Komen Career Catalyst Research Grants Conquering Metastatic Breast Cancer Letter of Intent Susan G. Komen is requesting Letters of Intent for the FY19 CCR Grant program that propose outstanding translational research into the understanding, detection, and treatment of metastatic breast cancer which will lead to a reduction in breast cancer deaths by Appropriate studies for this mechanism include, but are not limited to: Development of novel treatment strategies for existing metastatic disease. This could include applications that address drug resistance, research that investigates approaches to improve delivery of existing therapies to metastatic disease, as well as studies focused on the immune system and potential vaccine strategies. New approaches to detect recurrence and strategies to prevent or arrest metastasis. This could include studies that focus on the mechanisms of metastatic growth. RFP Report July 2-6, 2018 Page 6

7 Correlative studies of existing clinical trials for metastatic breast cancer, including analysis of biopsies and other patient samples. Such studies should leverage existing clinical trials to advance the understanding and treatment of metastatic breast cancer, including early recurrence. Investigating disparities leading to a higher burden of metastatic disease in certain populations, including biological or social causes, and/or interventions that eliminate disparities in metastatic breast cancer patients. Utilizing data science methods to better understand and treat metastatic breast cancer. Applications that fit the focus area as detailed above and include studies that address metastatic breast cancer disparities, or leverage data science to better understand and treat metastatic breast cancer are highly encouraged. For these purposes, metastatic breast cancer disparities research is defined as research investigating the biologic, behavioral, social and systems contributors to late-stage (metastatic) breast cancer in population groups affected by breast cancer disparities. This may include the identification, validation and testing of biological and/or socioeconomic factors that contribute to breast cancer disparities in metastatic breast cancer. This may also include identification of health services and public health interventions that address the causes of disparities in care and outcomes across population groups in metastatic breast cancer. Data science includes artificial intelligence and other analytical methods applied to data aggregated from multiple sources (Electronic Health Records, other clinical data, administrative databases, large data repositories, genomics and other -omics data, etc.). *Basic science studies focused on the mechanisms of breast cancer cell motility and broad exploratory (i.e. hypothesis generating ) studies are NOT appropriate for this Grant mechanism. Letters of Intent addressing topics other than the focus area, as described above, will be administratively withdrawn from consideration without an opportunity for appeal. Applicants/PIs may only submit ONE LOI per funding cycle. Applicants/PIs may request funding of up to $150,000 per year (combined direct and indirect costs) for up to three years ($450,000). Deadline: September 30, 2018 Caplan Foundation for Early Childhood Grants Program The Caplan Foundation for Early Childhood is an incubator of promising research and development projects that appear likely to improve the welfare of young children, from infancy through 7 years, in the United States. Welfare is broadly defined to include physical and mental health, safety, nutrition, education, play, familial support, acculturation, societal integration and childcare. Grants are only made if a successful project outcome will likely be of significant interest to other professionals, within the grantee s field of endeavor, and would have a direct benefit and potential national application. The Foundation s goal is to provide seed money to implement those imaginative proposals that exhibit the greatest chance of improving the lives of young children, on a national scale. Because of the Foundation s limited funding capability, it seeks to maximize a grant's potential impact. The Foundation provides funding in the following areas Early Childhood Welfare: Children can only reach their full potential when all aspects of their intellectual, emotional and physical development are optimally supported. Providing a safe and nurturing environment is essential as is imparting the skills of social living in a culturally diverse world. Therefore, the Foundation supports projects that seek to perfect child rearing practices and to identify models that can provide creative, caring environments in which all young children thrive. Early Childhood Education and Play: Research shows that children need to be stimulated as well as nurtured, early in life, if they are to succeed in school, work and life. That preparation relates to every aspect of a child s development, from birth to age seven, and everywhere a child learns at home, in childcare settings and in preschool. We seek to improve the quality of both early childhood teaching and learning, through the development of innovative curricula and research based pedagogical standards, as well as the design of imaginative play materials and learning environments. 20 Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics Request for Proposals: The Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics is a career development award to enable junior faculty members to carry out innovative bioethics research. It supports research that goes beyond current work in bioethics to help resolve pressing ethical issues in clinical care, biomedical research, and public policy, and creates a community that enhances future bioethics research by Scholars and Alumni/ae. Each year, the Foundation selects approximately three Greenwall Faculty Scholars to receive 50 percent salary support for three years to enable them to develop their research program. Scholars and Alumni/ae attend twice-yearly meetings, where they present their works in progress, receive feedback and mentoring from the Faculty Scholars Program Committee and other Scholars and Alumni/ae, and have the opportunity to develop collaborations with other researchers. The ongoing involvement of Alumni/ae with the Program provides them ongoing opportunities for professional development and feedback, and engages them in mentoring of younger Scholars.
