1 IASP Pre-conference Seminar SCIENCE PARKS AND AREAS OF INNOVATION: FUNDAMENTALS 26th September 2017, Swissotel The Bosphorus Istanbul, Turkey IASP 2011 Copenhagen Pre-conference In order to support the professionals of our industry, the International Association of Science Parks and Areas of Innovation (IASP) is organising its customary training seminar on the fundamentals of Science and Technology Parks (STPs) and Areas of Innovation (AOIs). Who should attend? People new to the industry or who would like to learn more about managing STPs & other AOIs. People who have either set up a new STP recently or who are currently in the process of doing so. Why attend? It is an effective way to shorten your learning curve about our industry. You can learn the fundamental issues of STP/AOI management from your peers who have years of experience in the field. It is a unique opportunity to connect with international colleagues facing the same problems and challenges.

Fortunately, many of us have walked that hard road in the past and have learnt many things about how STPs and AOIs actually work. IASP gathers all of this accumulated knowledge and is glad to share it with all fellow colleagues around the world who may require it. The IASP learning by sharing Pre-conference seminar is a great way to do just that. In this 2017 seminar held in Istanbul we will look at the main concepts that are crucial in the inception, conceptualisation, planning and management of STPs and AOIs: strategic models, incubation, marketing and communication, services, governance, challenges and opportunities. STP and AOI managers and experts from the IASP network will share their experience with you and discuss what worked and what didn t. Their vast experience will allow you to shorten your learning curve and will give you new insights that will be of great use in your everyday work. This implies being asked to answer a simple question: why are you doing this? Why are you building or have you built an STP/AOI? IASP Director General Luis Sanz will present the fundamentals of science parks and discuss its building blocks and strategies using the IASP Strategigram s seven axes: 1.Location and environment 2. Position in the knowledge / technology stream 3. Target firms 4. Degree of specialization 5. Target markets 6. Networking 7. Governance / Management model. New emerging missions and roles of STPs as a major driving force of new AOIs will also be addressed. Business incubation, business creation Martin Goroško, Startup Incubator Manager - Technopol Tallinn Science Park (Estonia) Encouraging the creation and growth of new businesses is a key factor for regional (and national) economic development. Business incubation is one of the major pillars of most areas of innovation. Understanding the fundamentals of incubation, the synergies between parks and incubators, and the different ways in which this interaction can happen is essential to design cost-effective facilities and to determine how business incubation works better in science parks. The importance of SMEs in many economies highlights the relevance of the linkages between STPs/AOIs and incubators. Incubation in parks and incubation in universities are crucial for our industry and deserve our attention. 11:10 11:40 Coffee break SESSION 3 11:40 12:20 Mostafa Karimian The governance of STPs and other AOIs Mostafa Karimian Eghbal, Internal Advisor - Isfahan Science and Technology Town (Iran) An adequate governance scheme is absolutely crucial for the success of STPs and AOIs and this is even more so at the early stages of a project. The governance of a park must determine the right mix of people and institutions that will have decision making capacity in the park: its objectives, mission, strategic models, but also its actual design (site, infrastructure, etc.) and of course through the different stages of its development. Distinguishing between the owners and the mere stakeholders of the project deciding about the competences of each party, and also about the management structure of the park, the adequate profile of the General Manager or CEO, etc. All these aspects constitute the institutional architecture of the park which can also be different depending on the stage of the project that the park is in, and STP/AOI managers should take them into account from the very beginning of the project.

Managers must ensure not only that the services provided are quality services, but also that they are really needed and demanded by their resident companies. This has to be achieved whilst stimulating and supporting the creation of new technology-based firms through incubation and spin off mechanisms. Having the right commercial strategy and making the right offer to the market is absolutely essential for the success of any science park. 15:00 15:40 Discussion groups SESSION 6 15:40 16:15 McLean Sibanda Science park manager nightmares McLean Sibanda, CEO - The Innovation Hub (South Africa) A seminar that aims to provide an introduction to the management of STPs and AOIs needs to address a number of essential topics that are indeed the main building blocks of our industry. But the problems and challenges that STP/AOI managers will encounter throughout their careers, and the type of skills that they need to have or must develop to face them, is much more diverse than our one day programme could ever cover, as these challenges are to be found all across the board of STP managers daily tasks. Therefore, we wanted to give an experienced manager a free hand to address the ten biggest problems in the life of an STP manager. This wild card session covering the lessons learned from a life-long career will certainly yield benefits for those who are newcomers to our industry. 16:15 17:00 Closing ceremony and certificates of attendance LEARNING BY SHARING SEMINAR This IASP Seminar has a very dynamic and practical approach and is designed to meet your needs, basing its content on your questions and comments. 5 REGISTRATION To register for the IASP Pre-conference Seminar, please complete the registration form for this event and send it to the IASP Communication and Events team by Registration is open until 6 th September 2017 and enrolments will be handled on a first come first served basis. After submitting your registration form, you will receive a confirmation from IASP staff as soon as your registration has been processed, including the corresponding pro-forma invoice. Your participation will be secured as soon as we receive the payment of your registration fee. Registration fees IASP Full Members: 200 IASP Affiliate and Associate Members: Non IASP Member: PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE FEES SHOULD BE RECEIVED BY IASP IN FULL. ANY TRANSFER CHARGES YOUR BANK MAY IMPOSE MUST BE PAID AT YOUR OWN EXPENSE. The registration fee includes tuition, seminar materials, certificate, coffee and lunch. Please note that the registration fee only covers attendance to the pre-conference seminar and does not cover any expenses related to the IASP World Conference. Cancellation policy: Cancellations received in writing before 6 th September 2017 will be refunded (minus an administration fee of 50 ). The balance will be refunded after the 34 th IASP World Conference. No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received after this date.
