benefit from the guidance of navigators and load management which will increase patient satisfaction, reduce waiting time, and improve patient experience. This solution will support individual patients as it relevant to their specific needs at each service stage of the care with the most important factor The Right Time this to increase the degree of coordination and continuum of care. 3rd Winner: Laparoscopic Simulator Mr. Jalal ALFroukh and Mr. Mohammed ALAmar, Clinical Skills Technician, KFMC Most of the laparoscopic simulators rely heavily on virtual reality simulators which are very expansive; that limit their availability to large portion of surgical trainees. Our idea is to make simple, non-expensive and validate a model for surgical; laparoscopic training; we will call it KFMC Lap.Sim model. The model consists of layers of plastic filled with fluid or gel in the inner one. Trainee is supposed to cut the outer layer using laparoscopic tools without tear the inner one, and cut without fluid leakage. The KFMC Lap.Sim model when perfected will be available for thousands of surgical residents for training. The model is simple and non-expensive. 14

16 R&D Award: Electronic Wound Assessment Tool Julinah Mohd Shariff, Head Home Care Nursing Section, KFMC A wound assessment device that will revolutionize the way we do wound assessments and management at home. It will have the technology to scan and record measurements of the wound and also take a photo of the wound. The scanning technology will be able to give an accurate 3 dimensional wound measurements and also able to recognize the type of tissues and the degree of tissue damage. This device will be able to calculate the percentage of those tissues whether they are viable and granulating or necrotic or slough. The 3 dimensional features will give an idea of how deep the wound goes and measure wound cavities. It will automatically record all parameters and perform an analysis and recommend a treatment plan as in the best evidence based practice and product in managing the wound. In this way it can be used by both the novice and the expert in wound management. 15
